Hey guys! Recently I've became really interested, almost obsessed with this sub & the subs.

I'm yet to have any luck unfortunately, I live in Melbourne's Western Suburbs, just moved here from Geelong. I made a trip down to the dandies the other day after some rain to no avail unfortunately 😬.

Has anybody had any luck inner west Melb? Don't feel entirely comfortable driving to the east! Also epic photos Nick!

Go anywhere where the council dumps bark, it could be a park, golf course, or anything of that nature.

Look for any mushroom activity whatsoever then when you've found some dial it in to look for subs hehe

safe to say mountains are finished for the season. Must be too cold, been everyweekend for the last 3 months and got some every time. Today was fucking pathetic haha

Hoping the lower altitudes keep the ball rolling for a few more weeks. But I'm giving up on my sacred spots for the year.

I keep thinking the mountains and forests are finished and even the suburbs seem finishing, but then Nickoloxious keeps finding so many so easily so half of me wants to call it a season but the other half wants to go out looking, but pretty sure I'll find nothing...
:resignednonacceptance:

We will have 2-3 days of rain next week... Hoping that will revitalize everything

Really?
I would say that there’s at least another month plus of activity before that even begins to start happening. When a patch stops fruiting you just gotta keep pushing on till you find another one.

There would certainly still be some hiding in the right microclimates around the suburbs. Though the coming rains will definitely help bring up fruits in the more exposed locations.

Thanks for welcoming me! It's raining like crazy today and tommorow. There's a couple parks near me with wood chipped outskirts that I'm going to go suss out.

I just got a little bit worried about not finding any in the west as I haven't seen anybody talk about it online, whilst the east gets all the attention.

I hope i haven't gotten into foraging too late in the season, that would really suck

Hey all,
it's actually my very first post on the forum so just want to say a massive hi to my fellow Victorians

Been immersing myself in what and where to search, cultivation and growing (and started putting together equipment). I think I know what to look for now in my first ever hunt tomorrow, hoping to nab a sub I can take a few spore prints from and get the ball rolling.

If anybody had any cheeky hints about a location near the city (I'm St Kilda East) and wanted to drop them on me I would *really* appreciate it. I just need 1-2 little shrooms to take those prints, otherwise I guess I'll just have to start exploring parklands and such.

I checked the inaturalist directory and there was only 1 location listed in there for the inner city from this year, about a month ago, which I will definitely check out.

Either way I'm treating it as a journey and can't wait for another excuse to get out into nature

Hi Rathilien and welcome to the Shroomery

If you're looking to do traditional cultivation, you should try Cubensis. If you just buy some magic mushrooms from someone you can certainly get mycelium from the dessicated flesh on agar (also good practice for agar -- lots of cleaning up on agar required for this method).

Cultivating Subaeruginosa (the ones you will find in the park or forest) can be tricky and is almost entirely done outside, and you won't get any fruits until next year at the earliest.

That seems a good idea. I've got tons of woodchips in my backyard. Do I just chuck mycelium butts in the soil or?

wow really? I scoured the whole place for 5 hours yesterday, did see one pin! The whole environment just seemed different as well. Are you foraging up on a mountain somewhere too?

I'd like to think that there's more time left in the season... but it seems to have taken a massive unproductive turn over the last couple of weeks.

Then again, looks like you and your dog are still smashing it so what do I know!? Haha

You can put them in with a pile of chips, maybe put a bit of soil on top to form a bit of a layer to keep the inside part damp and safe. I've done that before and gotten a reliable outdoor patch that has fruited for the past 3 years. One thing to note is that they *love* water.

I have managed to get subaeruginosa growing in a little mason jar on just brown mulch from Bunnings at room temp inside, then transfer to a shoebox of a mix of mulches... Then once that controlled growth has spread out a bit I'll transfer it to a bigger outdoor patch to colonise.

but anyway this isn't a cultivation thread so I'll stop here

God damn I hope some day someone comes up with a viable indoor Subaeruginosa tek... would be amazing.

What's with all this talk of the season wrapping up? Its mid June? I've found subs in suburban Melbourne in late August before (albeit rarely). I'm still consistently finding subs in urban areas (some more rain would be nice though)

Learning so much by walking around bush areas that I think are good for mushrooms. Many of the areas I think are right seem too wet, and the areas where shrooms grow, they arent subs. they have a wild variety of quite cool mushrooms, saw one that looked like a tiny ear!

Much more luck with subs in wood chippy/mulchy garden beds in the fancy residential areas. The first flush dried up a week ago but this afternoon i saw a stack of pins i suspect may be subs. keen to keep a watch on them so I can see the sub through the entire grow process.

I've found more blackened dried up mushrooms than you could believe locally and i'm almost certain a lot of them were subs. Wish I had have known what to look for 2 weeks ago but glad for the learnings i have gotten.  Keen to see this season out, and then experience the start of next.

@Biscuits
Good stuff! If your efforts turn up consistently fruitful in the future. You should write up a tek for the layperson cultivator.

@Jagsthebags
Where I forage, the elevation generally ranges from around 100m to 400m above sea level.
Perhaps you’re hunting at much higher altitudes where it gets a little too cold in the middle of winter for the patches to continue fruiting?
If that’s the case I would check back around there when things warm up a little..

In the past I’ve only found bush type subs in mountain areas.hadnt pick in a while and found some by accident bush walking recently, then a couple weeks ago walking my dog in suburban melbourne nth west found a mega patch of urban type subs in the park right next to my house. So excited.they look different to their bush cousins stems fat asf and super dark blue.went back today grabbed some more and there a baby clusters of maybe 20 shrooms in each bunch just magnificent.obviously no one picking here as hundreds of dead black ones in the mulch, and hundreds of pins coming through, incredible season.hope you guys out there have similar luck 272206341 51CCAE39
