What are the best synth plug ins for lo fi hip hop and where can i find saws that dont sound so video gamey?

Is it possible to polish stock plugin sounds to an industry standard esque sound?

There are many great and free VST plug-ins downloadable online.  Most have a graphic interface for you to tweak the sounds to your liking.

May your quest be swift and satisfactory!

There isn't really a best synth for a certain genre, you should just look at a few, try them out and see what you can and can't do with them

A saw is a pretty rough sounding osc, just by themselves many oscillators sound very "video gamey". The idea is to take that base sound and add different effects to it to make it sound more refined.

Some sounds you just won't ever be able to get with some synths, that's why some are better than others for certain things, but you still have A LOT of creative freedom just with the stock plugins

I found this website not so long ago called soundgym.co that has free video lessons on pretty much every aspect of digital music production(effects, synths, mastering). You could check it out if you want, I learned quite a lot of new things there.

Yes!

I was going to say, to get the sounr u want usually involves multiple "stock" plug ins working together at the same time. Like a Saw with a Reverb as an example.

I remember looking at the free FL Studio tracks, man so complex! Some sounds had like 3 or 4 effects for one loop track! U can get real creative when u mix up multiple effects/plug ins.

Thanks for that advice I kind of got the idea on how to link a couple plug ins together I just wish I knew whst I was looking for as far as elementary aspects of adjusting sounds. Like i dont want to just memorize what im doing I want to know what I am doing.

The best way is just experimentation.  You may quite possibly end up creating things that surpass what you are pre-conceiving.

I have been going through a learning curve lately and a lot of this process is really clicking with me. I have learned a little more about effects and using two VSTs together to create more complex/ideal sounds.

I can now play some chords and melodies so I dont have to rely on modifying MIDI files. My stuff sounds very beginner but it is genuine progress from not knowing anything and self teaching with videos. I already had a background in percussion so beat making is natural for me.

That is definitely true. I have a couple pieces of music I have made myself that im impressed with and my girlfriend says some of them can be something. So I am about to put in mad hours trying to make something out of this.

Anyone here do any business or publishing with their music?

Quick question.

When mastering low and adjusting higher, how do you begin mastering low and not at default?

yeah its been fun listening to all my old favorite music with some true sound quality for once

Got two Adam Audio T7V's. Was tempted to get the A7X's but I figure hey lets make more music before we go blowing that kind of money, if i ever want to upgrade I can just sell the ones I have now anyways.

Everybody on the internet was telling me I wouldn't need a subwoofer but thats definitely next on my list. these things have good bass no doubt but it lacks punch. That and a decent mic; I had this dream recently where me and a co-worker were 'singing' such a strange beautiful song together and its been killing me that I can't try to re-create it because my mic is so terrible.

Everyday I seem to be getting a better understanding on how to play keys and an overall understanding of music theory in general.

This makes it easy to program simple chord progressions and melodies. I can work with the stock VSTs and be satisfied now that I have not put as much expectation into sounds.

I have found mixing sounds together can create unique higher quality sounds as was said in this thread, excellent and obvious advice I was hesitant to try.

My next goals are to develop sampling skills. I want to produce creative mixes with sounds and audio clips that can be mixed into an interesting track. I have Slicex, Newtime, and other stock plug ins to work with.

Sick! I also recommend Audacity for making samples, then importing into your DAW.

May I ask why you recommend it? I have heard of it before and but did not know it was free.

Its easy to use and lots of features on it. Its really useful for recording things on the fly, like from a movie or TV show or YouTube, whatever it might be.

Its very versatile. But Im sure theres paid versions out there that are even better. But for free, you cant beat it.

Found a few Facebook groups full of people with experience that ranges from 1st day to professional. It has provided me with straight forward answers and a reference to where I am at in my process of learning. Highly recommend jumping on that for beginners. It is nice to have a a network of like minded people to bounce ideas off of.

agreed, I've been getting a lot out of similar fb groups myself. There's some groups specifically for free VST/software I recommend joining

just today someone posted that izotope ozone elements 9 is free on sweetwater right now.

got my first real song in the works at the moment and I'm very pleased with it so far
