Dremels/hacksaws/boltcutters were a big aha moment for me. Always thought you needed more special tools to cut metal but nope. Cutting stripped nuts off with a dremel is a lifesaver

Here's a cool electric one for pulling wire through conduit/pipe: You tape a small plastic bag to a long piece of string and put the bag into the end of the conduit so that it blocks airflow in the conduit/lets the vacuum get suction on it. Then you take a shop-vac and put the vacuum hose into the other end of the conduit and suck the bag/string through, leaving plenty of string on the original end of course. Then you just tie/tape all your wires to that string, soap it up so it slides easier and pull the wires back through the conduit with the other end of the string.

Hopefully that makes sense. Was installing some electric stuff last week and thought that was the coolest trick. Otherwise I have no idea how you'd pull 4 bulky wires through a long underground pipe with bends in it. One step closer to getting a proper shower installed. Its been fun learning how to do basic electrical/plumbing; I always perceived them to be complicated things but its really not, at least at basic household level

A few that come to mind:

- Save worn out toothbrushes for cleaning stuff - e.g. dirty boots
- If a pen won't write, trying putting the tip under a hot tap for a second or two.
- Don't say anything to police/cops. Not being anti-cop, but there is very little advantage and whole lot of disadvantage.

If your refrigerator is not cooling very well clean the coils underneath. It is easy with a long brush and a vacuum and your fridge will work like new.

When pulling nails out of drywall use a wide spatula or similar item to spread the pressure from the hammer and prevent a hole in the drywall. Also works well for prying off trim without damaging the wall

If you break the head off a nail that you are trying to pull out use a pair of vice grips to clamp on and then use the rounded part of the grips like a lever to pull the nail out

Going to try to keep adding tips like this if you guys think they are helpfil

Coping is an essential part of installing baseboard molding. If you do two 45 degree angles the tendency is for them to separate over time, especially during dry winter. Instead you pick the longest section that is first seen when you walk into a room, install a piece with flat ends and then cope the pieces that abutt to it so they fit over the molding. This is how I do it

1. Cut at 45 degrees across the face of your molding

2. This gives an outline of the molding

3.clamp it on a workbench

4. Use a coping saw to cut along the edge

5. Finish up with a sharp utility knife, a file or rasp can also be used

Once done the piece will now fit over another piece of the same molding perfectly.

(Straight piece on left and coped piece on right)

Here's one for ya...

If you need to cut a screw/bolt to a shorter length without messing up the threads:
  • Thread two nuts onto your screw/bolt, leaving the outside nut exactly where you want the new length to be.
  • Use two wrenches to to tighten the two nuts into each other (get them real tight so the bolt won't spin when you start cutting).
  • Throw the bolt into your vise.
  • Using a dremel or a hacksaw, use the nut as a guide to cut the bolt to length.
  • When done cutting, unthread the two nuts which will clean up any issues with the threading.
  • :fingerpistol:

Another life hack:
Stop eating gyros from Arby's and go to a food truck or family owned restaurant instead, if completed properly you will earn respect and have a way danker gyro.

When you have an open tube of caulking you want to keep, stick a screw in the end and then apply some tape over(not seen in picture) the opening and screw, to try to reduce air exposure. When you need it again, you can take the tape off and pull-out the screw which should bring with it the dried up bits of caulking at the end, which would otherwise plug up the opening. Works for me, but some types of caulking just like hardening up, even if not opened, no matter what you do, so as a bonus tip: check the expiry dates of caulking you are buying.

Another method for cleaning out stubborn gunk from your files, other than using a file brush, is the piece of copper technique.

Cut open a piece of copper pipe/tube and flatten it out, then run the edge along the file, in the direction of the grain of the file. The file will quickly cut grooves into the soft copper making teeth which reach down into the grooves of the file dislodging the embedded dirt/material.

The process can be better seen in the video below:

Speaking of plumbing, its a good idea to check and clean the P-traps of your kitchen and bathroom sinks as preventive maintenance about 1-2 times a year (depending on usage). The  inside of the pipe often gets covered with gunk and by checking and cleaning them say, 1-2 times a year, you can prevent a clogged P-trap from occurring.

Nice one! I just got a wood burning stove for the house too. Will be looking into this most likely while on drugs.

Here's one I saw in another post LC had and just got to try out...

When creating holes in your monotubs heat up a small (clean/empty) tin can on the stove. Once hot press and twist the can onto the tub where the hole is to be located. The plastic melts cleanly within seconds.

P. S. Don't use glass it will break
P. S. S. There will be fumes act accordingly

If you want to hang an adhesive hook, especially in an apartment, without it falling down after some time, use silicone caulk instead of the foam backed adhesive the hook comes with. Start with a metal hook. Image search for "adhesive hook metal" if you don't know what I mean. Scrape the backing off, and remove the rest with alcohol. Flame it until bronze to get it microscopically clean. Wipe the wall off with alcohol--use this for tiles, not a painted wall. Apply caulk thickly to the back of the hook, then attach it without pressing too hard. You want the layer to be thick so it can be removed some day. Wait 24 hours to hang anything, but wait a week before hanging anything ridiculously heavy. I hang cast iron pans this way.

To remove: cut the backing with a razor blade, or saw it off with a piece of string or floss. Use a razor blade to scrape the caulk residue from the wall. Don't use water-based caulk because it won't cure, and don't use some exotic kind since it may be harder to remove some day.

I like to wrap leafy greens in an old shirt or put them in a canvas bag. It helps. I haven't tried putting them in plastic after that!

I found that this more prevents swamp smelling kitchen sinks. For bathroom lavs the mechanical pop-up (the plug thingy) is usually a magnet for hair and sludge. For any foul smells check the overflow, they're often an absolute science experiment.

A good way to keep drains draining is to 'force' a high volume of water down the drain. Basically dump a bucket of water IN the drain or pull the plug when full.

On another note. Drain cleaning chemicals will only work if they can get to the blockage.. if your drain isn't moving at all (kitchen sinks full since yesterday) dumping caustic chemicals into the mix will do nothing but annoy who ever it is who will ultimately be clearing the line with expensive tools which usually means an additional 'fee'

Plumb on!

I recently replaced the driver side mirror on my car recently and when i was attaching the new one, i made the mistake of overtightening one of the bolts and i broke one of the 3 mounting bolts. I was using a battery-powered ratchet, which i love using.

So when using a battery-powered ratchet, do not overtighten bolts! Once they tighten up, leave them be to avoid damage to the bolt.

If you bought an article of clothing that has cig smoke smell in it, Ive found one of the best ways to get rid of the smell is to do a hot water wash in a washing machine with 2x the amount of soap typically used. It may take a couple washes, but the smell will eventually come out.

Use a golf tee to fill a screw hole, like when rehanging a door or replacing the strike plates when replacing a knob/lock.

gently hammer the golf tee in and snap off level with the wood, careful not to break the tee before it gets depth.

Set a reminder on the first of the month to change your filters for furnace, eventually it will become habitual.

If you cant find your stud finder, you can use a magnet to find drywall screws/nails to find the studs.  Always look for outlets, and be mindful of where electrical wiring may be.

I can even see that being very helpful if you need to take down some dry wall.

Glad to be of help.  I'll try and remember them as I use them with these remodels and post them up in here.

Another, if you're redoing landscape, pool or new construction most municipalities will bill your sewage off of the amount of water usage. In many you can add a second water meter that only goes to landscape, pool and the like and not have to pay waste/sewage on that meter.

I have been doing alot of work on my second "first" home...
It's a fixer upper I bought just as the market was fueling up, so I've dumped alot of sweat and dollhairs into this thing over the past year...
So with saving dollars in mind, I bring you my newest learned hack for PAINTING!

So, ya get your rollers right and you may have one of the steel/tin paint pans of the days of old, or you maybe have a cheep plastic one that you just bought.
Well these things get covered in paint which dries and creates layers or can chip off or whatever when you go to another room to another color.
well HERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS! Never buy those liners for your old metal ones and never buy more than one plastic one (every now and again they break and need a new one)..

I have it figured out.
Line the fucking trays with grocery bags that we all have lying around our homes.
They slip on the deep side perfect, the plastic nestles into the tray, creating a perfect thin and 3asy to remove layer, and the handles fit right around the front legs to keep it much more secure than one would think!

Fuck the man, line your paint trays with grocery bags and paint all the colors of the rainbow!

Thats a great one! :yesnod:

Recently, the collar thingy for my wristwatch resin band broke, so i put a small strip of Velcro between the adjustable band and the main watch band. Worked for awhile but one of the sides fell off (from washing my hands). Now i have a piece of black electrical tape on the main band and i made a "pocket" to slip the adjustable band into. Its working pretty well

For sharp lines on rough surface you can lay down blue tape. Then apply a super thin layer of waterbased caulk and immediately paint over and pull the tape wet. Came from the Idaho Painter dude on YouTube.

For freehand the same youtube guy likes a 2gal bucket with a 1gal paint grid. Carry a 3 or 4" roller and a brush. Cut in with the brush and then get the roller as close as possible.

I hotglued a magnet on the inside of the bucket to hold the brush. Roller handle hooks on the grid.

If youre painting the ceiling and walls with a rough texture i will sometimes hit the corner with a thin bead of caulk. Gives a smooth area for the wall cut in.

If you have an older house with copper pipes look into installing water hammer arrestors on the washing machine and toilets and dishwasher. Even a kids bathroom sink if they like to slam the faucet handle closed quickly. Ive trained myself to turn the shower and sink off slowly.

Also some older houses have a vertical copper pipe in the wall. Its capped off and is designed to trap air and reduce water hammer. Over time the trapped air dissolves into the water. Every year or so youre supposed to drain the pipes and then refill to retrap the air. I have no clue what states used that technique. Older plumber guy taught me about it.

Expansion tank on a water heater is also a good idea. Totally DIY worthy if comfortable with basic plumbing.

While on plumbing dont forget to poke the rim clean holes of your toilet. Depending on design. Some have lots of holes that easily clog with mineral deposits.

:ducklol:

HOW TO ENGAGE THE SERVICES OF A PLUMBER

-Call the plumber after lunch on friday or before a public holiday weekend.

-Hassle him to fit you in.

-Estimate the time and ease of job. (They like that) explain that it is a five minute job that you could do yourself if “only you had the time.”

-Negotiate the smallest most inconvenient window of booking opportunity. (I have to go to the gym or some other more important engagement than your blocked shitter, will smooth this over.

-Ask for a fixed price. (Even of its a burst pipe or blocked drain) When the plumber refuses to be nailed down, some jovial comment like “I should have been a plumber”will keep the negotiation nice and light.

-Tell him that you will run it by your wife and call back in five.

-Call ten other plumbers and then phone back. If he answers the phone again and arrives be sure to be in the shower or on the way home.

-Show him the job which does not vaguely resemble what you described.

-Ask him to move his truck. Someone needs to get their car out and it clearly cant wait the “five minutes”.

-Show him where the problem is. Explain how you cant find the key to the side gate and he will have to lug his equipment around.

-Now is probably a good time to point out that the problem appeared on Monday.

-Embark on a long winded story involving names of people he could not give a toss about, and every completely unrelated event leading to this moment in time.

-Share your half cocked theory on what is going on. (“Air in the pipes” perhaps?)

-Apologize for the 20 years of piss-cheese build up on around your toilet where he will be working. Explain how it is someone else’s fault. It will make it more palatable.

-Tell them one of your close relatives was a plumber. (He will be extremely interested and it will create a sense of kinship between you)

-Explain that you would be quite capable of doing the job and that you have done heaps of plumbing in the past. (He will love to hear that his knowledge, skills and necessary equipment amount to being a glorified handyman.

-Tell the plumber that normally you use a different plumber but he was not answering his phone.

-Wait until he is nearly finished and ask him if he has time to embark on the dreaded “Friday tap “marathon”. There are no sweeter words on a Friday evening at 6 pm than “while Ive got you here”

-Make sure you have one of them terrifying, cold, damp, dead skin removing scrunchy things keeping guard over the shower handle.

-Watch the plumber closely. The plumbing skills you gleaned from your family member will place you well to critique his every action.

-Pull out some parts you picked up from True Value 10 years ago. (No sense wasting huh?)

-Keep locking the screen door. It may be a minor inconvenience for the plumber to keep having to ask you to unlock it whenever he needs to go to his truck, but home invasions are on the rise.

-Grill the plumber over why he has to leave site to pick up part for your Chinese imported toilet suite. That you “got a great deal on”.

-Complain about the invoice to all your friends about the plumbers price and unpleasant demeanour.

-Call a week later and say “Ever since your guy was here, the refrigerator light isn’t coming on”

That was funny af :awelol:

I got a couple new ones.

1) Save an old brake pad. It can be used as a tool to compress your caliper brake piston with a C-clamp. I used to use a small 2x4 wood block for this but the old brake pad is so much better.

2) Bong stem or bowl plugged? Go to the grocery store and get some turkey lacers. They work great! :bongload:

One of the most valuable items I have used for the past 1-2 years have been black yard waste bags with drawstrings. They look great, they can be hidden from view when needed, the hold a lot of stuff, they are waterproof, they are sealable (depending on how you tie or pull on the drawstrings) and they are scentless (well, most are).

The only real issue is sometimes they are "too hidden" to its contents, so what I will do sometimes when I am storing items inside the bag is put a white adhesive label on the open-edge of the bag and write on the label what's in the bag, for example, "Recycling" or "Winter Clothes".

My favorite brand are the Husky bags but there's another great brands that make the same quality.

Just discovered a new one.

Filling up an electric steam iron with water is kinda tricky. The best tool Ive found is using a plant watering can. The long, skinny spout makes filling up the water reservoir really easy.

Blue painters tape:
For straight lines many uses....grinding/cutting a granite counter top use the tape as your guide since a drawn line will be covered with dust( since you're not using a dust extractor like you should be)

Fishing wires thru walls use low voltage cut-in rings and a blank cover to hide the hole that you used...

A small chain dropped down the inside of wall with a  magnet on the outside or inside the hole for the outlet box.

Need to cut pvc in a deep hole can use a string like a bone saw.

For a coupler of two fixed in place pvc pipes can use a factory bell end as a slip coupler (not sure if only electrical conduits come with bell ends)

Need to reduce from 1" (trade size) pvc to a 3/4" glue bell end of  the latter inside the bell end of the former (same as couplers)

Heat guns (or better a hot box) for bending pvc and a spay bottle of water to cool it in desired position.

Locating a certain conduit amongst a group of them use the shopvacs blower option from the other end of the pipe.... no more running your hands over each pipe to feel for suction..

Then like previously meantioned vacuum the string line thru.
Though be careful pulling heavy wires a long ways with the string it'll burn and cut the pvc , Best to pull a rope or even the fish tape with the string line first.

Glow stick/fish sticks are fiberglass (tentpoles ) for electrical work well in attics cause they glow if charged for a minute in the sun and no more digging around insulation looking for your hole.
