Soaked it for 7 days with some Potassium Metabisulfite, then rolling boil but I started with it in the batch instead of adding after. Then waited 20 minuets until it started getting slightly starchy. Drained and layed out on my drying table for 24 hrs. They turned out harder than I expected but you can split one between your finger nails. We will see how it turns out. Think I'm gonna use my RW master on some and see how they do once the master is finished. Definitely a cleaner grain so far. Not as clumpy as Oats can get.

7 days wow.if it’s too starchy a good pointer for popcorn grain is to lay it out flat on a towel to soak up the extra starches. Let it dry off on the towel prior to pcing it.

So today I got some Safflower seeds cause, why not I love to play with grains. I read up kizzle did a run with some.

I'm thinking, rolling boil-dump in the seeds and put the lid back on the PC no weight for 10 minuets. Drain and air dry for 15 minuets and load into jars. Stuff is kinda pricey compared to oats or WBS, but 9.99 for 7lbs

Edit: 40 mins later. Ready for PC cycle, and most of that was waiting for the water to boil.

This might be my new favorite grain. When not considering the price, I love how quickly it is ready for PC.

The plan was to start with a rolling boil and add the grains and let them sit for 10 minuets. But I ended the summer after 5 because I could tell that they were ready as alot of the floaters started to sink. So I drained them for 5 minuets and let them steam on the drying table for another 5 and the outside was dry to the touch, but you could burst the grain with a finger nail gently. They had a nice change in color but also retained most of the oil.

Can't wait to see how they perform. I'm going to drop an agar wedge on one and compare to a LC.

Hmm I haven’t tried those. But lefty did a barley write up recently and it only takes 12 minute prep. Faster than oats. Have you tried oats before sock?

Oats... That's my Jam. I was one of the original oat gangsters. I even tried doing a no soak oat prep somewhere. Measure oats and add water and PC. I never did get the recipe nailed down.

Yes it's actually deer corn and it is much harder to get it to hydrate. Haven't used it, just prepped some bags and decided to wait for the WBS to finish. Am working in a grain prep write up. Someday I will finish it.

That is a massive boner Boomer. Like I don't know if I want the details, but I do want to see someone eat one fresh! Lol

I bought a 10 lb bag of deer corn a while back to try out. As you said, it was far harder than I expected even after a long soak and boil. Actually didn't end up using it drama in the rest that I hadn't prepped got eaten by mice in my garage so I really don't know how it performs. If it works out well for you though, I will definitely be trying it again. I can get it thermistor a lot closer then any other grain except bird seed in for a lot less

I soaked some grain the other day in some water that had sodium metabisulfite. Just for shits and giggles. Im going to see if the added sodium fucks up the grain. Shouldn't be enough to harm anything I think i used 1 tablet(not sure the weight) into 5 gallons.

For potassium metabisulfite it's like 2 Tsp per 5 gallons to kill wild yeast.

So out of the PC the Safflower Seeds look like they have dried a bit. This seed is interesting, I think if used prepped correctly could be a quality grain. I have read I think insanemike used them before, the higher oil content makes the mycelium grow faster.

I will toss a wedge in tonight and start the count down.

Im not using potassium in using the sodium version. Basically its salt. Which is bad for fungus. Thats why I ised so little. Just to see what it does I guess and so I could buy some time on processing the grains. I have tablet form ot is recommended 1 tablet per gal. So 5 tablets for 5 gallons I only used one. Also potassium metabisulfite wont kill wild yeast just so you kmow it pretty much stunts it and keeps it from reproducing so that your pitched yeast can reproduce and fermet. The wild yeast is actually still there and can recover over time. This is why metabisulfite wont clear kill off your pitched yeast after fermentation is over with. If you add more sugar the yeast will go back into suspensionamd continue fermenting.
Its not important just thought I'd mention it. Took me awhile to understand the actual process.

Thanks for the info Gizmo. I guess wine and fermentation information is as mixed up as mushroom cultivation. Cause the package from LD Carlson, leading name in the business literally say Kill Wild Yeast.
