I mean I kinda covered it at one point in the thread. Some batches of them are bacterial as fuck. 2 hours at 20 psi wouldn't cut it. I've also had a batch or two come with rice weevils, though I'm not sure that's necessarily an "oat" issue.

Nope just a grain issue.

9.99 for 7 lbs is expensive but it is a clean grain that is easy to use. Prepped these similar to Fooman, (also nice to see you) the thing I like is that it hydrates nicely, but I don't rinse after the simmer. This seed will change colors when hydrated.
Kizzle did a run with it, but I think they might have been overhydrated for that go.
Also Producers Pride always seems to do ok for me. Mostly clean a little corn every once in a while. What's the price point on the Purina brand?
Here is drying fermented 7 day soaked oats.

And lastly the cheapest grain around. Deer Corn, I'm still experimenting with this one. It's a bitch to get hydrated.

I’m new but I read a lot, so many different opinions that I think an updated experiment is due. Maby there has been one I didn’t see or can’t recall. I agree with the “Love it or hate it” regarding oats. I’ve see that said so many times.
I did 11 jars of MS Syringe to WBS and had no contams, it had too much corn in it for my liking as well. I may be off, but it seems like rye would be quite consistent, no? I’d like to try that as I really don’t like looking at the nasty corn.

Statistically that is just highly improbable. Probably didn't have any serious contams. But if you find yourself getting less than a dry ounce per quart jar of spawn, you probably have a bit of bacteria or something else going on in the mix.
And maybe that doesn't apply to you, but guaranteed, it applies to somebody.

They way I prepped that batch was hard rolling boil. I actually used my presto and put the lid on with the vent off. Got it super hot. The dumped deer corn in and left the heat on. 15 minuets until the water started to change colors and then drained and dryed.
Hydrated grains that are dry on the outside. No sticky messy clumps.

Oh my bad it was late and I didn’t explain myself well. I meant to say I didn’t think that was normal, and yes I had one jar that looked bacterial. I didn’t mean to spread misinformation. I didnt mean to do that.

I prefer Wheat Berries. Such as these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hard-Red-Spring-Wheat-Berries-CHEMICAL-FREE-Non-GMO-Vacuum-Sealed-Grain-23-lbs/253540976041?hash=item3b083845a9:g:n9cAAOSwSlpb7ZyI
Got me googling.... Apparently there's an organic farm about 45 mins from me that sells 50 pound bags of HRS wheat berries for $22. Sent them an email already, hopefully going to swing out there after work and grab some.
Oats are $52 for 50# but they're organic food grade for making flour so they're super clean. Grabbing a 15 pound bag for $20 with my wheat. These are avena nuda hulless oats, anyone worked with them before?
FWIW my last few runs have been 50/50 wheat/oats with some coffee grounds added. Seems to have sped up colonization times across the board compared to straight oats or oats with coffee.

No bit anything food grade will work pretty damn good and hulless is good because it's the hull that causes problems with oats. For that price I'd just stick with the wheat though.

I love millet, it’s cheap. I just rinse, skim floaters, load in jars cover with just enough water to cover the seeds and pc 15psi 90mins and the grain absorbs all the water. I add like a teaspoon of gypsum to each jar but I ran out and started using a little wood ash instead which seems to work well.

Whatever you got TBH. I'm working with a bag I bought maybe 5 years ago off Amazon to grow as cat grass. Stopped germinating but it grows fungi like a champ.
