Three pound bag of colonized millet (unbroken) on foil on perlite in sweater box (photo)

I failed miserably at open-air spawning to bulk. I was using dirty MS syringes to dirty grain bags to dirty substrate in a dirty house, all done by a dirty practitioner (house looks clean, but the air is chuck full of you-name-its). I almost have complete set of gear, but have three spawn bags ready, and was not about to crumble another one to bulk substrate in open-air after several failures . I will dubtub this when/if things get going. Any tips appreciated. I am in phase 2 of noobness (though advanced in age; which condition better count for something). Next will be BRF cakes grown in jars, then cloning to agar.

that will perform weak at best. Very possible you will get no flush at all. How are you pasteurizing? Have you tried coir?

My previous substrate (cvg) was bought pre-made from a sponsor, as was everything else. I either had mediocre spores or dirtiness from one or more vectors. Wouldn't this blob act like brf cakes? Would it help to break it into big pieces?

Cubes don’t like pinning on grains and grains don’t hold enough water to produce big fruit.
You should crumple that to coir at 1:1 ratio. That’s what I do if I suspect my spawn is bacterial. Either way, you’ll get more yield that way.
At least roll that thing in verm/coir...

OK. So millet not good for fruiting (good point). I still have two five-pound bags of pre-made cvg substrate, so I will try a one-to-one mix for this one. Thank you. Such disappointment, I am already looking forward to the aforementioned 'back-step' to BRF, then learning agar. Also, I have just started doing the open-air step (spawn to bulk) under the kitchen stove exhaust, which in this house, will itself be a great improvement.

Abracadabra:
The drilled box with microspore tape is a first for me. Plus, I mixed this under the exhaust hood. I feel better already. Thanks to tips

Looks good! Use 2 layers of mp tape until pinning, if you aren’t already.
The most difficult part is still ahead - Patience Tek. You gotta avoid fidgeting with it for at least a week. Sounds easy but it. is. not.

I'm through the fidget part, I hope (23 quart PC arrived today). This is tub #6. FEA seems zero-ish to me with one layer of tape, but I'll add a layer, then. Funny, that I was trying to go straight to unmodified-tub in such poor-air conditions. I know they say that a strong colony dominates, but I'm not there yet.

It’s deceptive. I’ve been keeping 2 layers on until pins are about 1in, then taking all the tape off altogether. Seems to have improved yields and pinsets. My only issue atm is tubs maturing over the course of days, which means I have to harvest the same flush 2-3 times....which is a bitch lol

I’m pretty sure hpoo isn’t the issue. No offense or anything. It’s just

From the looks of it I don’t see any issues with OP’s grow I was just suggesting he spawn to bulk for better yield, coir is great for growing mushrooms personally I prefer to use hpoo in my mix because it is free and cubensis grows on dung in the wild.

Once your grain is colonized the open air dirtiness isn’t an issue.
I would definitely take at least part of that monster and mix it to coir. That’s a big block of potential right there.
Have you tried shoeboxes?

I just ordered coir bricks, so they won't be part of this go. I want to do shoeboxes after I practice agar plates inoculated to PC'ed oats (now that I have a PC). I will definitely be doing BRF tomorrow as I have everything on hand... for getting some Santitos (little saints, as they say in Mexico) for medicinal use, and to clone to agar. I need probability over production until I get more experience with my new gear.

Not sure if youve stumbled across this yet https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24144021 Lots of reading i know, but that will increase your knowledge substantially(theres even videos on certain things to show how easy it can be)

Yes. I linked his jar-grow in OP, and refer back to his teks. Also pastywhite drilled tubs. I still don't trust the air in this house at spawn-to-bulk, but that may be because I doubted the spawn, because I doubted the spores All the info goes fractal fast. I am rapidly funneling it through hands-on practice. I'd probably be happy with jar-grows from MS Spore all things considered, but will get the plastic petris when they are back in stock, and start into agar.
