Steeping grains?
    #26521990 - 03/07/20 10:11 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I was soaking and steeping some rye grains, but some items that I ordered online have not come in yet. Is it a problem to still steep and soak rye grains for longer?

I can't go onto the next step until my lids come in.

Will this cause any problem? It will be have been soaking for 2 to 2 1/2 days. I wanted to start after 24 hours, but the items are a day or so late. Will this cause any problems steeping and soaking rye grains longer?

Probably be over hydrated.

What can I do? Did I just waste this grain?

I'm planning on doing a 10 boil at the end and let the steam evaporate. How does over hydration affect inoculation and grow?

I would rinse and drain them, dry them off, and put them in a tub in the fridge so they don't sprout or go off. I've kept WBS this way for a couple of days until they could be PC'd. Overhydration can happen from cooking, but if they are just being soaked in cold water they won't absorb too much or burst.

If I think my grains are looking too wet once they are in the jars, I add a small handful of dry, unprepped grain and shake. It absorbs the extra moisture in the PC cycle. Well, it works for me with WBS anyway, I haven't used rye.

I think it's better to err on the side of too dry than too wet. Overhydration can slow things down, and is favourable to bacteria.

Oh wow, it sounds like I wasted the grains. Seems like I need to throw them out, and start over and not let it go over 24 hours no matter what.  Now I have to trash all this grain :frown:

Nahh. Just boil them when your lids come in. By that I mean boil a pot of water, like hard boil...  Then add grains for 10-15 minuets tops. Drain and let air dry on a table with newspaper or painters paper underneath. Let the outside steam dry and mix them Abit. Then load them in your jars and PC.

I have soaked oats for up to 7 days with no issues.

These were fermented for 7 days.
