Which lights to use for cacti?
    #26516492 - 03/04/20 01:14 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So, first off, I live in a cold, rainy climate. I had a San Pedro that I used a weed grow light on in a warm room, but it died.

Wondering if lights work at all or if the cacti needs natural light?

Hoping to switch over to peyote... Same question.

Peace, Love, & all that good stuff :fairy:

With peyote, tube fluorescents can be a pretty workable option because they don't grow tall and so you don't need to worry about lower portions of the plant getting less light. Cheap T8s are fine off the bat, and T5HO is a possibility later to amp up the light intensity. There are other possibilities like LED. In general bluer/cooler light is supposed to result in less stretching.

They can go outside in sunlight when it's warm enough, but you have to be careful about introducing them gradually. Partial shade is a good idea. If you're not careful in acclimatizing, sunburn can severely scar or even kill them. Glare off nearby shiny surfaces can compound the risk.

With San Pedro, the light requirements are higher and it's a lot more of a challenge to try to meet their lighting needs with artificial light beyond the seedling stage. Keeping them relatively cool in the off season keeps them from stretching as much under lower light conditions. Can be hard to avoid pinch points of skinnier growth. Not the most aesthetic plus it's a point of potential breakage.
