Cultivation hangout thread. * 2
    #26511642 - 03/01/20 04:01 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So we are all just hanging out waiting on jars or agar. In currently waiting on jars to cool in the PC. Thought I would make a thread were people can hang out and add pictures of their cultivation or methods. Or just what ever is going on in their world. We have a few threads going, but I feel like we need a new one to bump with useless information and cool pictures. Anything goes as long as it follows cultivation guidelines.

So to make sure this doesn't get moved to the Pub I will post a closet picture.

Moved all my main spawn jars out of the pantry because our second fridge just wasn't enough space anymore and it was making life difficult.  Consolidated everything else and stuffed it in the fridge I had pts and qts stuffed in: current agar projects, experiments/ test jars and jars I made to clean odds and ends of wild rice and popcurn out of my pantry while I went stir crazy crutching around my house waiting for my foot to heal so I can dig out of my friggin drive/walk in general.  Going bonkers  Also have like seven jars in here of brf/sdust/verm spawn for a ps cyan experiment.  Can't wait to get the upstairs finished so I can have a nook instead of three different places.  Waiting for a half dozen shoeboxes to dinish so I can shut most cubes down and focus on new projects (edibles).

Food only beause I went apeshit on food stocks last year.  Just found a feed & seed nearby I didn't know existed with those $12 50#s, so this may change...  I'm jealous of your closet.  Combines my want for two things I really enjoy: mush cult and isolation! :highfive1:  Still negotiating for half the upstairs storage room but I have a feeling I'm going to get my closet wish... under the stairs :tryingnottodie: ...

I made a "sterile" tent in my leaky ass outdoor 900 sqft shop. Tore it down this fall cause it didn't work. I found that a smaller space where I can run my FH for 30 minuets prior to work is much cleaner that a "clean room"

Haven't figured out fruiting cause I'm just returning to this hobby... Gonnachew on that issue soon

Yeah that is a great space size for scrubbing.  We have an unfinished house that is all studs and insulation in the interior and the staircase/hallyway framing is open so there's air exchange from the front door to the backdoor.  Stick a woodstove dead center and by golly you're getting some air currents moving all the time.  Maybe isolate a good vertical space/tall shelf and fruit in the shop?  Sucks fruiting in mixed use space...

One of those is not real:computertrip:

I think I’m gonna try my first outdoor patch soon. My whole block is concrete, with about a dozen 4-sq-ft squares of soil with a tree in the middle. Well, last weekend, the neighbors threw down a pretty deep layer of red wood chips into each “square” to beautify the street, I’m guessing.
Picked up a handful omw to work today. Gonna get them colonized and toss them back in🤷🏻‍♂️ I’d dump my spent subs there, but it’s a pretty busy block of a really busy city so it’s never empty. I’m gonna have to ninja-inoculate dem patches.

That's awesome. Imagine how many people will walk down the street and be like.... YO! CUBES! TThere are more of us out there than I think we assume sometimes.

It would be cool if you had a little outdoor area you could make some potted plants and fertilize it with spent sub.

Yes it's actually deer corn and it is much harder to get it to hydrate. Haven't used it, just prepped some bags and decided to wait for the WBS to finish. Am working in a grain prep write up. Someday I will finish it.

Soaked it for 7 days with some Potassium Metabisulfite, then rolling boil but I started with it in the batch instead of adding after. Then waited 20 minuets until it started getting slightly starchy. Drained and layed out on my drying table for 24 hrs. They turned out harder than I expected but you can split one between your finger nails. We will see how it turns out. Think I'm gonna use my RW master on some and see how they do once the master is finished. Definitely a cleaner grain so far. Not as clumpy as Oats can get.

7 days wow.if it’s too starchy a good pointer for popcorn grain is to lay it out flat on a towel to soak up the extra starches. Let it dry off on the towel prior to pcing it.

So today I got some Safflower seeds cause, why not I love to play with grains. I read up kizzle did a run with some.

I'm thinking, rolling boil-dump in the seeds and put the lid back on the PC no weight for 10 minuets. Drain and air dry for 15 minuets and load into jars. Stuff is kinda pricey compared to oats or WBS, but 9.99 for 7lbs

Edit: 40 mins later. Ready for PC cycle, and most of that was waiting for the water to boil.

This might be my new favorite grain. When not considering the price, I love how quickly it is ready for PC.

The plan was to start with a rolling boil and add the grains and let them sit for 10 minuets. But I ended the summer after 5 because I could tell that they were ready as alot of the floaters started to sink. So I drained them for 5 minuets and let them steam on the drying table for another 5 and the outside was dry to the touch, but you could burst the grain with a finger nail gently. They had a nice change in color but also retained most of the oil.

Can't wait to see how they perform. I'm going to drop an agar wedge on one and compare to a LC.

Hmm I haven’t tried those. But lefty did a barley write up recently and it only takes 12 minute prep. Faster than oats. Have you tried oats before sock?

Oats... That's my Jam. I was one of the original oat gangsters. I even tried doing a no soak oat prep somewhere. Measure oats and add water and PC. I never did get the recipe nailed down.

I bought a 10 lb bag of deer corn a while back to try out. As you said, it was far harder than I expected even after a long soak and boil. Actually didn't end up using it drama in the rest that I hadn't prepped got eaten by mice in my garage so I really don't know how it performs. If it works out well for you though, I will definitely be trying it again. I can get it thermistor a lot closer then any other grain except bird seed in for a lot less

I soaked some grain the other day in some water that had sodium metabisulfite. Just for shits and giggles. Im going to see if the added sodium fucks up the grain. Shouldn't be enough to harm anything I think i used 1 tablet(not sure the weight) into 5 gallons.

For potassium metabisulfite it's like 2 Tsp per 5 gallons to kill wild yeast.

Actually, please allow me to introduce myself... A few months back i started with cultivation after about 3 years (i was doing BRF cakes from spores in SGFC then). I learned more over those last months than i learned while i was going to school...
I wanted to sincerely thank all those who share their valuable knowledge with the internet. I hope i get to know some of you, i already recognize some names... :naughty:

Anyway, here is a picture of my fungus den:

So out of the PC the Safflower Seeds look like they have dried a bit. This seed is interesting, I think if used prepped correctly could be a quality grain. I have read I think insanemike used them before, the higher oil content makes the mycelium grow faster.

I will toss a wedge in tonight and start the count down.

Im not using potassium in using the sodium version. Basically its salt. Which is bad for fungus. Thats why I ised so little. Just to see what it does I guess and so I could buy some time on processing the grains. I have tablet form ot is recommended 1 tablet per gal. So 5 tablets for 5 gallons I only used one. Also potassium metabisulfite wont kill wild yeast just so you kmow it pretty much stunts it and keeps it from reproducing so that your pitched yeast can reproduce and fermet. The wild yeast is actually still there and can recover over time. This is why metabisulfite wont clear kill off your pitched yeast after fermentation is over with. If you add more sugar the yeast will go back into suspensionamd continue fermenting.
Its not important just thought I'd mention it. Took me awhile to understand the actual process.

Thanks for the info Gizmo. I guess wine and fermentation information is as mixed up as mushroom cultivation. Cause the package from LD Carlson, leading name in the business literally say Kill Wild Yeast.

I am thinking about agar and my WBS shoeboxes. Then it occurred to me ,
How do you set up notifications on threads? I have no way of knowing if I get replies on a post unless I go back to the thread I posted on..  what’s up with that?

A quick way to check new comments is the thread link under your user name. If you click account link, there is an option for receiving email notification.

Lmao yea I think maybe its a common misconception that it kills the yeasts. I guess if you used enough of it probably would but once you put sulfites in there they're in there they arent part of what gases off so you dont want to be using enough to actually kill off yeasts lmao. It is to my understanding though that potassium metabisulfite doesnt actually kill yeast. I dont know a whole lot about brewing but it is one of my favorite hobbies.

I definitely dont miss that avatar I had it since 2011. I was never as happy as the day I changed it lmao.  Wont be long before im tired of this one though.

Hey, has anyone here ever cultivated P. Serbica? I have some dry fruits and thinking about trying to get some spores cleaned up on agar...

I could not find one single post documenting the cultivation of this species. Why is that? I mean, look how beautiful they are!

I have not done this, but have read that your best bet is to take a piece of the dried gills to agar in the hope that some spores will be stuck to it and germ. I've heard some say to crush the tissues so it is kinda powder and smear it with a loop like you would spores, others have said to just take a tiny piece and lay it on agar. Read of mixed results in any case but I see no reason not to give it a shot.

Hmmm, how about crushing a few gills, then adding like 1ml of water, then looping it to agar? :confused2:

Seems like crushing the cap and spreading it on a plate would work.

You can clone dried tissue why not do that?

Fuck it. I'm in the middle of a mass restart anyway. CRS seems to be the only one that I don't have a good print, old MSS, or old agar plate of. I'll dig through my duffle bag and find some dried CRS fruits and give it a shot as well.

Lol that’s the spirit!

When I first started reading stuff here I would occasionally see somebody mention they had just thrown out a few pounds of shrooms and that shit was shocking.

But now that I’m deeper in it i can see it happening. I mean I don’t think I could bring myself to do it quite yet but I’m definitely running out of room. I bought a case of half gallon jars thinking I’d only need a couple. 1/3 way through lagm and they’re all stuffed.

The cult will get you.

For a timely egress, I try to keep all my dried fruits in a duffle bag. But yeah, at some point I'm gonna need to unload or get another bag.
Way down in the bottom is a bag of some of my first fruits mixed together. luckily I know the CRS in there blow their spore load before harvest so I know both which are CRS and that there are plenty of spores in the tissue. I'll try scraping some off, crushing some gills, and also try a piece of the inner stipe just for funsies and see what happens.

Have you tried cloning dried tissue before?

I don’t remember exactly how it’s done but I think they soak it for a while then drop it to a plate.
And the soak might’ve been in a mild bleach solution, like 5-10%.

I have not. I've seen it discussed a few times here but would have to do a search to find out the process. Really glad this topic came up actually. CRS was one of my favorite and my first. Those guys would punch you in the back of the face. But a series of bad decisions and mistakes left me with no good way to bring them back. I gave away almost all my prints and only had some VERY contamed plates to work with. This is probably my best bet at bringing them back.

So I'm gonna play tonight. Oyster blender style. EAT get credit. He finally made a Tek around it while I was away. Original idea was to blend cakes.

Anyway, instead of water or some liquid innoculant I did agar super runny and plan on nocking up the jars with a clean wedge. Let it grow out a few days and blend that SOB. Should have clean runny agar slurry.

I probably shouldn't drink so much.

Hey y'all, so nice to meet all you good folks and read all your great ideas and happy ramblings. I am new to this awesome forum and also in the aggravating "patience" phase of my first grow in 25 years. Hoping I can still make the magic. A month into my 1st and 2nd gen 5 qt jars of oats aspawning, and my 1st bulk tub running mycelium in horse poo. Going strong too! Hope to be fruiting soon! Tried to upload some pics to this post but having trouble..sorry.

Thank you Randalf, nice to meet you! I'm still trying to figure out my way around this forum and how to post pictures, hopefully I will get it down soon. It amazes me all the good people who are on here offering up help for fellow freshmen mycologists. But it also amazes me that alot of the noobs can figure all this stuff on the forum out and post many pics (I having trouble with) but can't grow fungus lol. Maybe I'm  just an old soul.😁

After a few months of starting up my first ever agar work, cloning from growbox and a ton of transfers, I've been prepping and inoculating grain jars for the past few weekends.

Tomorrow its finally time to start expanding to substrate and start fruiting (hopefully haha). Planning to make a ton of shoeboxes tomorrow, super excited!

A few pictures of my trials:

Thanks! Its been eating up quite a bit of my time indeed. Wanted to do things properly my 2nd time around cultivation (did some PF and spores>grain>monotub in a distant past).

Cant wait also to finally access the marketplace here, its been 10 years coming haha, almost... Would love to grow different varieties and species in the time to come

Finished last of the 80 plates I poured. 50 more cooling in SAB. 500ml of low nute agar and 500ml extra soft sagari (1.7g agar). 3 ea plates on top except gt; ran out. I have a full list coming tonight in my journal, and link to that log (Genesis II: Electric Boogaloo). If it's not there, check back later. This is a massive restart for me, and it grew while I was doing it so this is going to be a challenge to keep up with but I'm going to give it the ol college try.

Thank you so much Sockadin, nice to meet you! Looks like you got the major project lab going on there. I am currently remodeling the back room at my house to do the very same. Had a bad mold problem so I decided to bleach everything, walls and ceiling and repaint with killz mold kill paint to be on the safe side. My gf thinks I go a bit overkill on sanitizing things, but we know it pays off in the long run. I guess I am a bit of a germaphobe anyway. But hey, no such thing as too clean! It's like too much money or too powerful wicked shrooms lol, no such thing right?. Anyway great to meet you! Will keep y'all posted on my progress, and can't wait to see your fruits!

Appreciate that but trust me, you get no shame from me. Just kinda throwing everything I have at it and seeing what sticks. I know some of my prints\mss are filthy, I suspect others are less than clean, and I hope that at least a few make this easy on me. If I haven't abandoned all of these in 6 or 7 weeks, then I'll give myself some credit. Haha. Right now, I'm just a guy with a lot of petri dishes and time on my hands.

Tomorrow its finally time to start expanding to substrate and start fruiting (hopefully haha). Planning to make a ton of shoeboxes tomorrow, super excited!

A few pictures of my trials:

Update: Made the boxes today! Just make a bunch and by chance at least a few will fruit right?

I really need to make some transfers after work. Like iv had the plates poured for 3 days now and im just getting really discouraged because many of my last grows turned green. But I'm working my way through the process to figure out the issue and how to solve it.

Has anyone tried Josex Biopsy method for transferring to agar?

My scalpel sucks balls, it doesn't fit the blade so I have to tape it until proper size scalpel arrives to do transfers with agar.

However, anyone have any luck doing myc transfers from agar to blank agar? Do you think it takes too long? Looking for a way to transfer from agar to agar without a scalpel.

Have you guys tried the poke method??

I am PC'ing some agar as we speak  BRF agar

I've used my tweezers in the past to cut through the agar. Wasn't a fan though. I know this seems obvious and I mean no offense by it but what about an Xacto knife or better scalpel?

Could try using a loop to scrape up some myc and transfer.

I am waiting for scalpel in the mail. Should be here tomorrow or wednesday.

I haven't used a loop yet. I can make one from a christmas ornament, but not sure about the handle.

Can you use sterilized swabs to xfer agar to agar??

I use an exacto knife. Craft store 7.99.plus they have an assortment of blades for them. Transfers I like the wood chisel tip cause you can cut and then slide it under your agar piece

Interesting! Thanks for the ideas guys!

I am PC'ing my agar in a 1 quart mason jar. I like to add more water so it cools down slower due to the thermal mass, to prevent boil over.
I usually use a whiskey bottle, but this time I have water about 2/3 to the top of the jar. Did I add too much water? Will it sterilize properly if there is that much water in the PC??

Is your PC running at 15Psi? Did you vent it for at least 5 minuets before adding the weight?

Yes. I have it going now at 16 PSI. I steam vented for about 15 minutes before adding the weight. I am gunna run it for 35 minutes, since the BRF has sediment

I think it should be okay too. I was just wondering if 2/3 of the jar is under water that it will sterilize properly

I prep my PC with about 2 inches max. I know Bod says to fill it to the level of agar, but if we are steam sterilizing it just seems like it would take longer to get the PC up to pressure. I don't have any experience with it because I have never done it. He might be on to something.

I think either home Depot or a store called Menards had handles with blades for like a dollar or 2. I actually prefer exacto over a scalpel. I keep it gutter though.

BOD is right as it did take longer to get to 15 PSI, took about 10 minutes after the venting to reach 15 PSI, not much of a difference in wait time but there is a difference and it is slower but doable

I am very grateful for them Gizmo. Thank you again.

I had swab them to agar plates. I took a transfer and put onto another agar plate. I am waiting for those to finish up!! It was interesting that the spore print was a rusty color!! I just poured 20 plates. I was careful with the agar master swab plate so I can continue from it. The Rusty's are what I am working on now! Hopefully my xfers were clean and awesome so I can put to grains.

I read somewhere about people making test or control plates.
What does this mean exactly? Do they just leave a blank agar dish to see if it contams on its own, or do I touch it with bare hands to see if it contams? That way I can ensure my agar plates are clean

Ha, I'm saving some plates just to do that shit with. Though, it will be no surprise that most things have things on them.
Without being able to tell what specific bacteria I recovered, it's all just gross looking slimy and fuzzy bits that essentially mean nothing at all. I already know that even though I ISO my phone more than most people, it's still covered is bacteria and such. You want to be shocked, don't swab your phone or you tongue or your hands, swab some lettuce or an apple.

Oh hell yeah. When I do lab work I have music playing on my computer but use my phone to control it. I try not to do so, but started because I would change a song or volume, or take a picture, then re-glove and re-iso so I just started doing my phone as well. Can also be helpful for cleaning out charging ports. Helps to loosen all the crud without damaging contacts. Also use 90% for cleaning mirror bed on my printer.

Like three hours later I'm still dicking around instead of harvesting and cloning and transferring....
I need coffee and drugs

These seeds? TSC has a bunch of bird lovers in my area. They are Black Oil Sunflower Seeds. I love the contrast, I don't think they have as much nutrients as Oats or Wheat because the mycelium acts super Rhizo, but it looks cool.

Is it moving really fast? Might be perfect for making master jars. Have them finish super fast then g2g them.

So does that mean that myc goes rhizomorphic when it's searching for more nutrients?

The theory that is running around is that Rhizo growth happens more on low nutrient plates. I really don't know the answer to that. But if that is true BOSS has less nutrients than oats and more oil.

I’ve 100% noticed way more rhizo on really low nute plates. Also thinly poured ones for some reason.

Here’s some fat melmak pins. All of a sudden its sucking up tons of water, I’ll check every few hours and the beads are gone.
