Which ones should I clone and how many?

Pins are popping up in my tubs, expectations are high, and I've been practicing agar transfers. So, looking ahead, it seems like the thing to do would be to grow some clones, right? How many should I do and what are your criteria when choosing ones to clone? Obviously you want nice healthy ones and I've read that clusters are a good choice. But should it be one of the first to mature? Should it be from the first flush or a later one? I'm imagining bringing a few different clones to fruit and then having to sample them all for potency. Trying to imagine being as objective as possible in my journal, making notes and giving ratings while I'm tripping balls.

i look for a good cluster of mushrooms and take the best looking one or two from that cluster.

Is that even a thing? There are so many variables while you cultivate and when you trip. You'd have to do A-B-A-B testing, and that assumes nothing odd happens to potency (or to your brain/soul/karma) between the first "A" and the second "A."
I think you'd have to find a mutant with zero potency to really tell any difference among shrooms that all came from the same spore print and germination point. When I select, I go for fast growth and fruiting. If there's blue bruising at harvest, they're potent enough. And even growing speed suffers from a lot of obfuscating variables in media and growing conditions.

I have no idea if that's a thing, lol. I said it kinda tounge-in-cheek but I did wonder if it's possible or not to produce a clone that's consistently more potent than average. But I guess, like you said, other variables can affect that so much that maybe it wouldn't even be noticeable. I'm green as hell when it comes to this (from the consumption point of view as well as the cultivation end) but I'm really skeptical of the little charts that say one variety has more visuals vs another but that other one excels in some different, measurable way. On the other hand, what if the one I end up cloning is that rare zero-potency mutant you mentioned?? I won't get a decent night's sleep until I see blue bruising.

It’s absolutely possible, and one of the main reasons people clone. The ideal clone ends up growing fast and putting out big yields of potent mushrooms.

Very interesting. Really kinda psyched to see where I can go with this. I wound up here seeing cultivation as a means to an end, stuff for my own personal use but now eating the damn things is really becoming an afterthought.
