What would YOU do with these?
#26521294 - 03/06/20 08:26 PM (3 years, 10 months ago) |

Found in landscape wood chips in Monterey, CA, a month ago, already dry from our California rain shutdown.
I decided to gather a haul, clean and dehydrate.
Extensive research left me ... mystified.
My initial post left me befuddled (but thank you).
Filled four jars with the dried mushrooms (with desiccant). These jars are staring at me nightly, waiting for... something to happen, I guess.

I would make tea π Or extract. Gyms usually taste horrible and are often weakly active. Never tried this species, though.

I donβt have the description handy but I think they we were originally described from a collection in Monterey. Maybe Mendocino. Some CA city that starts with a βMβ I believe. Those match the macro description perfectly.

Not so much a battle, more like a correction. Few people on this forum knows the Californian species better than Alan.

To answer the original post though, what I personally would do is not eat them unless desperate. Iβm curious, but not curious enough. I have a jar full as well and theyβve been sitting on my workbench for a long time.
IF I had to use them, Iβd throw them in a coffee grinder and press them into capsules. But I donβt microdose, so they just live in the jar for now.

^ Yeah, thanks for that HSapiensAmericanus - and Psilosadhu. I wonder how many of us mushroom hunters have the decorative Gym Jars in their garages, accumulating dust.
Well anyway, found my first Lion's Mane yesterday, a much safer alternative for consumption... for now.

Not a serious mistake at all. Worst case scenario here is that OP throws away some barely active mushrooms. An actual serious mistake would be identifying Galerina marginata as an active species. Donβt stir shit just to stir shit, thatβs not welcome here

I thought I'd come across more wind-dried Gyms yesterday on my mountain bike ride, but a closer look at the shriveled, gray gills makes me think H. capnoides? Yeah, mushroom identification is hard enough. Dry mushroom identification... ugh.

And Cryptoporus volvatus is making a hell of a showing. (their symbiotic relationship with bark beetles is astounding!)

And at home, Mr. Banana Slug is apparently convinced that my long-deliquesced A. mella. is still edible.

No one is 'guilty' in this case. Misidentifications happen from time to time. Doc9151 was corrected, and came forth to admit it.

By your logic Trusted Identifiers could just always tell people to throw away any mushroom they find. Better safe than sorry right? Just admit it. TI showed his incompetence and lack of knowledge and your asslicking won't change it.

Look here noone on Earth is 100% perfect at anything they do!! Everyone makes mistakes...He did not tell the OP to eat it he simply made a wrong call on a mushroom it happens and as a grown man he owned up to his mistake...And what the fuck...I mean do you think this website is run by a judicial system or something? Sit your childish ass down somewhere because we respect one another around here and the foul ass comments you are making won't make your stay here enjoyable. We understand Doc and still respect you to the fullest around here thanks for dedicating your time and knowledge to us

Anyone whom knows anything about mycology, will tell you that you obviously don't know what you are talking. Find just one verifiable mycologist that tells you that they have never missed an identification from pictures alone and I will kiss your ass. There isn't one person on this site that hasn't missed an identification, that's why it is recommended that you wait for several people to make an identification and not just one, but like I said, you find one professional that can say they have never misidentified mushrooms from pictures.
If you don't trust my identification skills you are welcome to block me, that way you don't see anything else that I say.
I have no shame or regret about the identification I made, anyone whomever knows me will tell you that I will be the first to admit my mistakes and the other Trusted identifiers will DEFINITELY speak up, along with the administration of shroomery if they thought that I was a danger to anyone or the site.
If you continue to make a issue of this it will be considered flaming and/trolling which is not allowed, enough has been said about this nonissue.
