Yep i find my subs in areas like that, though usually more dark area with more trees
thing is, i see empty areas like this with no mushrooms more often that i see areas like this with mushrooms
i see areas with subs even less than i see mushrooms

So you gotta hope you are in a suburb with a lot of areas like this. :smile:
or that you just get lucky.

Yeah, unfortunately my area doesn't have many parks like this, and I saw them spraying my most promising park today :frown:. Feel like hunting subs west of Melbourne is like looking for a needle in a haystack

Tips for timing hunts with recent rain?

I was planning on going for a hunt this Friday with the recent rain in my most recent successful spots (10-15mm since last Friday). Will this be enough time for pins to have emerged and open up?

Thanks :laugh:

My tactic is generally just to pick them and not give a shit about what people think of you. Gotta destigmatize the hobby somehow (unless some boneheaded cops are watching of course) :2cents:

Today was cool! Mr Flicker and myself were invited to spend the day on some large heavily forested and privately owned acreage property with the awesome owner.
Towards the western rural side of Victoria, near the Wombat state forest. Within minutes of stepping out of the car we were finding them.
I Have only ever gone sub hunting in western Victoria once before down in Anglesea which was many years ago. It was nice to just spend a day in some different habitat..

Also, it was Mr Flicker's first time hunting out of the suburbs. :rockon:

This patch would've been awesome to see at its prime :sad:;

Photos don't do it justice, some were huge!

Some subs;

Habitat shots;

I went back to the local patch I found recently and picked a few more.

Got some nice spores from them which I'll spray over the mulch in the backyard

I did a little scouting of another area nearby which looks like it should have some mushies in it somewhere, huge expanse of newly planted trees with woodchips all around. It was getting dark so I didn't get a good look but I'll make a point of visiting it again soon.

Twas quite the adventure. Very relaxing to have a casual pick and chill without the worries of the city life. I would highly recommend getting out of the city to pick to all those newbies who havent, as that was even my first time picking bush subs. :heart::tongue2:

Your posts and harvests are incredible - I’ve been learning a lot (as a lurker until now) from the good selection and variety of subs that you share and seem able to find. Keep them coming! :grin: (I reserve you for the next outing haha)

Do you have any tips for how you do it? I went out foraging/exploring today and I realized something really important - it’s not so much the *color* of the mushroom we’re looking for (IMHO), it’s the *shape*, and as long as you hold the shape of that in your mind sometimes you can be looking right at it and it will suddenly jump out at you. It might seem like a small thing, but I initially made the mistake of looking for a colour when I started, and it didn’t get me far. They can blend in surprising well to autumn-colored leaves and brown woodchips. Often I wont see them until I’m almost on top of them.

They are...tricky....little...buggers.

There’s no trick to it..
After some experience hunting in the field. You start better understanding where you should be looking when going through new locations. While also becoming familiar with all the varying colours and shapes. As well as the general smell and feel of them.
There’s no substitute for first hand experience.  :shroompick:

So I went out yet again determined to find some forest subs. Spent 6 hours today in various locations looking around.

Went to Mt. Disappointment, which turned out to be a disappointment.

Went to a pine plantation, nothing there either.

Also followed a creek through the forest, still nothing.

I'm starting to think that this whole thing is a conspiracy that you're all agents to, and that subaeruginosa grow exclusively in the suburbs. Almost seems more likely after spending 50+ hours this season looking in the forest and finding nothing, but finding them everywhere in the suburbs.

I did manage to find a snot monster jelly/fungus thing, three big ones that looked like rusted iron, and a "random dead jellyfish on the beach" fungus.

Lone garden sub;

Looks like another clean cut specimen has been left at the pines spot, birds perhaps?

More from the pine spot;

The blueing on this one was insane;

There was a lot of myc under the pine cone;

This one looked exactly as it did six days ago;

From the way back;

Some long stipes on these ones;

~

Filled all five chambers of the drier for the first time ever. Have these left for tomorrow;
