SFD lids

Do SFDs fit perfectly in the wide mouth plastic lids? I'm getting the 90mm wide mouth discs, but do they work by just sticking under plastic lids? Or I have to get some adhesive and and to stick it under the lid?

I know you can do that, but the another option is under the plastic lid. It is my understanding that they fit underneath the plastic lids the best and stick by themselves right? I'm not doing any RTV to the top.

You can drill a 1/4 hole in your lid and rtv it in place then you can make like 10 lids with 1 SFD

I understand, but I will not be doing it that way. I'm going to use it as a whole with the platic lids. My understanding of it is that they just fit right under the plastic lids correct? I'm not doing any RTV.

yes the lids are also 90 mm, keep in mind it's humid inside your jars

SFDs cause humidity or something? What do you mean?

The heat generated by the mycelium causes it to be humid inside the jars, and this humidity could open potential vectors for contaminates straight through the filter.
I have seen many growers have success using plastic lids and no filter at all, they just crack the lid a turn or two and let it chill as is

So are you going to drill a hole or just put SFd inside a lid and screw it shut?

Why no silicone??
I was gonna just switch out my lid sized tyvek circles for the whole disks too, but when I got them it seemed pretty wasteful and they’re so thick. Plus it’s super helpful having one piece lids for SAB stuff.

That's one I'm trying to do, achieve as one piece easier lid and shake. I ordered SFD's, should be coming. I saw SpitballJedi's lid teks, I'm just going to stick them underneath. They just stick up under there is my way to achieve a one lid. I don't think I need adhesive or anything...? I just don't want to take time cutting all that whenever I just want straight and simple. He says just drill 1/4" hole in center of plastic lid and stick SFD underneath.

Seems wasteful if your doing 24+ jars.

Eventhough you don't want to still going to recommend you cut small circles and RTV them to the top of the lids. You need way less material and it will function a lot better. They will stay clean and be usable over and over.

Sfds are expensive. You could buy 5 and make enough lids for 20 plus jars. Or you can buy 24 and spend $. Some people have said they had issues with sfds coming off with rtv used to attach them. Ive literally run them hundreds of times for 10 plus years and had maybe two come off in that time.

I'm going to follow the lid Tek and use them as a whole piece under a plastic lid (with a hole drilled) in the middle. What side is which on an SFD? Should the granule filter material side go up against the lid underneath it so that's what you see through the hole? Or should the smooth side go up against underneath the lid?

Yea the cellulose filters suck.
I like to use whole sfds. Those plastic kids just don't seal. Whole sfd gives them a airtight seal. Plus the fucking lids warp even when left loose and I end up throwthimg them away it would be more wasteful of I was cutting and gluing sfds. Now that I switched to regular mouth I don't really have a warping problem, so I may start gluing bit for years I was using widemouth and damn near every other kid would warp in the PC and I don't sick around in a SAB with warped lids. Idk how shroomery can be so against whole sfds. I've had people damn near steaming out the ears trying to argue with me that I need to cut my sfds, when I don't wanna. They are my sfds if I wanna leave them whole I will I don't see how this upsets people so much.
Girls just wanna have fun.

Sounds like you have cellulose filters, I have some but never used them because there so thick. FungiP sells SFVs for a decent price. Iv run full SFVs under plastic lids my last couple of grows and I probably won’t go back. Edit: yep their my disk and it’s my money so if I want to spend $60 on 100 disks then what’s the problem

I have seen vendors sell Synthetic Filters as ship cellulose filters. I got boned once and stoped using said vendor. I'm not the kinda guy who will complain, I just move on to a new store.
Then bitch about it years later I guess.

What’s the difference?
When I was looking I saw a few called “cellulose synthetic filters”
Idk what kind I have but they’re pretty thick. I have one lid I got somewhere else that has a sfd that’s like a piece of bandaid over the hold, paper thin.
Still haven’t really gotten into the sfd lids. I have so many with tyvek already I’ve just been waiting til it needs to be changed and then gluing pieces of disk on.

For my plastic lids I moved to Syringe Filters. It is like an SFD Ina plastic holder. Hard to explain. Will post a picture tomorrow.

Do you use one big piece of tyvek and secure it over the metal lid with the ring? Does it all stay as one piece when you take it off the jar to inoculate? That's how you would have had to do that then right with taking the whole thing off?

Huh guess I better check which kind I have lol.
You can use the syringe filter for the ge hole? I have a billion just sitting in a box.
For the tyvek I traced the lid and cut out the circle and put two on top of each lid then screw the band on. After the pc usually one stays with the band and one stays on the lid. Then when I go to drop wedges or lc I’ll unscrew the band and take it off so it’s just the metal lid with the tyvek over it and lift that up to drop the wedges.

So two pieces? That’s not going to restrict too much GE?
So one tyvek circle comes off with the band, and the other stays stuck on the lid? Which was is your lid? With the red seal down or turned upside down?

I keep the lid normal never tried flipping it.

So doesn't that create an airtight vacuum seal whenever you open the lid? Usually those lids are hard to pry off and have to pop them off...

I might have to try that, got some from the post office. My only concern was that it will be all fumbly since it isn't a one piece lid. Do you take off everything separately and have to wipe it down in the SAB? Like do you take the ring off and the first piece of tyvek and have to wipe it all down? And then wipe the lid and other piece of tyvek?

Ill never go back to siloconed sfds. Was screwed by them before and I was unwilling to accept tbat they were my issue so I changed every variable over a years time until they were the only thing left to change.
I prefer this instead https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26498354/page/1

That’s a cool idea, i was thinking of doing something similar. I really like having a filter glued to the ge hole for doing g2g and wedge drops but I’ve had zero problems with tyvek and don’t totally trust the siliconed on little circle of sfd. So I was thinking I might as well just glue the sfd over the hole and then put a tyvek circle over that just in case.
That way I still have the tyvek but if I need to take the lid off I have the sfd which is better protection than a somewhat loose piece of paper.

Doesn't your tyvek get wet or have some condensation drops on it after removing the foil from the PC?

A little sometimes. Usually when I make the foil too short. If I make it so it’s tight around the lid and goes halfway down the jar then it’s usually dry.
A lot of people don’t even use foil so I guess it doesn’t matter but still do it lol.
