I wouldn't be putting popcorn on any kind of list where we're trying to compile clean grains, personally.

Why not? I can get good sized bags of it at the dollar store and it's fit for consumption so it's washed and ready to go.
Any other type of corn I agree with you

Well maybe it's different now that I know what I'm doing but all my experiences with popcorn have been.. bacterial. And it's just not as nutrient dense as I like for the purpose of what we're doing here. By all means though, any information gathered here isn't just for me.

If your getting bacteria in your grains after a proper PC cycle it's either your spawn lc wedge or bad PC cycle.
There I said it. All you guys have been watching waiting for someone to.

I mean would you rather use popcorn from the dollar store rather than WBS, even if the popcorn was cheaper?

I will use any and every grain just for the experience of it.
Have used, WBS, Millet, oats, rye berries, popcorn, deer corn, rye grass seed, Safflower seed (favorite) BRown Rice.
Haven't used wheat or barley yet.

The key to popcorn grain is after you boil it an hour at a rolling boil, lay it out flat on a towel to soak up the extra starches. Ive used popcorn grain extensively with oysters and cubes with no issue. Mycelia loves it and I’ve actually had some of the best flushes off of it in my experience cultivating. It’s more expensive than other grains but it is a good grain if you prep it right. Most people screw it up by user error.
Wbs is my favorite grain by far for two factors. Speed of colonization in jars and colonization speed of bulk substrates. However, I don’t like wbs stuck between my toes. Oats have never done me wrong. I think the key to oats is properly straining them with a mesh or metal wire mesh strainer. People load them wet or even over cook them. I simply touch them with heat for 20 minutes at a rolling boil and there aren’t issues. Granted some oats are dirtier than others. But the price is right. I even use liquid inoculation with no issues so I’m adding more water to the mix. But I actually prep the oats on the dry side. There is an art form to prepping any kind of grain. Writing off any of them is just personal preference or failure to do it properly. It’s more about fine tuning and getting a feel for what you are working with.
Also if you have access to barley try that. It’s only a 12 minute prep. look at lefty’s easier than fuck barley prep. Ive been meaning to try it when I run out of oats. The grain is a smaller size but very similar to oats. And I can assure you yield is good with barley.

This is what I like. A true cult warrior stating it like it is.
Btw Eat, I might be flogging a dead horse here but Safflower Seed is the shit! It's just as nimble as WBS without the cracked corn, which can be a starchy pain in the ass. But if hydrated properly the outside retains a seed like texture similar to Sunflower seeds, so it shakes well, but the inside of the seed is exposed through the top and allows fast colonization times. Some say it is because of the higher oil content compared to other grains. I think it was Insanemike who said that. That being said, haven't gotten to the fruiting stage, but so far I love it. It is outperforming my Oats which were inoculated 3 days prior.
Shitty side is that it is expensive by comparison. 9.99 for 7 lbs

I’ll have to give that a try. Do you get it at Walmart?
Man highroller used corn Cobb with liquid inoculation for his spawn. You can’t get much starchier than that. Dude kills it growing.
Oh damn that is expensive. I can’t beat the price of race horse oats locally so far. 12$ for 50lbs.

I'm with you on oat. But if you had a special culture to try out on some good quality shit. TSC is where I found it.

Trust me, wheat is 5 times better than oats. Get it from the feed store for $10.50/ 50 lbs. Boil for 20-25 mins, easy to tell when its time to stop. Oats are fine, but Id only use it if wheat or rye weren't available. Never messed with WBS.

I guess my point and I am assuming so is Eats. You can grow on almost anything, so really price per lbs is the only factor when buying grains. They all work if prepped correctly.

They all work, but the prep for some is longer. Oats takes twice as long to dry properly. Another negative of oats is the cultures look weird growing, and its hard to tell if they are great or not.

In my experience the mycelium is whispier (not a word?) and doesn't look strong

Or its wet and bacterial looking

Or maybe both of these are fine? ….You don't really have this issue on wheat or rye. Its very clear as to what is happening and if you have clean spawn.

Having done uninoculated control jars, and the problem going away when switching to a new grain source, I think the endospore count can really be a factor. 2 hours at 20 psi in an AA should do it for most stuff we work with. I see how it is though, y'all got that "if I'm not having this problem, then you're having one cause you suck" mentality. That's cool.
I'll admit to being picky but, sometimes the grain really makes a difference. In my experience.
