I'm looking for suggestions on something not too new and not too old.  I was leaning towards a Nissan frontier 2003 manual, but I'm open to suggestions. Around 5-6000$ range. I'm planning to drive north fro Washington state to the Canadian arctic via the dempster highway. lol.  Remember we was talking bout places to travel to? Well, this is gonna be a test run.  I wanna do it this summer , but might have to wait till November cause I'm not able to make it to the passport office in time

Looks like you want a truck not a car. Correct?

Nissan Frontier is a good choice. Toyota makes excellent trucks as well. Ford and Chevy make decent trucks too. But finding a manual might be tricky thou.....

Get a car, throw some big tires on it. You'll get a lot more vehicle for your money. For that type of trip you definitely want something in decent condition, and cheap trucks tend to be hammered.

Were you already looking for a new ride? If the car is just for a short vacation you might just rent one.

Id say go for the Frontier for sure. I had an 04 manual for 5 years and never had to do a single thing to it. My neighbor hit me a few months ago and totaled it. I about got sick. I recently got a 2014 F150 with the Coyote 5.0 in it. The things a beast. I drove my little brothers car for a few months until i got my new truck and it killed me. When i got my new one it felt like i was home again.

If you want a Nissan don't buy a Titan. Pre 2007 Rams and Pre 2004 F150s are good. For the love of god don't buy a 2007+ Ram. Lifters and head gaskets. Tundras are good trucks for most years. A good tip is that a bigger engine doesn't make it more reliable.. Honestly just buy yourself a Toyota and not look back

Trucks and SUVS are garbage vehicles. They have the largest profit margins because they use the lowest quality components and construction.

If you’re actually worried about off roading, that trip is pretty tame, get an awd drive car or small SUV that’s built on a car chassis. Put large tires on it and it will do excellent, better than a truck because you’ll get independent suspension and properly modulated differentials.

And also, never buy a Dodge. They are total shit. Jeeps too, with only a few rare exceptions.

For the record, I once managed a fleet of 60 vehicles and have some 15 years experience in the auto industry. A lot of the common knowledge out there is flat out wrong. People think they understand cars despite knowing absolutely nothing about them.

Trucks don't have to be good, they're service vehicles by nature so they can just put shit parts on it and make you pay for new ones because you might just actually need the truck :cookiemonster:

The vast majority of truck owners don't use them or have a fucking clue why they suck so bad, so they end up with an over priced piece of shit just to impress their neighbors. Most pickup trucks are like sports cars in that they only have 2 seats, except that they handle terrible, get shit mileage, are awful in crashes, have 1940's era drive train, and are marked up 20% more than other vehicles thanks to morons thinking they need one the first time a snow flake hits the ground. The bad news is that trucks are terrible in slick conditions by their own very nature. All of the trucks I've owned I bought them to pull trailers, there was only one that was decent. That was a 2004 Dodge Ram (yes I hate Dodge), but it had a Cummins diesel with a 6 speed manual. That truck was beast. Although the front axles loved to fall off, the lower ball joints were shit, and the clutch was a constant point of maintenance. But when you pull a 34 foot trailer all over North America things get dicey. I did manage nearly 20mpg with that truck though, and you could blast up hills at 75mph even with a load in the trailer. The torque was incredible!

That said, some people do need the utility, but it's only like 3% of buyers. The rest just like to jerk off to the fantasy of being a badass truck owner. It's role play, much like Harley owners.

Yes, that was my first thought,  but I heard that gravel roads like the Dempster highway I wanna ride could damage windshields and I don't wanna be responsible for that on a rental. However , a semi old beater type car might be ok.  Plus I a can park lt somewhere and continue my roadtrip another time.

I dont plan to offroad.  Maybe a beach or light trail. Nothing crazy thou

I've actually always wanted a Subaru outback.  They seem like nice little cars. Probably be best to wait till I get to Seattle and see what they have to offer

People that buy trucks and don’t use them are dipshits. Is that what we’re talking about here? I mean if I could fit my yz250, sportsman 500 and a 750 brute force in the trunk of a car then I might would consider it but I can’t. That’s why I have a truck. If you don’t need one then by all means get a forester or some shit. But if you’re wanting to haul any kind of anything then good luck besides maybe a waverunner.

Also not sure which way you swing but if you like women, see how much more pussy you pull in a clean lifted F250 or Z71 with some super swampers. Not saying Subaru’s aren’t good little cars but every body I know driving one is either a wannabe hippy that thinks they’re saving the universe or a feminist. It sucks the Subaru’s have that reputation now.

And the most important part is in case you wreck. My little brother was killed 7 years ago. He was riding home from school with one of his retarded ass friends. They were in a 95 escort (small coupe for those that don’t know). They were huffing air duster and he passed out, pushed the gas pedal, and got to 80 before hitting an island at a red light and plowing into an F250. It crushed the whole passenger side that my brother was sitting on and killed him instantly. Now obviously this happened because of the air duster but who knows when someone might do the same to you. The passenger In the F250 got a fractured leg or something but that was it.

All I’m trying to say is that until something like that happens to you you just don’t really think about it, we didn’t anyway. So, when my other truck was totaled I made a promise to myself that I’d be the one sitting on top of someone if they hit me again. And I will be with my new truck. So even if you’re not going to use a truck as much for hauling or whatever then it may not be a bad idea to have for just safety features unless you absolutely need a car. Just if you do get a full size truck or any full size vehicle for that matter, make sure you get used to driving it before getting on actual road. There’s so many people that I guess learned to drive with a small car then get a big ass truck and can’t keep it in the lane. It seemed like when I was driving the car in between having a truck those people didn’t give a shit. Like they just ignored me or knew if I hit them it wouldn’t affect them any. Now when they see me coming they tend to stay to the other side.

I guess my main thing is I just don’t trust these people driving. There’s people that come into work and ask what time it is when there’s literally 6 clocks all around their head and 2 in front of their face. I mean the thought of those dumbasses getting into a 2 ton block of steel and shit and driving 60 mph just scares the shit out of me. Why I got rid of my motorcycle too. So that’s definitely something to think about.

Honestly though man just get what you like and make sure to look over it well. Like i said though those trucks hold their value. I got mine for 6k and got 6.7k from the insurance company so I made money on a vehicle I drove for 5 years and put 65k miles on. Just do lots of research. Vehicles are going to be different for everyone. Anything not leaking or burning oil and under 130k miles and not rusty should for the most part be ok. Don’t get anything with anything tweaked. I always hated people putting a whole bunch of shit on Craigslist with shit they probably don’t know anything about trying to talk you into their ricer. You can usually find an older guy with a truck around that year for pretty cheap that’s what id try first. And don’t jump on something until you know for sure. It took me a while to learn that and I went through a few lemons or just shit I didn’t like because I started to rush.

I know no one will probably read all that but im a little tweaked so fuck it lol. Get you a truck bro. You won’t look back.

I just saw a 2009 Corolla for sale for 4800$ .  I think a big influence here is gas, considering if I buy in Washington,  I have to go back to Texas to get it registered and back to Washington. On top of that, I may surprise my family in Pennsylvania,  my friend in Ohio and Nebraska. that's a road trip before my road.  I feel like on tripping.  It's a big debate weather a should buy/ rent a car , buy in Washington or fly bvb back to texas to buy.  Then I'd miss out on hitting the road and seeing some sights. Anyways, I have a little over a month to figure it out. I honestly won't know till the last minute what I decide to do

Dont buy that car. 2009 Corolla is the worst possible Corolla to buy. I'm not kidding. You buy that thing and I'm gonna :haha: when you say it blew up or is falling apart. That's how serious I am

I would like to present the paradox that is vehicle manufacturing itself, there are a wide variety of manufactures, years, and purpose that were built to last a long time. I'm going to list some vehicles of differnt classes that I have found to be in yhe upper echelon of longevity and reliability.

1965-1979 ford f100 long, short, ford 300 6 cyclender. Half a million mile motor. Self servicable, parts in every auto parts store,
03-08 Ford crown victoria. Suspension suspension suspension. Gonna get you there, will go through some shit, for a car. Could carry a family of 5.
2001-2003 ford focus hatchback 5sp. Very reliable toy. Handling is top notch. Fun in the snow.
Reliable commuter, 2008-2012 cadillac cts. Can find this car dirt cheap and running exceptional the 3.6 vvt is a well engineered motor being at the top of its list the later the year. Cheapest luxury on the market.
More to trucks...
Ford rangers and s10s are equally servicable reliable, cheap, get the job done, and respectable if your going it solo or 2, travling light. Best drunk fishing moments in america take place in the back of one.
A 2005 chevy 1500 longbed with 5.3 ls vortec and low miles and taken care of well is an almost garenteed bet aswell.

Dream build: 1969 ford f100 with a crown vic independent front susp, 2015 mustang coyote motor all naturally aspirated, 2015 mustang IRS, or 8.8 merc mountaineer solid axle rear end. All.this would essentially accomplish the best powered, ride height, reliable, best looking...

You're much better off financing a slightly used car. Get yourself a low mileage audi or Infiniti. Use that 5-6k as a hefty downpayment on a slightly older used model and you'll get yourself an amazing deal while improving your credit.
