BRF tek with 1/4 jar pints ?

Hi ! So a friend of mine is gathering all the items for his first batch ! He got vermiculite, perlite, getting soon B+, he made a S.A.B and someone gave him a pressure cooker ! An hamilton beach 37541. It seems nice and all but it only has the capacity for 1/4 jars. I tried to do research but I did'nt find clear answer. first one : For 1/2 pint jar, 1/2 to 1 CC of spore would be ideal, for 1/4, would 1/4 to 1/2 CC be perfect ? How many time should I let my substract jar in the PC ? My PC have many option : Rice, whole grain, heat/simmer, and steam cooking. Since he will work with 1/4 jar, does it need half the time of a 1/2 jar to get sterilized ? someone suggested me that my PC was 12psi, but even if i read the manual, I can't find that info anywhere On a another thread someone mentionned trying with a ''dumm'' jar, just to verify how it goes, I know that the substract before PC shouldn't be too wet or too dry but what should look like a good sterilized jarr ? A lot of questions since i'm new to this but i'm really curious about that ! thanks you

I'm sure someone who knows a thing or two about mushrooms will chime in soon, but why not just buy a pressure cooker that fits 1/2 pints and then buy some 1/2 pint jars? You're looking at less than $100 for that.

I thought about that too !... but I read about it and it seems that it may worth it to work with 1/4 pints, and if there's contam, I won't loose 1CC, but maybe juste 1/2. I was thinking about it and if nobody answers me I will just try to steam my jar for 90min, I will add water every 30mins and see how it goes, I will only sterilize one jar first and if I have no contam after this one I will continue that way.

You can't add water every 30 minutes. You'll let all the steam that has built up out. BRF takes a long time. I'm in the middle of my first grow myself. Save yourself the frustration of having to start over and do the Tek the right way. Get a PC, get 1/2 pint jars, make a SAB, get a propane torch.

My PC has many options, it seems that the ''cook rice'' option can run longer, but I don't know at what temperature. I am making an SAB, and for the torch, a lighter to sterilize the needle isn't enough ? I have torch lighter if needed.
With the U.s to CAN money exchange, my single spore seringue cost me almost 42$, 8$ of vermiculite, 7$ of perlite, 8$ of brown rice, 27$ for the two box that will make the S.AB and the FC, 8$ for gloves, 10$ for polyfill, 9$ for mason jars. I have isopropyl alcool 4$, contam killer spray 5$
If I can save myself to buy a second PC, I would be happy

What tek are you following? Any of the pressure cooker teks answer most of the questions you have.
If your PC is 12 PSI, it will take about 50% longer to sterilize your jars (so about 2-3 hours instead of 1.5-2 hours)
I highly recommend you do not inoculate your spawn with spores. Spore syringes are almost always dirty. Yeah, you'll have to spend some more money to get agar supplies, but the alternative is possibly wasting your time because you got a dirty syringe.

I read a lot of teks in the last week so i'm little confused but I was planning on doing the BRF cake tek. Do you have an agar tek to recommand me ?
I was reading about my PC and I was wondering ;they say that the jar should not touch the bottom of the PC but can the water level be just below the lids ? So it won't run out of water

You can use 1/4 jars just like 1/2. It will just make smaller cakes. Take all the other math out of this post and just say, Can I use 1/4 pint jars? The answer is yes.
Everything else is the same. You don't need 1cc per jar, just a drop per hole.
2/1/1 verm/water/brf will stay the same. PC cycles should remain the same (except for the above comment about doing 12PSI. 2Hr-3Hrs is ideal, but you can also do jars in a stock pot so....

Typically, people who PC have one with a PSI gauge/weight. I have no idea if a "cook rice" setting is sufficient for sterilization. And yes, you want a torch lighter. Your needle should be glowing cherry red hot.

1/4 pint jars will work fine. I use that size when I'm doing cakes to make into slurries. I never measure the amount of solution I'm injecting. When you see a little solution run down the inside of the jar stop injecting. 30 minutes in the pressure cooker at 12psi should be plenty to sterilize your jars.

Thanks you, once I get my spores, I think I will sterilize using a big pot, I tried my PC and it isn't made to steam more than like 15minutes.
How many of you do agar instead of injecting with the seringue ? ( ok sorry )

Agar opens up a lot of possibilities. I've just started with it and it's much more simple then it seems. You will need to purchase a proper PC, ingredients and some other supplies to get started though. It might be worth finishing a batch or two of PF tek to make sure this hobby is for you. Eventually, though agar is just better, and if you're sure you want to spend a little money and a lot of time on this hobby, starting with agar is a great idea.
