Need help on my DIY flowhood (filter/blower sizing)
    #26511477 - 03/01/20 02:13 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

So i have been reading some teks and watching videos about making a flow hood. I feel like im 90% understanding Inches of water gauge and matching it with CFM. For example this motor the Dayton 1TDT8 has CFM ratings at HI/LOW settings depending on WG pressure. This I understand.
https://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-OEM-Blower-1TDT8
CFM @ 0.000-In. SP797/549
CFM @ 0.100-In. SP780/546
CFM @ 0.200-In. SP730/536
CFM @ 0.300-In. SP720/532
CFM @ 0.400-In. SP680/518
CFM @ 0.500-In. SP640/504
CFM @ 0.600-In. SP620/490
CFM @ 0.700-In. SP560/474
CFM @ 0.800-In. SP500/392

What I am having a harder time understanding is figuring if my output CFM will be sufficient depending on the filter. When I go to a filter sales website this is what I see when looking at the graph of the filter

So is it saying that I have 1.0"wg pressure drop? Im sure the motor should be good but I just wanted to be sure. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

If the filter is 2ftx2ft the area is 4sqft. If you want 100scfm on the output than you must find a blower
that will supply 400scfm with the resistance at 1.0in. That number should be on the blower specifications.
Some of the blowers at w.w. granger have the higher resistances in the second column.

Ok well it appears that this motor is headed towards the number 400cfm as it approaches 1.0"wg on the high setting. The motor part I get. Its the filter part that Im having difficulty.

The only other information about the filter is located in this pdf file from the manufacturers website: https://www.aafintl.com/en/commercial/browse-products/commercial/hepa-ulpa-filters/astrocel-i

It states this...
5 7/8 inches deep- 125FPM @ 1.0"wg
11 1/2 inches deep- 250 FPM @ 1.0"wg

So it seems like I want the 5 7/8" deep hepa filter. But I dont know Im having a hard time figuring how my motor will respond to the size filter I choose.

The 5 7/8 has a maximum flow 125 scfm when supplied with air at 1.0"WG . With the 11 1/2 you could
pass a maximum of 250 cfm. Since you don't need that much air flow the 5 7/8 is probably the one
that you want. If the blower will supply 400scfm at 1.0"WG it will supply 100 scfm to each square foot of the filter.

The blower should have a curve chart as well saying what cfm it can deliver under various amounts of resistance. You want one to match your filter, too much flow will likely be too turbulent and too little won’t require the desired cfm for laminar flow

now that i get it better I think I know what i will go with. all you have to do is know the square footage of your filter and then see what the pressure drop is of that filter. Finally see what the motor runs at that pressure drop and then see what the cfm is. Divide the area of filter into the CFM the fan is going to be running at and if that number is around 100 then it is a match. Also have to take into account prefilter which is about .3"wg
Seems like the Dayton 1TDT8 is a good choice.

I am glad it makes more sense to you.
