So those are PNW ovoids? And are they growing in a natural or man-made environment?

Stopped by the spot this morning. Forgot to mention before but these are Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata

Bring on the rain!! I took the immature cluster of three for research purposes and transplanted the stem butts directly into some fresh looking chips in a park nearby my place. Gotta find my way around some more wood chip areas!

Was looking around and caught a waft, looked directly behind me where the wind was blowing in from and there they were!

Somebody plucked the cluster but must have failed to realize they were Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata? This patch has what I believe to be Galerina marginata growing intermixed.

We brought this patch some water a few days ago so I could see what would happen. It was a great idea! So glad this is down the road I can provide gallons of water easily. I had a photo of the new pin clusters coming in but it was a bit blurry.

You are, stop getting them so wet. They like being dry too. If I was watering ovoids I'd be sure they got soaked but that they also had adequate draining so they're not sitting in it.
They have a lot of moisture around them growing in a microclimate like that. You should never have to help a microclimate during bad conditions, just let it do its thing, it knows what it's supposed to do with what it has, and what it is capable of. Leave them be it's always always always for the best and never the worst. I'm sure it's the cold not the water. Ovoids like soil that can dry fast but stays generally wet and gets lots of sun. Without all that it's just gonna sit.
I found these ovoids fruiting in this random planter that I saw somewhere.
Judging by the mycelium, they were clearly harvested off stem butts and chips out of Portland in 2016 and naturalized the past 3 seasons. They also appear to have a genetic heritage to specimens collected in Ohio. Doesn't get any closer to the source than that.
It's very nice to see them yet again. I don't think they'll have problems taking hold and sticking around. I'd imagine this person intends to spawn the entire planter when the season is over.

There have only been about 6-12 so far, all smaller than a Bic lighter. Some of them are growing underneath what appears to be a layer of tended verm, coir and woody soil. They keep getting watered by somebody but the cold is causing weak fruits like this, growing underground, and not knotting up and wadding like they do. I scratched a little of the surface today and they're starting.
I think that person is keeping them damp with hot water at night, and letting them sit in direct sun all day. South African cyans and Poland serbica have also randomly sprouted out of this during both spring and fall, so we will see. That heritage is from discovery specimens and I can only hope they naturalize here into spring fruiters.
Edit: Here are the spores. Will get a pic of a print when I get another one. I was only pulling purple prints the last few weeks. They're a little bit more brown lately, but still noticeable purple within the tan, almost a violet-type brown, bordering on a red when deposits are light, fading into purple brown as they get heavier. They've only recently started bruising hard on their own. But generally they've been staying beige. This is more or less average fruit size with approximately 2cm stipes that dry very fast on their own into next to nothing.

you can easily overwater a patch, I'm pretty sure that drying out is part of their natural progression and constant moisture is detrimental overall.

After several weeks of dry, sunny weather the spring rain is here! This will be my first season searching for spring fruiters (ovoids). Do any of you veterans here know if this strange weather cycle will effect the season? I'm a little south of Seattle if that makes a difference.

Stopped by the patch this morning. These wavy guys grow in with the ovoid patch and I almost wonder if they’re cyanescens , or ovoideocystidiata. They’ve spored out at that small size.

Logged out areas? [Re: TheDuder]

I was wondering if maybe they grow in logged out areas? I was thinking with the last few days of rain that I might check out some of the logging roads in my area.
I've never hunted any of the logging areas, so I don't know if there's anything to be found there or not. Thanks!

From what I understand yes logging clearings are great area to check but I don’t know if the spring variety grows there I do know that fall is a good time to check. But I also don’t know much so read a bit on your own mayb

in logged areas this time of year in PNW probably only gymnopilus species on dead conifers and panaleous species (mostly probably inactive or extremely weak) in grazed grassy cuts. as far as actives go.
ovoids don't grow out there. (Yet- i think they could. cyans and baeos and stunzii too) in the fall time there are some clear cuts with Psilocybe pelliculosa in them

So this isn't an ID request, pretty sure I have a whole lot of agrocybe here. I'm just wondering if you fine folks with more experience and success can tell me if this is a good indicator species and the habitat looks good for ovoids. Thanks!

Just checked on a few ovoids and they are a little bit bigger since last checking 4 days ago. They are around 2 inches tall but not much girth and caps are max 1 inch across. Since we have a few days of no rain is it better to harvest now or wait until the rain comes back in a few days?

The albino ones are my favorite. Such a cool look to them. It’s really interesting how one patch can carry so much variation. At this patch I find wavy ovoids, knobby cap looking ovoids, albino looking ovoids, and saucer cap ovoids as well.

Lmao! I think I found those same goddamn patches of agrocybes. I was super stoked to find my first voids and then I realized that they were uhh. Not the right ones.
I am pretty sure the only ones that are even close to actives are the bottom left of this image but even then I am an idiot so I don’t trust myself not to accidentally kill myself. Agrocybes looked so spot on with the gills and shape of the cap and even a light brown tint that I swore I had them. And many of the fieldcaps grow in the same area that hosts the others from what I understand. They also look very similar at a young age to actives as far as the yellow color and clustering. Is there a way to differentiate the agro or fieldcaps from the void besides bruising or brown color that they get later in their life?

Yo Sakrelig! A good differentiation method for ovoids vs. Agrocybes is giving them a good sniff. Ovoids smell a lot like fresh cubensis (and they smell strong as balls), but Agrocybe smell like bad peanuts, piss and disappointment. The veil is different on Agrocybes and ovoids, Agrocybes have a veil that comes down from the stem but ovoid veils come up from the stem from what I've seen.

Thankyou man! I appreciate that really. I guess I’m going to have to take a trip back up to the spot today and look around a different area than the last time. This is my first time ever hunting ovoids so I am pretty shitty at it lol. And the general area where I know of them is so large and foresty that it’s difficult to navigate sometimes so pretty much anything I find im like wow I found them! Wow I found them! Wow I found.... nothing

Anyone found Ovoids in the Willamette Valley? I know they are here but I don’t know if they are abundant enough to successfully find them. I know some parks where the river floods through the woods and into a slough in the winter but dries back up in the summer. Would that be a good place to look? There’s lots of grass and vegetation.

From all the stuff I've seen posted, I don't think you'll find West-Coast ovoids in the same places that people often find East Coast oviods ie out in nature in proximity to creeks.
Rather they seem to be found in the same places as cyans ie mulch beds and other man-influenced environments with plenty of digestible wood.
Maybe more seasoned west-coast ovoid hunters can correct me if I'm wrong.

Holy shit I am bad at this. I found those exact looking ones at a large park yesterday and I passed them up. Are ovoids basically always like dark brown like that when young because I found a few like that. Many of the ones I picked i am pretty damn sure are actually fieldcaps of some sort. I might have one active. Or might not. I really need help with this shit before I kill myself on accident. I was so stoked too cuz I thought I had them after all the time spent looking and walking that damn park.

Mobydick is correct. You want to be looking in mulch beds.
Sakrelig, Agrocybe pins can be dark too. Ovoid pins are sometimes dark but some phenotypes can be lighter colored. Also, please stop posting non active mushrooms. If you need to get an ID request, start your own thread.

Sakrelig: Peep this post https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26653015 Also, don't beat yourself up. Ovoids are not necessarily easy to find. I've only found one patch by myself and that was pure happenstance.
Here's a chonky baby from the other day.

I see you have an enemy in the last picture, any tried n true advice for keeping those slugs away from a woodchip bed? I've heard of using beer to draw them away, building a slugg fence, and just going out at night and killing or relocating them but it's my first year outdoors so I'm always looking for upgraded methods! Thanks

Slugs dont have 5h2ta brain receptors for psilocybin to occupy so they arent getting high they're just eating your mushrooms.

You can set traps of beer cans, slugo etc etc but I don't I usually get such large flushes that I consider it collateral damage they don't get too many.
Really the best way is to grow them in raised beds or tree planter containers. You can keep them completely out this way. You can also place a fine mesh netting over them to keep the gnats out as the larvea do just as much damage as the slugs

That makes sense, though will not destroy my love. I plan to get a slug tattoo hehe.
In other news I hope this big rain storm on the forecast pushes out some more clusters! The regular patch I visit has been producing for over a month and a half almost and I wonder when it is going back to bed.

I am also in the PNW and have similar problems with slugs. I have several bags of Corry's, but I always feel slightly guilty putting it out. But put it out I will until I'm out of it.
For now, I make daily rounds under all of our potted veggie/berry/herb plants and use the garden spade on them.
I'm also putting out the Corry's once every couple of weeks.
And I have two experimental beer traps that seem to be working nicely, but I feel badly about the wasted beer, so probably not going to repeat that.

These show ovoids from two separate patches in Seattle. The big ones grow singly in very deep grass and mulch.

Hi guys! Late season! Love it. Wondering if I found some albino ovoids, or are they just relatively dried out? There are other pics of ovoid finds that were close by. Last pics are some questionable mushrooms I found (growing in a cluster), but near the same patch (like 2 feet away). Looked like aborts almost, but no blueing. Been doing this for 6 or 7 years now, but I’m still stumped. Won’t consume those, obviously.

Some more Gymnopilus Luteofolius/Thiersii, hopefully after these good rains and sunny days the spot has flourished, I'll find out when I go hunting on my days off.

Panaeolus Subbalteatus/Cinctulus - 1st Panaeolus Subbalteatus/Cinctulus find of the spring season

Amanita Pantherina - so many of these out right now

Come on PNW hunters, where are the active finds. Let's keep the thread going.

You should post to mushroom observer get a reference number. We can make it kinda legit. I have some azures pre Fukushima labeled and jarred up untouched. Curious what they can test for. Supposedly more than just psilocybin etc..

I checked back on the Gym Luteofolius spot to see how the pins were coming along and see how fast they are growing. took a few that were mature enough and have already sporeulated. I will keep checking on it weekly and will be posting updates.
Gymnopilus Luteofolius

Found a solo little pin on log while checking my Psilocybe Pelliculosa, hopefully I see them start popping up soon.

Went out today looking for Psilocybe Stuntzii & Cyanescens around some new apartment complexes and some grassy wood chip landscaping areas with no luck. So I went back to the mountain to check my spots for any signs of Psilocybe Pelliculosa but to my surprise I found something even better, something new. I was just about to head on my regular trail I always go to head up the mountain. I seen a few little orange mushrooms next to my foot and thought why not check em out, but immediately to my surprise the first one I pick was bruising blue. Looked around my surroundings to find more, and every second one had some sort of blue bruising, from very little bruising to heavily bruising. Most of all my specimens are from the first area I found them, a grassy area next to the forest, and only found one or two more along the grass aside the gravel road.

Pholiotina Cyanopus

Gymnopilus Luteofolius
Found popping up out of the gravel logging road

Well I’m an amateur at foraging and mycology in general, but I tend to fully agree. It’s never cool to exploit such a natural sacred medicine for personal gain/profit.

I tend to agree, but commercialization will inevitably follow(or drive) legalization, as it is doing with Marijuana. IMO the best thing we can hope for is that commercialization is performed by people who understand and appreciate the medicine, but fat chance of that. I don't have any dog in this particular fight, just my two cents.

Beautiful specimens, and quite lovely photography. Keep up the good work everyone. I'll contribute soon
-------------------- Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

The West WA coast to the peninsula really sucked for actives.
West Oregon sucked except the forested dune parts with mixed biomass that retains water. NW Oregon was the worst of all. See you guys there in Dec, lol.
Stunning though if you love exercise and nice weather. There's still blackberries left. Hot and dry, and if not that, dry cold coastal air ripping over the dunes.
I found boletes and some other babies. Glad to see they still grow after the 2019 drought. What a sad sack of shit last year was.
