Noob first grow. Early broken veils. Too much water?
    #26523508 - 03/08/20 07:58 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello again dear shroomers. It seems like every day I have some kind of a new problem and questions arising ever since I put my cakes inside sgfc.
Long story short, these cakes have been in the fruiting chamber for 4-5 days now, they had pins on day 2, some of them appeared while still in jars after the consolidation week.

They have been growing nicely, roughly doubling in volume every 24hours, but now I woke up to find some of them with broken veils. However, they are so tiny, I don't see a point in picking them yet. I've been reading older threads I could find, and I think the problem was too much water. I use bottom watering (changing that water every 12h) and I misted pretty heavily (about 350ml water three times a day + additional water for bottom watering, there are 11 cakes in the chamber). When I woke up today I found the chamber looking pretty damp with lots of water condensation on walls, and cakes were still pretty damp.

So for now I removed the water from the plates and I think I'll give them a little time to dry up before misting again, and I'll probably stick to misting 2 times a day instead of 3 times.

Should I remove these pins, or should I leave them to grow a little more before picking? They are about half finger length at the moment and I don't believe they are even close to releasing any spores, even though they have veils broken. If I dried them up there wouldn't be anything left out of it. Also, I should probably stick to cutting it, not pull and twist, to minimize risk of damaging other nearby pins?

Thanks for any inputs.

Here's the photo:
1, 2, 3 are pins with broken veils, though there are a few more that are not in this photo. 4 is a strange blob which I'm assuming is a mutant?

First of all congrats on your first grow, I would let those get bigger before you chop them, they look like they could use more FAE

Thank you. I try to fan about 5 times a day, I think it might be a problem with where I placed my chamber, it's pretty much placed in between walls and below the desk. So the air is pretty stale and there are no drafts, so I might need to do a little more fanning than usual.

Just an update in case anyone wonders into this thread in the future having the same problem. I let them grow for another 24hours since that photo was taken.

They grew really nicely, none of them dropped the spores, but some of the gills started to get a little darker when compared to those photos, so I decided to harvest them. Chopped off about 70% on three of the cakes and got 82g wet, I was expecting less to be honest, but even these little guys can put some weight when put together. Some mushrooms still haven't broken veils yet, so I put them back into the chamber. Expecting 30-45g wet per cake on the first flush, so I'm happy with the results.

Hopefully they act normal and don't break the veils on the 3rd day of the second flush.
