Instapot Sterilization?

Hello,
I’m just starting out and I thought I would begin with cloning and creating agar. This way if my agar becomes moldy I know I need to work on my sterile technique. I have pretty much all the equipment needed to start cloning but I do not have a pressure cooker. I do however have an instapot. I am short on space and I already have one so I was hopping to use this for starting out at least. I know it’s not ideal but I thought maybe it was worth a shot.
I haven't found too much information online with my searches. Lots of people mixing up terms for “sterilization” and “sanitation” doesn’t help. I have found some information saying why it may work but I was hoping to have some people with real experience determine if my logic is sound or have successfully does this themselves. I have some information and links below that help for the argument that an instapot would work.
Any input would be great, thanks!
I found an article stating that the instapot can provide scientific grade sterilization. Instapot sterilization?
The CDC states that for sterilization there needs to be a pressure of 15psi and a temp of 250F. CDC sterilization definition
I found a reddit post stating the instapot can achieve this at 0 elevation and I’m currently living at sea level. Instapot temp
Lastly I found an old post asking the same question then stating that it worked out for him. Past Post

I found this thread from last week: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26508366
TLDR; you can use it but at 10psi you'll probably want to double 15psi times making the small volume of the instant pot an even larger handicap

Thanks for the reply! Do you think that increased time will caramalize the agar?

I doubt it. It is temperature dependent and at the lower pressure you are at a lower temperature.
Thought this was funny though:
Quote:
Caramelisation is a complex, poorly understood process that produces hundreds of chemical products, and includes the following types of reaction:
equilibration of anomeric and ring forms sucrose inversion to fructose and glucose condensation reactions intramolecular bonding isomerization of aldoses to ketoses dehydration reactions fragmentation reactions unsaturated polymer formation

Oh ya that would make sense. Good way to say that’s it’s a complex process lol. Thanks! I’m going to try it and see what comes of it, mind as well while I’m learning

I don't have experience with agar and instapot, but I used it for pf tek. It's not perfect, but it works. 1 out of 12 jars ended up contaminated in a random spot (further away from inoculation points, so I know it's instantpots fault). However, 11 other jars are fine. I did 3hours for my first 4jars (one of which ended up with contam), and 4 hours for the rest of them. I'm also interested in making agar with it, but I guess it would be a tougher gamble than with jars. Also I wouldn't just double the time from 15psi, more like quadruple it. Saw some chart in the past, it said you would need much more time with 10psi when compared to 15psi.

Oh interesting, I’m going to try to find that chart! Ya I was a fool and just assumed the instapot would work while doing weeks of research. Randomly I thought I should check it out lol. I’ll post my findings so hopefully it will help someone in the future. Hopefully it works because I’m going to need a bigger house soon lol

I use an electric PC similar to the instapot for small batches of pasty plates. I set it for 35 to 40 mins on low (supposedly 8-10PSI) and have yet to have a contam. YMMV but works just fine in my experience

I use an instant pot no problem. But I bought it thinking I could pick the psi which wasn’t the case. I had go read through the booklet and luckily the highest setting cooks at 15 psi. For me that’s a chicken/meat setting. I usually run it for two hours instead of one or one and a half.

Oh interesting. What’s the brand? If low for that is 8-10psi I should be fine at 10+psi. Have you used it to sterilize anything else? Thanks!

Oh perfect! Just the answer I was looking for! Is that the time you use for everything? Or just agar? Thanks a ton!

Liquid sterilizes much easier, i didn’t realize you were only talking agar you shouldn’t have any problems with that.
For future reference I was talking quarts of wbs.

Oh wow! So ya it really shouldn’t be any problem. I’m going to try when I get home. There’s a lot of mixed opinions about the instapot but this thread has given me hope! Thanks again!

Heed A.k.a's caution. Grain may present more of a problem, and agar is only the first step.

Ok will do! I’m first just going to play around with agar & lc for now and when I want to inoculate I’m just going to get a pre-made bag. I’m just excited that I can move foreword to some degree. Been reading a lot but haven’t taken the first step. Thanks so much for the help!

Nothing wrong will playing around and learning what you can. But you can't just take shortcuts later and expect success. Read the teks that TCs have provided here and follow them carefully when you choose to move forward.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend electric PC for grains. Probably can work but just unneccesary risk. The one I have is a Ninja Foodi. Got it as a gift wouldn't recommend going out and buying one lol. I use my basic ass crockpot and air fryer more than this thing (for actual cooking that is)

Ok will do! Been reading radical mycology, psilocybin mushroom handbook and these forums. I want to try to get each step memorized before I move on to another step. The only step right now that is going to be a hindrance is making my own substrate. Thank you for the help! Awesome welcome into the forum from everyone!

You can always get a 6.6 quart T -fal for cheaper option than an instant pot. You are limited to pint jars of grain or 1/2 pint of jars, mine works fine in small batches. And I use 250 ml agar jars for poured agar
