Habitat:
1. Growing straight out of cottonwood log.


2. Growing out of debris at bottom of a split cottonwood tree etc.

Not able to take a spore print.

Stem:
Fibrous, solid, not able to snap in half

Cap:
Viscous, brown, 4 inches across


Bruising:
None/maybe too slow to notice

No viel/volva

Edit: found March 8th in Roseville, California

First one looks like Auricularia sp.

Peziza and Pluteus cervinus sensu stricto.  Pluteus exilis is more common in California, but it has dark squamules on the stem.  The real Pluteus cervinus comes out in March and April.
