Cleanest Grains in 2020?
    #26524393 - 03/08/20 06:30 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I need some grain fast.  Last I was using was this:
https://www.amazon.com/Augason-Farms-White-Emergency-Storage/dp/B00FFJ4OXA/

But it's gotten a bit more expensive.  Producers pride 50lb whole oats is what I was using before, but those frequently had bacterial issues.  I didn't have this issue with the wheat.

Where are y'all sourcing grain?  Priority on cleanliness.

That’s out of hand. Pennington brand wild bird seed 50lb bag is 15$ at Walmart

I REALLY don't wanna use WBS if I can help it.  I mean... it's just not fun to fill jars with.  Don't wanna step on millet for the next year straight.  Appreciate the thought though, somebody will benefit from that knowledge somewhere.

Too mush prep? Too messy? I’ve never really had issues with it. If you need grain you could probably get some from a local feed store for cheap.

I'm dead set on Safflower seed. I will post some grows soon, but it is currently my favorite seed to date. And I was a hard core Oat Man. It dries like WBS without the starch and it has more oil during the boil, but when prepped correctly works great. But... 9.99 per 7lbs bag. So that sucks. Here is a picture!

See this right here makes me not wanna trust you. Lol just playing broham.

I like barley from the feed store works pretty damn good since I can't get wheat anymore.

Ive used wbs and only wbs over the yeara but lately i wanted to try something new and tried buds oat tek.

Tbh.. im thinking of going back to the bird just because i find it easier and consistent.

Too soon to give up on the oats.. got about 30lbs of them in process... so ee shall see how things turn out.

I couldn't go by buds 30-45 boil time. Once i played around with the oats i "think" i found the optimal hydration process.

I use the countey feeds nutrina brand. Apparently triple cleaned but i find the insanely dirty and very starchy beyond the hull.

Millet always makes its way through whatever strainer I'm using and basically I'll be picking it up, finding it in weird places for... the entire foreseeable future.  If I have to I'll pick some up but I'm really trying to aim for shit intended for humans to eat, so I know it's been cleaned all to hell.

Thats why i use nylon mesh paint strainer bags. 5 gallon bag fits perfectly over a bucket. No mess when rinsing outside at the hose and beyond.

If youre a remove the floaters type just stretch the bag over the lip of the bucket and fill. Spoon your floaters and then tie off the bag. dump he water and refill the bucket to rinse the seed. grab the knot on the bag and plunge down pushing water through the bag. repeat til water is clear af, for me, usualy 2-3 plunges each over 2-3 clean water refills

Tie bag simmer whole thing. Pull out throw in bucket Take out to garage , open bag dump and s=pread onto screen panel to steam off.

Now this is a fucking idea.  Looking into this immediately.
:lookslucrative:

Really though I'm gonna make a mess anyway so I may as well suck it up for now.

Have you tried local natural stores?

I prefer Wheat Berries. Such as these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hard-Red-Spring-Wheat-Berries-CHEMICAL-FREE-Non-GMO-Vacuum-Sealed-Grain-23-lbs/253540976041?hash=item3b083845a9:g:n9cAAOSwSlpb7ZyI

Sorry if this is a dumb question and I don't mean to hijack OPs thread but I guess it's relevant - is there a difference in wheat (for our use) in terms of hard/winter/spring/red/white etc? I've always used rye and still have quite a bit to go through, but once I run out I plan on switching to something a little cheaper and was interested in wheat berries. Just today actually I was looking at my local grocery store and found "hard white spring wheat" for .55 cents/lb which is a fair bit less than I'm paying for rye and snagged a bit for a test run.

I don't think there's any issues for us between any of those varieties mentioned, no.  They all swell with water pretty effectively.
