Flow hood build
    #26517417 - 03/04/20 08:59 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys so I recently decided that a flow hood build is the best move I can make to try agar again, I have tried a SAB and it was not for me. I want something that doesn’t constrain my arms. I have decided that a 24x24x12 hepa is what I want to use, I live in an apartment so I can’t have a full-size 24x48 but this one will do for my needs. The only issue that I am running into is finding a blower fan that will produce the correct amount of cfm for the size of the filter with a 1.0iwg resistance. Every fan either falls below 400cfm at 1.0 resistance or is way over powered. Does anyone on here have a blower fan link they could send to me I’ve been searching for about 2 weeks and have came up with nothing. I’m getting the 1.0 resistance from .8 at the hepa and .2 at the prefilter. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Ps. Sorry if this is the wrong forum I honestly didn’t know where would be best to post this question.

What CFM do you want?

The first thing you can do is check the quality of your filters. HEPA are not all the same. I compared Philips and some no-name taobao filter, and found the former allowed a lot more air through. However, I never measured the resistance of either filter. Something else to consider is using two filters in parallel, then directing all the air back together to your 24x24 work area. Of course if you do that it won't be lamellar flow anymore, unless you do something clever to re-guide it, passing the air through a frame filled with one inch sections of plastic straws.

You may want to look at the Dayton 1xjx7 or 1xjx8. Or the Dayton 1tdu2 will work but you will have to bog it down by closing off part of the intake.

:whathesaid:

1tdu2 is what you want. Use a nice thick prefilter and you’ll be in acceptable range. I use one for a 2x3 and its a little fast without any prefilter but perfect with a light one

What’s wrong with a sab? Obviously it’s best practice to use a hood but they don’t magically make contams impossible. If your sterile tech is really bad you can still contam plates under the flow.

Have you checked craigslist? I found several cheap ones that were more than enough, dialed them down with fan speed controllers

Check the build guide in my sig for details

It’s not the fact that my procedure was off I just truly didn’t like using it as a personal preference. Also thank you guys for the support I’ll look into these blowers and hopefully have a progress post as things start to come together! Thanks a ton!

The 1tdu2 is the one you want unless you want to go out hunting and experimenting.  You can find old blowers at A/C shops but you'll have to test them for flow and probably put a speed controller on them.  I found a 1tdu2 on eBay that had minor damage for cheap.
