Lost the battle to mold, let's still salvage this tub
    #26517957 - 03/05/20 04:54 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

My monotub has been colonizing for a bit over a week so far yet I only see patches of white all over. It has a weird funky smell, doesn't smell mushroomy. Should I just leave it and stop checking on it, or toss it and start fresh?

1lb colonized oats with hydrated coir, gypsum, verm. Substrate is around 4 inches deep.

<1 week, 3 days>

<1 week, 6 days> - cracked lid slightly and removed tape, smell has improved but only slightly

<2 weeks, 2 days> - smell slightly improving

<2 weeks, 5 days> - spotted some cobweb mold, purchased some h2o2 but it won't be arriving for a while so I used a wet paper towel covered with salt for the moment. it's worked quite a bit, will probably put into fruiting soon as i can see a pin

<2 weeks, 6 days> - no photo, but I saw a decent coverage of green mold earlier :frown:. I cut this part out, salted the wounds and sprayed with 3% H2O2. I'm still going to see if this fruits anything but I can't wait to be starting fresh soon

will post photos if the mold comes back, ive put the tub into fruiting and time will tell if anything i've done will help (though I have no expectations rn)

Hard to say without pictures.

Normally any funky smell is bad, but how did you make your mono tub substrate ?

My rule of thumb is: if you have a doubt, there is no doubt. Start again.

Its impossible to say without photos what the issue is, but if u smell funky odors, then something went wrong....

Don't listen to the shitty advice to just toss while you have not provided pictures - you have not provided enough information for someone experienced to give a good advice. Too many people here parrot what TCs say "to toss it" without experience and understanding of why they say that. A lot of TCs have many tubs going on at the same time and in different stages of growth, so for them "tossing it" is optimising their time spent vs yields (and tossing 5/50 is not the same as 1/2). If you only have a box or two, it can't hurt to wait out if you are not sure yet (until you are).

Unless you have a new batch of fresh grains waiting to be spawned in this exact monotub or need to free up space, it can't hurt to wait a bit longer. You can always use this as a learning experience and perhaps if you are growing contaminants there, next time you will know earlier when to "toss it" based on this "weird smell" - perhaps even before spawning.

Weird smell is a very vague term  have you done monotubs before? Does it smell differently than other times?  Are you sure that is not the smell of wet coir? (kind of sweet, earthy?).

It has only been colonising for a week - what did you expect to happen in this period? It is too early for pins to show up for sure.

Dunno what parrots and TCs have to do with anything....

But, anyway, get us some pics, non-mushroomy smells are generally not a good sign.

Gotta think of the right place, gonna toss it if I see nothing else in a week.

I combined verm, gypsum and hydrated coir for the sub, I've attached photos here, let me know any additional thoughts.

Something 100% went wrong, must've been an issue with spawn yet it smelled fucking beautiful before I spawned to bulk.

Thanks for the information, definitely gonna take a lot more into account in my second run. I've never done a monotub but now after reading up more, I 'll know how to make way less mistakes next time. I should have clarified rather than just saying "weird smell". It smelt differently to the spawn, which again smelt perfect. The smell is slightly sour and might be bacterial, but it doesn't smell horrendous. Just a slight fart smell lmao. I expected too much, I mixed my spawn with the sub rather than sandwiching it. I'm still a noob but everyone's gotta start somewhere.

I'm hoping that when it colonizes more, the smell will go away. But visually (to me) there are no contams.

Hmmmm. Kinda looks like yeast (the yellow patchy stuff). Are you doing a PF tek bulk grow or something? This doesnt look like a grain grow.

I think the yellowing you might be seeing is the reflection of the flash off the verm bits that are shiny.  I could be wrong though.

I’d remove the tape you have covering those holes.. the holes are small enough that it doesn’t need it.. maybe crack the lid slightly and see if the smell subsides

Faht

I innoc'd a 1lb bag of oats, let it colonize and spawned to bulk.

Lmao I used a warm orange lamp to inspect the sub more closely, prob why it looks yellow. Was planning to remove the tape during fruiting, but I'll do it now. Thanks!!

Yeah it’s ready to fruit if it’s fully colonized.. a lot of ppl start tubs in fruiting conditions right away. If you have a fan going in the room, I’d turn it off when you remove the tape

Good luck!

Yes, i see the reflectiveness now. It fooled me!

Ive seen a mold before that looked just like gold/yellow spots like the reflective verm in the photo.

Didn't even know that, pretty cool to see how everyone has different techniques and end up with 'fruitful' (pun intended) results. Appreciate the help, btw your gallery is insane!  :bow2:  :bow2:

Hahah I get you, should've used a different light. If it was actually yeast, would still be able to use it for pizza

Read up somewhere that wax paper can be placed on top to help colonization times? Dk if I should try it out or not

As far as I have read here from some experienced TCs - that is a very outdated approach and is unnecessary.

With regards to your update - it does look like there has been some growth on the surface so the tub is doing something but hard to tell if it is healthy, sometimes completely clean spawn is just slow to colonise substrate no matter what.

The sour smell is not a good sign but at this point all you can do is wait. If it is contaminated nothing you do can "cure" it  and with CVG substrate almost certainly the problem was with grains before you spawned and not after spawning.

I thought so, it didn't seem to me like it would help much so I didn't bother. I was careless with innocing so that may very well be the issue. I'm gonna put it away for the rest of the week then update the thread with more pics, just want to put this bitch into fruiting
