Small clump of Lion's Mane
    #26522796 - 03/07/20 07:59 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

First time finding Lion's Mane... I'm eager to try it!  Not sure how I'd error here, but checking in with y'all.

Found in Santa Cruz Mnts, CA, today, growing on dead, fallen Doug Fir.

Smell is fragrant.  Taste is slightly sweet.  Spines are pointed, NOT branched.

When they’re yellow like that they tend to be pretty sour and not tasty

Are the common west coast lion's mane species different than the east coast varieties? It looks different to me, but maybe it's just more weathered than what I'm used to seeing. Angler's spot on with zz top.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about it at first because it looked a bit different than in pictures, but I realized that's just because my clump was small and a little yellowed (as doctorghosty mentioned) compared to the big, beautiful ones in most shots taken from farther back.

I fried it up this morning in a little oil, with a dash of spices... quite nice!
