I wonder what the biological advantage of this is or if it's just a freak mutation

Maybe it attracts nocturnal animals for spore dispersal. Really cool pictures.

Very interesting...
Unlike omphalotus illudens, the cap and stipe seem to glow more strongly than the gills.
Thanks for posting this, Alan!

I found some good ones in Gainesville a few months ago, I bet they are in your area too.

Probably to attract insects which spread spores and mycelium.

I don't worry about stuff like that, they rarely attack humans. Humans are way more dangerous than any animal, and never had a problem with them either.

Long exposure, 30 to 120 seconds, f3.2 to f8, ISO 2200 to 18000.

Great pics Alan. Yes, long exposure. I knew time lapse was the wrong term. Up to 120 seconds, wow!

Sometimes I use even more than 120 seconds - this one had the shutter open for 40 minutes:

Nice, I'll try my luck with bioluminescent fungi here in NZ this season, there are a lot more here than I first thought.

I'm sure! One way to do it is to collect every Mycena and then take a long exposure photo of your tackle box after night falls to see which ones glow.

Here's a funny photo of Bethany and myself, taken a few minutes before we found all the mushrooms in this thread.
