Question involving sterilization procedure
    #2649586 - 05/07/04 10:10 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, I was wondering if a croc pot would be as efficient as boiling the jars in any ole pot. I might get a PC but im not sure.

-Thanks

NO

you dont need a PC just a large pot with a lid and the stove.

if you are going to do it do it right and go out and buy a P.C. (about $65) -  if you are going to do pf tek a double boiler will work ($25) - spend the $ and get a P.C - don't chance the crock pot thing although it may work, but if it doesn't  all your time and work is pissed away

I used a crock pot to sterilize my jars. I left them in there for probably close to 5 hours though while I was out. I figured I'd leave them in there longer to compensate. I havn't had any problems yet but maybe I'm just lucky.

yes you are probably, its not something I would recomend. It may work here and there, but its not relaible, and who wants to waste that time, energy and money on spores/supplies to risk it not working.A normal onld spaggetti kettle will work fine,as long as the lid fits tight,if not just wrap foil around the lid and the rim,so it becomes a tighter seal.

if all else fails you can sterilize with a heavy pot with a towel in the bottom. rest the jars on top and fill about halfway up the jars. throw a lid on it and boil it slowly for about an hour
