Cleanest Grains in 2020?
    #26524393 - 03/08/20 06:30 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I need some grain fast.  Last I was using was this:
https://www.amazon.com/Augason-Farms-White-Emergency-Storage/dp/B00FFJ4OXA/

But it's gotten a bit more expensive.  Producers pride 50lb whole oats is what I was using before, but those frequently had bacterial issues.  I didn't have this issue with the wheat.

Where are y'all sourcing grain?  Priority on cleanliness.

That’s out of hand. Pennington brand wild bird seed 50lb bag is 15$ at Walmart

I REALLY don't wanna use WBS if I can help it.  I mean... it's just not fun to fill jars with.  Don't wanna step on millet for the next year straight.  Appreciate the thought though, somebody will benefit from that knowledge somewhere.

Too mush prep? Too messy? I’ve never really had issues with it. If you need grain you could probably get some from a local feed store for cheap.

I'm dead set on Safflower seed. I will post some grows soon, but it is currently my favorite seed to date. And I was a hard core Oat Man. It dries like WBS without the starch and it has more oil during the boil, but when prepped correctly works great. But... 9.99 per 7lbs bag. So that sucks. Here is a picture!

I like barley from the feed store works pretty damn good since I can't get wheat anymore.

Ive used wbs and only wbs over the yeara but lately i wanted to try something new and tried buds oat tek.

Tbh.. im thinking of going back to the bird just because i find it easier and consistent.

Too soon to give up on the oats.. got about 30lbs of them in process... so ee shall see how things turn out.

I couldn't go by buds 30-45 boil time. Once i played around with the oats i "think" i found the optimal hydration process.

I use the countey feeds nutrina brand. Apparently triple cleaned but i find the insanely dirty and very starchy beyond the hull.

Millet always makes its way through whatever strainer I'm using and basically I'll be picking it up, finding it in weird places for... the entire foreseeable future.  If I have to I'll pick some up but I'm really trying to aim for shit intended for humans to eat, so I know it's been cleaned all to hell.

Thats why i use nylon mesh paint strainer bags. 5 gallon bag fits perfectly over a bucket. No mess when rinsing outside at the hose and beyond.

If youre a remove the floaters type just stretch the bag over the lip of the bucket and fill. Spoon your floaters and then tie off the bag. dump he water and refill the bucket to rinse the seed. grab the knot on the bag and plunge down pushing water through the bag. repeat til water is clear af, for me, usualy 2-3 plunges each over 2-3 clean water refills

Tie bag simmer whole thing. Pull out throw in bucket Take out to garage , open bag dump and s=pread onto screen panel to steam off.

I prefer Wheat Berries. Such as these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hard-Red-Spring-Wheat-Berries-CHEMICAL-FREE-Non-GMO-Vacuum-Sealed-Grain-23-lbs/253540976041?hash=item3b083845a9:g:n9cAAOSwSlpb7ZyI

Sorry if this is a dumb question and I don't mean to hijack OPs thread but I guess it's relevant - is there a difference in wheat (for our use) in terms of hard/winter/spring/red/white etc? I've always used rye and still have quite a bit to go through, but once I run out I plan on switching to something a little cheaper and was interested in wheat berries. Just today actually I was looking at my local grocery store and found "hard white spring wheat" for .55 cents/lb which is a fair bit less than I'm paying for rye and snagged a bit for a test run.

I don't think there's any issues for us between any of those varieties mentioned, no.  They all swell with water pretty effectively.

things to help with using bag

the bags i use (from lowes $4 2pk) have a good amount of elasticity but be mindful of the fact that the volume will be much larger once the grain is hydrated.

once youve emptied your bag dont try washing it or picking out all the leftover debris. you can rinse off but just hang it to dry and come back later and just shake it out , turn inside out, shake it out and all the dried particles will be gone.

I use a giant stock pot and keep rinsing till it’s clean just put one of those grease catcher screens over your sink drain so you don’t clog it by accident

I've gone through about 4 or 5 different brands of oats.. The purina ones are always the most prevalent. They are ok but I find random straws, corn, lentil things and weird little black balls in them all the time. I'll use Purina if I have to with good results, but these are Impeccably clean. No corn, no random stuff, no dirt, and they aren't bulked up at all in the dry state which to me says they were cured properly.

I've also used WBS and I don't like it. Inooculation points don't really matter I get the same rate of colonization WBS to oats.

Nice to see you FooMan
I also use the same bag of economy wbs. Haven't bought one recently but in the past when I used it, it was always very dirty and full of cracked corn and sunflower seeds. I don't mind though it's cheap. When this bag runs out I'll have to check it out again to see how much they have improved.

Haven't lived till you got a little wbs between your toes and I see your feet. Lmao.
I use a homemade strainer bucket. Don't have to worry about it falling through at all but I'm clumsy I always spill grains while filling jars.
I agree though was has always been good to me.

Search it up it has literally been discussed so many times that I'm getting sick of it.
There are literally TCs that flat out say fuck oats. There are others that love them. You either hate them or love them. That's as much as I'm willimg to even say about that as it's a never ending discussion that I'm getting sick of.

Dirty and poor quality oats suck.

Triple cleaned race horse oats I'll swear by.

Such an easy prep.

I mean I kinda covered it at one point in the thread.  Some batches of them are bacterial as fuck. 2 hours at 20 psi wouldn't cut it.  I've also had a batch or two come with rice weevils, though I'm not sure that's necessarily an "oat" issue.

9.99 for 7 lbs is expensive but it is a clean grain that is easy to use. Prepped these similar to Fooman, (also nice to see you)  the thing I like is that it hydrates nicely, but I don't rinse after the simmer. This seed will change colors when hydrated.

Kizzle did a run with it, but I think they might have been overhydrated for that go.

Also Producers Pride always seems to do ok for me. Mostly clean a little corn every once in a while. What's the price point on the Purina brand?

Here is drying fermented 7 day soaked oats.

And lastly the cheapest grain around. Deer Corn, I'm still experimenting with this one. It's a bitch to get hydrated.

I’m new but I read a lot, so many different opinions that I think an updated experiment is due.
Maby there has been one I didn’t see or can’t recall. I agree with the β€œLove it or hate it” regarding oats. I’ve see that said so many times.

I did 11 jars of MS Syringe to WBS and had no contams, it had too much corn in it for my liking as well. I may be off, but it seems like rye would be quite consistent, no? I’d like to try that as I really don’t like looking at the nasty corn.

Statistically that is just highly improbable.  Probably didn't have any serious contams.  But if you find yourself getting less than a dry ounce per quart jar of spawn, you probably have a bit of bacteria or something else going on in the mix.

And maybe that doesn't apply to you, but guaranteed, it applies to somebody.

They way I prepped that batch was hard rolling boil. I actually used my presto and put the lid on with the vent off. Got it super hot. The dumped deer corn in and left the heat on. 15 minuets until the water started to change colors and then drained and dryed.

Hydrated grains that are dry on the outside. No sticky messy clumps.

I prefer Wheat Berries. Such as these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hard-Red-Spring-Wheat-Berries-CHEMICAL-FREE-Non-GMO-Vacuum-Sealed-Grain-23-lbs/253540976041?hash=item3b083845a9:g:n9cAAOSwSlpb7ZyI

Got me googling.... Apparently there's an organic farm about 45 mins from me that sells 50 pound bags of HRS wheat berries for $22.  Sent them an email already, hopefully going to swing out there after work and grab some.

Oats are $52 for 50# but they're organic food grade for making flour so they're super clean.  Grabbing a 15 pound bag for $20 with my wheat.  These are avena nuda hulless oats, anyone worked with them before?

FWIW my last few runs have been 50/50 wheat/oats with some coffee grounds added.  Seems to have sped up colonization times across the board compared to straight oats or oats with coffee.

No bit anything food grade will work pretty damn good and hulless is good because it's the hull that causes problems with oats. For that price I'd just stick with the wheat though.

I love millet, it’s cheap. I just rinse, skim floaters, load in jars cover with just enough water to cover the seeds and pc 15psi 90mins and the grain absorbs all the water. I add like a teaspoon of gypsum to each jar but I ran out and started using a little wood ash instead which seems to work well.

Looks like it time to play with some wheat. Nice share. Ty.

Why not?  I can get good sized bags of it at the dollar store and it's fit for consumption so it's washed and ready to go.

Well maybe it's different now that I know what I'm doing but all my experiences with popcorn have been.. bacterial.  And it's just not as nutrient dense as I like for the purpose of what we're doing here. By all means though, any information gathered here isn't just for me.

If your getting bacteria in your grains after a proper PC cycle it's either your spawn lc wedge or bad PC cycle.

Haven't used wheat or barley yet.

The key to popcorn grain is after you boil it an hour at a rolling boil, lay it out flat on a towel to soak up the extra starches. Ive used popcorn grain extensively with oysters and cubes with no issue. Mycelia loves it and I’ve actually had some of the best flushes off of it in my experience cultivating.  It’s more expensive than other grains but it is a good grain if you prep it right. Most people screw it up by user error.

Wbs is my favorite grain by far for two factors. Speed of colonization in jars and colonization speed of bulk substrates. However, I don’t like wbs stuck between my toes. Oats have never done me wrong. I think the key to oats is properly straining them with a mesh or metal wire mesh strainer. People load them wet or even over cook them. I simply touch them with heat for 20 minutes at a rolling boil and there aren’t issues. Granted some oats are dirtier than others. But the price is right. I even use liquid inoculation with no issues so I’m adding more water to the mix. But I actually prep the oats on the dry side. There is an art form to prepping any kind of grain. Writing off any of them is just personal preference or failure to do it properly. It’s more about fine tuning and getting a feel for what you are working with.

Also if you have access to barley try that. It’s only a 12 minute prep.  look at lefty’s easier than fuck barley prep. Ive been meaning to try it when I run out of oats. The grain is a smaller size but very similar to oats. And I can assure you yield is good with barley.

This is what I like. A true cult warrior stating it like it is.

Btw Eat, I might be flogging a dead horse here but Safflower Seed is the shit! It's just as nimble as WBS without the cracked corn, which can be a starchy pain in the ass. But if hydrated properly the outside retains a seed like texture similar to Sunflower seeds, so it shakes well, but the inside of the seed is exposed through the top and allows fast colonization times. Some say it is because of the higher oil content compared to other grains. I think it was Insanemike who said that.  That being said, haven't gotten to the fruiting stage, but so far I love it. It is outperforming my Oats which were inoculated 3 days prior.

Shitty side is that it is expensive by comparison.  9.99 for 7 lbs

I’ll have to give that a try. Do you get it at Walmart?

Man highroller used corn Cobb with liquid inoculation for his spawn. You can’t get much starchier than that. Dude kills it growing.

Oh damn that is expensive. I can’t beat the price of race horse oats locally so far. 12$ for 50lbs.

Trust me, wheat is 5 times better than oats.  Get it from the feed store for $10.50/ 50 lbs.  Boil for 20-25 mins, easy to tell when its time to stop.  Oats are fine, but Id only use it if wheat or rye weren't available.  Never messed with WBS.

I guess my point and I am assuming so is Eats. You can grow on almost anything, so really price per lbs is the only factor when buying grains. They all work if prepped correctly.

They all work, but the prep for some is longer.  Oats takes twice as long to dry properly.  Another negative of oats is the cultures look weird growing, and its hard to tell if they are great or not.

In my experience the mycelium is whispier (not a word?) and doesn't look strong

Or its wet and bacterial looking

Or maybe both of these are fine? ….You don't really have this issue on wheat or rye.  Its very clear as to what is happening and if you have clean spawn.

Having done uninoculated control jars, and the problem going away when switching to a new grain source, I think the endospore count can really be a factor.  2 hours at 20 psi in an AA should do it for most stuff we work with.  I see how it is though, y'all got that "if I'm not having this problem, then you're having one cause you suck" mentality.  That's cool.

I'll admit to being picky but, sometimes the grain really makes a difference.  In my experience.

I apologise, what I mean is that I would look at your grain prep vs spreading the idea that one grain has a higher bacterial rate after running through a proper PC cycle. You know what your doing, you have been growing for years. I just hate to see the new Cultivators start picking up the inferred idea that oats are worse than xYZ grain because they have a higher tendency to have "endospore" after the proper Sterilization cycle, because they don't.

Oats tend to expand, they can become more difficult to shake. I don't like the smell. Those are all great reasons to look for another grain, but they don't produce bacteria after they run through the PC. Let's not propagate this idea because there are no facts to support this.

Oats are only as popular of a thing because they are the list of beginner teks.  Thats where I started too.  You have a ton of people here saying they don't like using them because of bacterial issues.  It might be prep or inexperience for some, but look to commercial spawn producers or big mushrooms farms.  You will see a lot of rye, millet, and wheat.  I've never seen oats anywhere else but on the shroomery.

Except that oats do inherently have higher bacterial endospore counts because
of the intact hull. The hull traps water, insulates the germ, and houses more
bacteria than grains without a hull. In the gen discussion thread I posted many
links to peer reviewed articles discussing microbiological impurity of hull intact grains like oats.

Why start with a grain that has all sorts of reasons that make it inferior when
you can start with a grain that doesn't

Fuck oats

Not necessarily true at all. We sterilize to ~99.99% since sterilization is technically
defined by a limit, meaning you never truly reach 100% sterile. If you have 10,000,000
spores and .01% live you still have 100,000 spores that could possibly germ.

The more spores your grain starts with, the more spores that survive sterilization.

Now that doesn't mean they are guaranteed to germ, and in fact may have been damaged
enough not to germ, but why take the chance when there are grains that are just
as cheap and work better without a finicky prep?

Availability is the most current issue I am noticing. Cant find wheat berries with the same cost benefit. Just bought a 15Lbs bag of Black Oil Sunflower seeds. I will see how they play out tomorrow. I'm thinking LI for these guys because of the grain size.

By all means use what you can get, I just think noobs should use grains that are
easier to prep, easier to spot contams, and just generally more user friendly.

Interested to see how the safflower  works out for you. Do you have any pics of it
working?

They all work.

Some people talk about endospores

I get milo locally for 12$ for 50lb and oats for 20$ for 50lb. I use milo for my master bags and transfer to oats. The milo I get locally is super clean, way cleaner then oats. One rinse (sometimes none). I would use milo exclusively but they only get it in every few months and generally only a pallet so when I can’t stock up on it I g2g it to oats. I can have a 5lb oat bag fully colonized in 5 days with milo, it takes 7-12 days with oats2oats. Clean, cheap, tons of inoculation points. PURE MILO FTW!

Somewhat, Milo is a little bigger and doesn't fall through strainers.  Tougher, too, it seems, millet ends up crushed a lot, I feel like.

Yes. I will get pictures in a moment. It is my favorite in terms of prep. Nice clean seed changes colors when hydrated, colonizes nicely. I do not know how it fruits yet. Haven't gotten that far. So by that standard I haven't fruited anything in 5 years, so yeah it's my favorite.

My local feed store also has pure millet but at 35$ a bag I would rather get 3 bags of milo. They are a equally great grain, Milo is just a bit bigger. Both colonize at the same rate and give a bunch of inoculation points. Millet is the best for g2g though imo. That shit gets everywhere with barely any shaking including toes haha.

Pretty much, LOL.  I can get a 50 pound bag of grain at tractor supply along with a gallon of 70% iso for under $40.

It's with the horse and cow health stuff in the back on a bottom shelf.  Usually with other gallons of things you didn't expect to see.  Or you can pre-order for pickup off their website and not care.

I got my hullless oats today and they're the cleanest grain I've ever seen.  They came in a clear plastic bag, probably because I only got 5 pounds, but it's impressive either way.
