Well I can't speak for everyone else, maybe I just have bad luck, but I rarely find many bigger than 5cm in the suburbs... Just makes me want to go out and find some in the forest even more haha ><

Weight by weight I find they’re usually more potent from landscaped wood chip garden beds around the suburbs. I guess the trade off would be the generally smaller size.

Yeah I find most of mine on the sides of road and the edges of the bush at sea level and most common size I find is 2-3cm. I have found about 700grams wet and only around 10 over 5cm!!

That's crazy. My experience has been almost the opposite in the forest areas, finding subs in the public kinda freaked me out

Not sure if this is the most appropriate to ask, decided to put it here because I'm in VIC and maybe different answer elsewhere?
Hunting subs, (local park wood chips, under pine trees) found two monster patches but the shrooms were dried in the ground in one area and in another, wet and falling apart. Like almost rotted.. touch em and the gills fall into your hands.
For wet ones: If stalk is solid but gills fall off, very easily, is it worth picking them or just wait for next rain and get new ones?
For dry ones: Some of them have been partially eaten by small bugs, particularly the stalk, to the point where at all is hollow (but still show silver and blue stem).
Is it Worth drying completely (cap/gills are still a bit soft but the stem 100% dry, grainy particles inside) and storing or should I turf them and just wait to get fresh ones after it rains?
I have a lot for what it's worth so no issue chucking the ones that are most eaten out.
If the shroom dries on its stalk, will it be psycho-active?
For future expeditions:
Is it recommended to pick them when they are dark brown underneath or ok when still caramel?
What about picking when the gills haven't extended fully?
I have some now that are dry, i dont think theyll open further but the gills didn't open fully. Not sure if worth keeping
TThanks in advance for any responses

For the wet ones. If they fall apart easily then they’re no good. It’s probably best to wait till more to fruit later on.
For the dry ones. It’s fine if they’re eaten by bugs. Just make sure none smell bad, are rotting or have any hidden decay.
Absolutely dry them all 100% if you intend to store them long term.
Dry or fresh & at any stage of growth the whole mushroom would be active.
In regards to picking them. If you want to sustain your local fruiting numbers and populations. The longer you leave them before picking, the better. Just don’t wait too long so that they start to go bad.
If they are already picked you might as well keep them?

Thanks a lot. I'm filtering through what I picked up and discarding the ones that fall to pieces. I think I'll bury them in my front yard wood chips and maybe grow my own subs later?
It was a massive patch, each mushroom 20c to 50c piece in size, over 50 of them across a 2 metre by 1 metre strip. I took the more solid ones but left easily 75% of the mushrooms in the ground because I wasn't sure if it was worth grabbing them - and i dont have a food dehydrator so didnt want to "Waste" them.
Looking forward to seeing what happens next time it rains, and seeing the growth cycle from start to end!

I’d love to get some of the monsters you seem to find in forested areas nickoloxious, I do fine in the burbs but every forest trip I end up with donuts, although I enjoy being out in the nature would be a bonus if I had a successful hunt out in the forests

A quick trip to the forest today was surprisingly rewarding, wasn't there for long either and wasn't expecting much, somehow that tends to make a difference in finding more of them. I think I get tunnel vision when I'm looking for them like a madman rushing through the bushes. The hunt teaches me a lot of lessons and really primes the experience of the trip it self when eating the mushroom later on.
Some photos of today's findings:

Some other species I found which intrigued me, especially the very sub look a like.

Lol I know exactly what you mean! I feel like the dude from Jurassic park when I'm in the forest...

A keen eye for a sub or two hiding amongst the bushes. I had given up on this season due to the recent conditions and early start to the season. You've inspired me to give it another crack on the weekend. Cheers

Went looking around a pine plantation in Gippsland last night but had no luck, just hundreds of look-alikes. I'd never seen that many mushrooms located in one area, if only they were active!
Hoping to go out to the Otways over the weekend, anyone had much luck?

@jagsthebags
Glad it did, good luck on the hunt! ✌️ It's a good idea to go to new areas places and just enjoy the natural energy, any finds are just a bonus in my eyes 😁
@reckless293
Pine areas seem to be my favourite so far, even if I don't find anything I love being in that environment. So many different types of mushrooms
I think I got lucky this late in the season finding subs but maybe a veteran can shed some light on when the season actually fully dries up around Vic , or if it ever does in some environments?
Good luck at the otways! 🙏
@Nickoloxious
Thank you, it took some time but eventually it did pay off. Gotta say, a lot of my efforts to find more subs was because of the amazing photos you keep posting! 😁 Also would like to know your opinion regarding the season ending time I mentioned earlier. Thank you
I went past a suburban park to check how some pins I left last week were doing and managed to pick a few ripe ones, and also found some new babies growing still! In a few different spots too.
Here are some of pics:

*Note the very cream/white colour the caps are, haven't seen it before on a sub. Maybe it's because it's in a very shaded area but I've found other subs in similar habitata without that sort of colouration. Maybe it isn't a sub?
