Monotub in Bathroom?
    #26523939 - 03/08/20 01:20 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all, so I live in very new lofts (3 years old) and they are pretty spotless from what I can tell. I have a bathroom that I never ever used since I moved in, tile w/ grout (spotless). Would it be a bad idea to place my monotubs in here? My reasoning would be that I use my second room for my office and don't necessarily want to have the tubs on/near carpet and/or move my computer setup etc into the living area (don't want to be around the tubs 24/7 and my cat will be curious eventually). I keep my house at 75 degrees since it's winter and the whole loft is polished concrete aside from the two carpeted bedrooms. One concern I have is that the bathroom doesn't get heat from the heater, so it's roughly 68-70 degrees in there, so a bit cooler. It only has an exhaust vent that goes to the outside open air, albeit a small one.

Am I overthinking this? Can I just co-habitat in my office with my tubs without increasing the risk for contam?

When starting it's better for it to be a little colder to make things grow slower, it affects contams more than myceleum. I would say temperature wise the bathroom is better for you right now. However, 75 is still a great temperature, you don't want it to be over 83 in your tubs though. That's when contams can really get growing fast.

You're pretty safe once you spawn. The myceleum has established itself, and will be better equipped to combat any new contams. You don't need to worry much about cotams coming in, just the ones that might already be there.

You can put your mono anywhere you want. Outside inside, closet, bedroom, septic tank. As long as your spawn is clean and your temps are good 65-80 your fine.

Is your bathroom clean enough that you would lick the tile? Just curious what people consider clean.

I wouldn't do this to a freshly cleaned anything, ever, so I really dunno how I could use this question to determine haha.

I'm just saying, if you wouldn't lick it. It's not clean IMO.

Would you lick an agar plate?

I would lick it if I didn't clean the tile with chemicals ha. The RH in the bathroom is also higher since I run a humidifier in the bedroom it is a part of. I've also read that temperature drops can help trigger pinning.

I was thinking of letting the tubs colonize in the same area the jars did (75 degrees), and then fruiting in the bathroom (68-70 degrees). My jars will be fully colonized in 2 days, possibly sooner but would rather spawn them to bulk on the same day.

I also have one "suspect" jar. No visible contams, but when it came out of the pressure cooker it decide it wanted to release some built up pressure. I've never had a jar release pressure before so I marked it with an X and inoculated it separately and let it colonize in another area. I will probably just spawn it into a 1:1 ratio in a tiny tote and see what happens. (separate from the other tubs)

And I'm saying I could've cleaned it 5 seconds ago best I know how, and I wouldn't lick it cause it's a bathroom floor and that's not where tongues go.

Disinfect your bathroom and get to growin. It sounds like a perfect space without carpet and easy to thoroughly clean.
