Perennial woodlover beds in zone 5 and below
    #26524111 - 03/08/20 03:15 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I have always wanted to see some perennial (comes back every year) woodlover beds in my neck of the woods. Conventional wisdom says azurescens and cyanescens will both survive in zone 5 with a heavy blanket of fresh chips and straw in the fall... but I haven’t seen it work. I have high hopes for aztecorum (since they grow wild here). Anyone seeing success with perennially fruiting woodlover patches in zone 5 or below? Are ovoids hardy enough to try in zone 5?

Zone 5? Is that canadian or u.s.? I think canadian zone 5 is American zone 4. But either way yes azures, cyans, subaeruginosa, and ovoids will all survive zone 5 quite well without protection. The main problem with azures, cyans and subs in my neck of the woods is that we usually get snow or hard frosts before they can mature. Ovoids seem go be the most hardy of the bunch ime. They fruit well after the last risk of frost here.

I have four jars of Cyan spawn around 75% right now. This is my first try, but they thrive here in Oregon. I plan on spawning outside in a strawberry planter.
I would do a bed, but I'll be moving soon, so I'll just take the chips with me to my new place.

Zone 5 means the coldest temps of winter are between -29c and -23c. I'm not sure what the Canadian zone system is like. That's good to hear about ovoids! Thanks for the info.

OR west of the cascades seems like the place to be for woodlovers!
