Anyone ever had a bad IPA? 1

I was thinking about this the other day.. some are unarguably better than others, but I've never had a bad one. Do they exist?
If so, what made it bad to you?

oh my gosh yes. I hate about 50% of IPAs. They can be really way too bitter hoppy that leaves an awful pukey aftertaste, or make your soul cringe.
Too bitter is the main problem for me.

All the time. Hops do cover up flaws and infections pretty well though.
Most bad ones are poorly fermented and are worty tasting with super high finishing gravities. Lots of small breweries lie about abv no one checks it or tests it

What an ironic title
I hate all IPAs cause they are bitter and gross! I guess some are better than others (but still gross). But if i had to choose the worst out of all of them, I would go with the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale IPA.
Its fuckin disgusting https://sierranevada.com/beer/pale-ale/
If i had a choice between an IPA and water at a bar, im choosing the water everytime.

You build up a tolerance to the bitterness over time, and actual begin to get a kind of craving for it, similair to spicy food. I think the muscle relaxation of the hops also gets associated with that taste, so more reason to crave it.
I was big into IPAs back when they were hard to find, it was like a 45 minute drive to the nearest bar that had a selection of them. I got into them first for the high ABV, then started really liking the hoppyness. Rarely drink them now, I'm more into heavier brown ales and lagers. IPAs all just taste bitter since Im no longer used to them.
Had lots of bad ones even back when I liked them. Never was a fan of Dogfish 60 minute, the 90 minute was always a go to for me though

I like the bitterness. That was an acquired taste, but I already had a tolerance to it cuz of coffee. What really made me like IPAs is the hoppyness. Really fond of the piney and citrusy ones.

People say it tastes like soap and I have no idea how they link those two. It has a peculiar, strong flavor, but I have to wonder if any of these people have ever actually tasted soap.
What a weird coincidence.

I've probably tried a dozen or so IPAs and didn't like any of them. I've actually poured out a number of 6 packs because they were undrinkable. Its just not an enjoyable experience to me, I think they're fairly horrific as far as alcohol goes. It's the beer equivalent of nail polish vodka. Lol. My favourite beers are ales, Innis & Gunn has been good to me

Word up! I went to the one in Jacksonville last week and I said the very same thing to myself. And it was like $15 for a tall can of day drinkin beer. I got a beer, pepsi, an aight sausage, and a pretzel made of sand for $33. It was a dam good time tho.
As far as IPA's I think it is a genetic code that allows you to like IPA's. Never had a bad one!? Im adventurous about beer but over 50% are bad to me. But, I have had some good random ones before at bars and from grocery stores. Guess I have to be in the mood for it. Try some of the 11%+. Theres one in a city south of me thats 18%!! Actually not sure if its an IPA or not but its a lighter looking beer that hits hard af.

I haven't seen any of the ones listed yet. I want to try one of these bad ones. I wanna know if I just have low standards or I just manage to always pick a good one.
Well logical mentioned one I like. Sierra Nevada but he says he doesn't like any of them. It's not my favorite beer, but I like it enough to buy it more than once. I've tried at least a dozen or two different ones. Never had one I wouldn't buy again. Sculpin by ballast point is one of my favorites. It's got a very strong taste though. If you don't like the bitterness of IPAs, that's definitely one you won't like.

The Shaman appears well-adapted to a variety of substances.

Everytime someone offers me a can of IPA, i take one sip, instantly regret it then secretly dump out the rest or leave it behind somewhere as the night goes on. I feel kinda bad it but id rather not refuse a drink. I dunno

I usually find it's a small or local brewery that makes shitty IPA's.
Although every IPA is better than a GOSE beer. That shit tastes like literal vomit.
Brickstone Brewery makes an APA that is top-notch. I've found most of their selection to be pretty good.

I do prefer other beers to IPAs though(chocolate stout, belgium style ale, sours, etc). But I also do prefer other drinks to beer, in general.

Lol I've had that before once or twice. There was a place around here where you could build your own 6 pack and I tried that one out. I didn't mind it but then again it's really hard for me to find a beer that I truly hate. I love beer (a little too much) and even the beers I don't care for I will always finish and enjoy even if I wouldn't order another one of those.

Hey guys I worked at******* for the last four years. When I finally got fired all they said was. "We don't like your sarcasm and "you dont like IPA's"
They would lie constantly about ABV in the can and changed the recipe ALL OF TIME. roobs still come in and love it.

I was the head cellarman at the time. Shortly after i was let go the head brewer quit cause their quality was no longer existent. People still eat it up cause they love the cans. The owner E*** does mad cock. (on the can) ( I know normal for important businessman ) Also a raging non-confrontational pussy who forgot how to brew and cannot even use his own 20bbl system

If i had a choice between an IPA and water at a bar, im choosing the water everytime.
You're weird. Do you drink bud light? Cuz that's basically water. When I went to monster jam, all they served was light beer. I was in hell... I'm at the most red neck sport event ever and my choices are bud light, Miller light and Michelob ultra.. what the fuck.
IPA stands for India Pale Ale, it's a light beer. Pale ale certainly has more character than a Pilsner, but it's still light. There's a whole range of beers out there that aren't light, many of which are also not bitter. Milk Stout, Amber, Black Lager, Octoberfest. Or there are light beers with flavors other than bitter (the predominant flavor in both pale ales and pilsners) saison, lambic, cream ale and so many other choices. I don't know why Americans so often want their beer to taste like either strong hop tea (IPA) or weak hop tea (Pilsners like Miller Light and Michelob Ultra)

You may be technically correct but when I say light beer, I'm talking about "American light beer" which is in no way (other than maybe technicalities and semantics) in any league with IPAs. "Light beer" (as in bud light, Miller light etc) literally tastes like you decided to pour a hot beer over a cup of ice and waited until the ice completely melted before drinking it. I also refuse to believe the ABV they claim because it doesn't matter how fast I drink them, I will never get a buzz. I've never had a problem getting buzzed off drinking IPAs at a normal rate. So yet another way they are completely different.
And why would Americans want IPAs? The predominate beers here have for so long been Budweiser, Miller, Coors etc and they all basically taste the same. It's like introducing steak to a country who has only ever had ground beef.

IPA's tend to be higher ABV because they were originally made to ship to India. The Steak VS Ground beef comparison makes sense, as someone who prefers lamb it confuses me that Americans only like beef. (or hops, grain tastes better than hops, and so does yeast)

Can someone please explain the concept of an IPA and how it became a thing. I live in a hot temperate climat and although i love a good ale, including IPA, there's no way in hell that it's my beer choice in the Summer months. India is more humid and hotter that Australia. If i were over there i'd say fuck off with the IPA, give me a larger or else i'll just drink water. I just can't comprehend how an IPA could be associated with a country which it'd be god awful to consume within. It's too hot in India for IPA. Does that make sense to anyone else?

Wait why is an IPA no good in the summer? The hotter it is outside the more refreshing the beer is even IPA.
The old day IPA is no resemblance to IPAs of today. IPA is all a product of hop breeding not a need to make a beer with low infection risk. It's like weed, people are after new flavors. Hence IPAs showcasing the fancy new hops

Hops and weed make each other taste bad. Seriously. you cannot enjoy the flavor of a bud if you are drinking an IPA.
Sours and weed go together great. Stouts and weed are great too. A good old fashion blunt with an imperial stout is the best combo.
Corona and Haze is the worst combo possible

nah man it not. lets just agree to disagree. Its verry possible to pick up subtle differences in IPAs.Apposing flavors are great. Thats why they put coffee in a perfume isle. Mixing perfumes is not great. its kinda the same idea.

I used to run the lab at a brewery and run the taste testing too. I can watch people pick up on introduced flavors added in at threshold of detection levels after smoking weed. Some people were bad tasters every day every time. Some people are excellent tasters.
I could put two PPM of iso-humulone extract in a beer and leave one a control. This is a 2 IBU difference. And some people easily notice and some people couldn't perceive it at all.
It's so individualistic that it really boils down to the individual. You don't know how well or not you taste until you do some blind taste experiments.
I would do double blind tastings. Our beers and buy some competition beers of the same style. It's always awesome hearing owners say they got the best shit and rate their own products near last or dead last vs beer they call shit and would never buy.

Had this one employee at one brewery. In the 20k bbl/yr size range. This guy worked packaging not production. Always would remark about the beer. Man tastes off or this batch isn't as good. Or this ones buttery. Etc.. and the owners were like fuck this guy cant taste for shit wanted to fire him for talking shit. So normally we wouldn't pull people from packaging to come to do tastings. So finally get tastings setup to actually be a productive experiment rather than a social drinking event. And bring along this guy. And i get all the off flavors dosed out into coors light at threshold levels against control coors light. Using coors as the most blank tasteless canvas. This guy from packaging scores best on identification of which of the beers was the control and which was the tainted one not only that without knowledge of the scientific names of the "taints" he nearly correctly described all of them. Grassy, buttery, papery, green apple, fake banana, etc..

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to different categories of beer but I find a lot of trendy modern beers pretty overpowering with hops. I do like beers with a grapefruity taste to the hops though.

I find that anything 50IBU and less isn't really bitter, of course there are exceptions.
Didn't really care for IPA, but have developed a taste for them over the years, i prefer the citrus variety's, don't care for the 'all day ipa' stles either. Ordered founders breakfast stout and they brought me out the all day ipa.... said nothing. I tried it, it was ok ... dank 1/4 ...changed my mind on 'being nice' and then made them bring me a different beer ... i choose a triple and it was much better

Session beers are the lamest, every beer is a sessionable if you drink them... if I’m getting hit with the calories I’m rocking 7-12%abv or it’s not worth my weight gain

The old day IPA is no resemblance to IPAs of today. IPA is all a product of hop breeding not a need to make a beer with low infection risk. It's like weed, people are after new flavors. Hence IPAs showcasing the fancy new hops
I believe the reason is that warm beer has a stronger flavor than chilled beer, therefore making IPAs taste "worst" in the summertime.
I experienced this with Deschutes Citrus IPA at a party. Tasted alright to start but once that beer warmed up, it became undrinkable and i had to abandon it half way thru.

I love the taste of fresh cubensis. Idk if I’m an IPA lover though, my favorite beer is a perpetual IPA by troegs
