@filthyknees missed them last night around 1am was dried up again by 8am so I misted agian. Should I keep misting every-time it dries up? 1 more question. I have decent sized pins already u think misting it will cause aborts?

I mist as many times as it takes to keep surface conditions proper. Small beads of water on top of substrate.
And no it shouldn’t cause them to abort.

Keep trying or give up? This was 6th xfer and I don’t need an isolate but this one seems determined to eventually outrun it.

You can keep trying but all the cultures I’ve had that look like that don’t do well. That’s the type of culture that makes me think meshed in bacteria

"meshed I'm bacteria" generally is meant to mean that is invisible but having an affect on the mycelial morphology. The extreme rhizo growth is often attributed to this. I'm not entirely convinced though and would keep trying. Unless you've got a bunch of other plates and don't need that culture.

Hey everyone, I’ve looked back through the thread a bit to try and answer my question but thought I’d just post my specific situation for advice. This is my third time growing, second time successfully. I’ve learned a lot with each try and have been trying to piece together different techniques along the way. The main issue I’m having right now is dialing in my sub moisture.
I’ve been following bluecat’s sub method using 6qt verm to a brick of coco. He recommended 2L of water but I found that to be a bit dry so went with 3 this time. My sub still seems somewhat dry after about a week in 73-78f. I misted one of my tubs pretty heavily but still haven’t seen much growth on it. I guess my main question is how dry is too dry and how wet is too wet? I’m worried about overmisting as well as having the sub dry out too much. Last round my sub became hydrophobic and floated on top of any water I tried to add so don’t want to get to that point.
I see a lot of people with sub that looks very moisture rich, almost black in color. Other people I see having good results with a lighter brown. I have water beading up on the sides of the tub so it seems pretty humid in there but I still feel like I’m doing something wrong. Thanks in advance for dealing with my long post for what is probably a pretty easy question to answer!

I’ve done more water, less water, and the best seems to be the OG. 650g coir, 2 qts verm, 4 qts water

Thanks for the reply! Looks like I’m using way too much verm then. I was kind of thinking it looked like too much when making the sub but I’m still fairly new at this so wasn’t entirely sure. That’s also more water than I was using so seems like it would work better than what I’ve been doing. What should I be looking for in terms of moisture content now that it’s in tubs? What are some signs of the sub being too dry? Also I saw you mentioned misting is okay with pins. Is it also okay during colonization? I’m worried I’ve damaged mycelium by misting in the past. Thanks

I suppose it’s also worth mentioning that I use the vigoro verm from Home Depot which is different from most other verm I’ve seen but also what I think most people use?

Misting is ok during colonization too if needed. If it’s too dry you won’t get a good pinset

Follow any of the fine teks on the site and you'll bypass a lot of second guessing and trouble shooting. Go to the getting started forum and read through the stickies. Between 3.5 and 4 quarts water to one brick of coir and two quarts verm. No misting needed until after the first flush if you get your shit dialed in. I use multi pore tape. Two layers on the bottom holes and one on the top holes.

Anyone have recent experience using canola as spawn?? I've read conflicting reports about the oil content and how well it plays with the myc.

Popcorn is pricey for anything beyond the hobbyist imo, store bought at least.

I've noticed no benefit to gypsum except for helping over hydrated spawn not clump.
