I bought a tray of eggs at the local butchers shop priced at £1.99p. I hand over two £1 coins and wait for the penny change. It took a moment for the guy behind the counter to realise that I had my hand out because I was waiting for the change.
...all day long have good luck.
Do you not?

The penny was retired here a few years ago so the smallest denomination you would receive in change is a nickel. But yes I will pick up any denomination of coin, might be something cool.

Well, cashiers just can’t win.
Offer the penny, get a “do I look like a bum” stare. Don’t offer it, get outraged people who expect it.
As if slaving away for Min wage isn't bad enough...

I have a small bank stuffed with pennies. I wonder of there's one worth something in it?

Pre-1922 are like $3 a pop min. If you find one with a mistake, that’s a couple grand. Like a misspelled word, or a wrong number, or even a double-printed line.
I’m sitting on over $100 in silver half-dollars, waiting for their value to jump

I try to pick up pennies on the ground when I see them. My father, who had a pretty solid career and wasn't hurting for money, always did because he said he would never be too proud to pick up money others throw away. And then he'd mention how there's people out there who live day to day and check to check but will throw change away (especially pennies) as if its trash.
So yeah he always picks them up (to this day) and whenever I see him I think of him and do the same thing. I view it as good luck if I pick one up.

I find nickels, dimes, and quarters on occasion. I pick up pennies too. I once saw a guy come out of the store and had change in his hand and was thumbing the pennies out of his palm while walking, lol.

I try to save all my pennies. However, i seem to lose them a lot because of their copper color and small size.
As a kid, i remember cleaning them in a solution. I think it was vinegar and water. It was really nice to see that bright copper finish again

Wwii steel pennies are worth a bit but there were a few copper pennies minted in 1943 as they were left over blanks that are worth a pretty penny.

Seriously they sell for $20,000.
I've been checking all my coins lately to see if they're one of the special dates. Quarters minted between certain years are silver (I want to say <1963) and some or the state quarters like 2004 are misprinted.
I had a vending machine spit a sacagawea dollar at me and it resparked my interest. Sadly for me it was not the rare 2000s Cheerios edition. But still not something you see alot anymore and I keep it with my small collection of foreign currency and Chuck e cheese tokens. And a quarter I shot straight through Washington and turned into a necklace.
Have a 1932 wheat penny I like to pick up and reflect on the value of a penny from the great depression and through the 88 years and all the hands it passed to get to me.
Coins are pretty cool dude.

As an american our currency is so shitty it might as well be equal to the yen. I think we should do away with all change and just round up. It's not like we aren't already universally broke. I've been wearing the same pair of glasses that definitely dont still work for me for like 5 years because its pay rent and be blind or go homeless with my shiny new glasses

You guys use pennies across the pond? I honestly didn't know that.
But yes, to answer your question, I am also cheap.

Wrecked some pretty old coins that way when I was a kid. Nothing that would have been worth too much though.

I know there's a few wheat pennies in my piggy bank. I'll crack it open one day, not now though.

I think even the common ones are worth a bit over the face value.
I used to be active on a penny sorting forum. Still have a sorting machine that can sort a given denomination (out of the 3 smallest ones) by metal content. Basically it's a coin hopper feeding into a coin comparator.
Would like to get back into sorting for silver dimes. Machine sorting for silver doesn't work in the US because the copper clad coins are designed to have the same electromagnetic signature as silver, but in Canada the non-silver ones are nickel or steel so the signatures are completely different. US dimes will be in with the silver but that's not a big deal as there generally are few of them.
