Horrific 100 plus vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 in Wyoming. Video of aftermath. * 2
    #26515374 - 03/03/20 07:55 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

3 confirmed fatalities, others in critical, and dozens injured.

This one hits a little close to home for me because I know this road very well. Too well. I worked on this stretch of road for 2 years. My parents also rolled their SUV and totaled it on this same stretch of interstate and were just fortunate to be alive. My dad lost control on some black ice. Happened when they were coming out there to help me move.

I drove on these icy Wyoming roads for 2 winters (and they are as harsh as they come). Every morning I got up and had to drive for 2 hours there and back, once in the morning and once in the evening. Believe me when I say that I never once took getting home safe for granted.

I also never once lived in a place that took black ice or snow often, but I drove that very same highway twice on my way there and back again to Washington State.

Larramine is gorgeous

In another life I used to manage about two dozen rig drivers stretching between Rock Springs and Casper-- Wyoming has some of the most treacherous winters anywhere on the "civilized" planet-- there's a reason it's so sparsely populated.

My heart goes out to the poor folks in the incident

I loved those roads though,
The snow in the summer,
the deaths in the wind
traversing through this ground
is going to be tragic
even if you get through.

THe reason for my poem above is that the land is held by Sacred Natives.

I lived in Rock Springs. And I made the drive to from there to Casper once. Dude. Talk about white knuckle driving. Jeez. There's stretches of road where there's no guardrails and I swear if you swerved just a little bit your vehicle would tumble hundreds of feet down and your death would be awaiting you at the bottom (well actually you'd probably be dead before you made it to the bottom).

The wind there, too. Gale force winds aren't uncommon. It's savage up there.

Yeah that's nuts. I hate transport trucks, should all be trains IMO.

You only drove there once and you speak of the legend?

Or that one time?

Your story is all mixxed up.

I want to know where you are and where you are going.

I was referring to the trip Coastal spoke of. From Rock Springs to Casper. The stretch of Interstate 80 that this pileup happened was not Rock Springs to Casper. It was Laramie through Rawlings and towards Rock Springs. On Interstate 80.

I only did the Rock Springs to Casper drive once, yes. And I remember being on the very edge of my seat for good stretches on some of that trip.

But yes I knew Interstate 80 (where this pileup was) very well as I lived on 80 for two years and did a ton of driving on it in winter.

I had drivers send me pics of trucks that were blown over just driving down the highways-- these are 80,000lb+ loaded monsters.

Blown. Over. By. The. Wind.

Also frequently stranded by the snow drift/storms that dump feet of snow in places.
You pay extremely close attention to the weather forecast in places like that-- running a logistics operation is a nightmare every winter.

I was within a coin toss of moving to Casper to run a terminal there a few years ago.

I like my Zone 8a better-- but very good people up there.
You included, Niffla

Yep. I saw a few 18 wheelers on their sides during my time there. It is absolutely absurd how fierce those Wyoming winds are.

Ahhh the snow drifts. I was going up there from TX so that was the first time I had ever seen snow drift fences. You'd see them along roads and highways. I had no idea what they were at first. And yeah man I can only imagine who challenging it was coordinating logistics in winter in places as hostile as that.

In conditions like that people need to slow way down. Like 25 mph.

I remember in North Dakota seeing fully loaded tractor trailers blazing down the highways at 70 with the roads covered in 3 inches of solid pack ice-- I've seen it in Colorado too.

But the worst culprits are usually regular drivers that bought an all-wheel drive car and think it's somehow magically immune from physics.

One of the truck drivers who posted one of the videos on YouTube of the aftermath of this said that he slowed way down and put his hazards on. And then saw multiple big rigs go flying past him at very high speeds. Claimed he even got on the radio and advised them to slow way down. But they didn't.

And then you have this as a result. Hopefully he told the police this (I assume that he did).

From the video it looks like the vast majority of the vehicles were transport trucks. Wouldn't want to be one of the poor fuckers in a car.
