Make any Mushroom contain psilocybin?

Just doing my normal late night google research and came across an article about lab synthesized psilocybin. apparently these genomes that produce psilocybin can physically travel between species by contact with the spores, a process known as Horizontal Gene Transfer. Is it this easy? Can you actually just drop some cube spores on any species of mushroom and try to isolate those genes into creating your own species of Psilocybe? Id like know your thoughts

This is some next-level genetic splicing right here!

With high-tech bio-engineering equipment, anythings possible
Id really like to see a Cube strain genetically spliced with glowing jellyfish DNA.

The article you read sounds like it contained some good information. You may just be misquoting the article.
But horizontal Gene transfer is better explained with flight. Birds evolved flight. So did bats. independently of each other. That's a horizontal Gene transfer.

No dude that's convergent evolution lmao, horizontal gene transfer is what the OP is talking about, or genetic information transferring between organisms, instead of from parent to offspring.
Do you have a link to the article, OP? It sounds interesting. As far as your question, no, it is not that easy. Genetics is more complicated then mashing two things together and hoping for the best (well, maybe it was like that when people were making cultivars for the first time, but you know what I mean). Even with things like CRISPR (which is fucking magical), you need advanced degrees and many years of research to figure out if something like that would even be possible.

Yeah birds didn't evolve flight, dinosaur did. Both birds and bats have a linage to dinosaurs of different species. Horizontal Gene Transfer would be the creation of the lemon.

My understanding is that the gene was transferred to a bacteria, and the bacteria was multiplied to produce the psilocybin. Yield was like a gram per liter of culture.

I've read this article or one like it. When they end the war on shrooms this bacteria will be where we get our trips. Or most people that don't grow shrooms will anyway.

HGT doesn't just happen because of contact in eukaryotic species. Bacteria do it all the time. Plants fungi and animals not so much. And in most cases it seems bacteria to plants, fungi, and animals is more common than fungi-fungi fungi-plant fungi-animal. Suggesting that it would probably be easier to use bacteria with the gene as starting point to try to affect a mushroom species.

The way i read it was they have E.coli that create the psilo and the E.coli can live in what ever specie you put it in.

Here’s the article
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/magic-mushroom-discovery-could-reveal-easier-way-make-psychedelic-drug-652033%3famp=1
This is fungi-fungi no bacteria transfer, they also mention using the naturally occurring enzymes to avoid having to use expensive bio-engineering equipment. It’s a pretty interesting read

They didn't say it was fungi-fungi they theorized it could have been. It's could be fungi to bacteria back to fungi or even a virus having done the transport.

Yes, this. Like, they're speculating on how the genes might have gotten there historically, possibly over many thousands of years. That being said I don't have the actual research article, so who knows what they actually said (scientists have quotes taken out of context by bloggers all the time).
The main takeaway from the article seems to be that it only took four chemical reactions to get from tryptamine to psilocybin, which is pretty awesome and shows just how efficient mushrooms are at doing what they do.
Nice find, OP!

Do we know the company / Laboratory that developed the psilocybin producing strain of e-coli? We need someone 2 get a job there, or an internship. If someone could get there hands on that culture, forget leaving everything to NPR, I'll put you in my will, and will also Grant you 1 billion internet's
Is it possible to engineer a strain of trichaderma that produces psilocybin?
