What cool projects or things are you doing or want to do? * 3
    #26508293 - 02/28/20 02:17 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

What cool shit are you into?
What cool shit do you want to get into? Hobbies, projects, plans, etc.

Anyone building something cool? Setting up a home lab? Starting a band? Building a yurt? Keeping goats? Making your own candles and shit?

What's on your docket, or what are you interested in eventually getting into?

What kind of stuff does Shroomery get into in their spare time?

Started home schooling recently so I'm on the lookout for cool projects. Recently put together a Python program to help with learning about taxonomy. It pulls taxonomy data from wikipedia given names of articles, and puts together a tree of life showing how they are connected.

What cool shit are you into?
Drawing, collage art, playing records, dancing, playing drums, playing bass guitar, making lectronic musics, remixing songs & other dark arts

What cool shit do you want to get into?

Animation, telepathic body modification & turn making music/art into an income.

Anyone building something cool?
Halfpipe, a make shift bass guitar with rubber bands & my self-confidence.

Setting up a home lab?
That would be dope

Starting a band?
Been in a couple of bands way back when and would love to do it again.

Building a yurt?
Nurp

Keeping goats?
I would like to do this as assistance to yard upkeep

Making your own candles and shit?
Candles, no.  Shit, yes.

What's on your docket, or what are you interested in eventually getting into?

Becoming a gourdsman after the apocalypse

What kind of stuff does Shroomery get into in their spare time?
Well, to be honest, all the cool stuff that I mentioned I really haven't done in quite some time.  I spend a lot of my time now taking care of my main squeeze due to a heart condition she has developed in recent years.

That's a great idea for a coding project. Fun and creative!

Homeschooling yourself or someone else? If you're ever looking for Python based data analysis/viz and data science projects, check out kaggle. Super comprehensive tutorials and kernals done by other users that makes it easy to get hands on fast, just uses Jupyter Notebooks right on Kaggle itself. They also do data analysis competitions with actual cash prizes, often times it's local governments just looking for answers and insights.

Project Euler is also a pretty cool math site that uses programming logic to teach advanced crazy math. I haven't had the self discipline to actually give it a try, I'm balls deep in my first real statistics class that I'm trying to find a similar programming oriented resource for.

And I feel you. Spare time for fun stuff always ebbs and flows. Most important thing is taking care of you and yours.

My kid. Teaching him some Python too but just the basics so far. We have a book for kids on the Pygame library, which I have messed around with a bit but not too recently. Hoping to make a Plants vs Zombies clone with him eventually.

Also my dad was helping me with some building projects outside, a privacy fence and gate to the backyard that I built pretty half assed over the summer and got wrecked by the wind when winter came. So the gate has proper hinges and a latch instead of hanging from eye hooks, and the fencing is reinforced by 3 steel cables going horizontally. I still have some more to do on the fence but I'm not worried about wind damage any more.

I'm working on a portfolio for my architecture career, designing my own stuff in my spare time when I'm not doing 3D renderings for someone else.

Kind of been lazy the past few weeks, but really need to get myself back on track asap.

I did a lot of abstract digital art for a year or so, would like to do that again someday.

I play drums, and would like to join a psychedelic funk band too...someday.

Also wanna move to a different city...

SOMEDAY!

Awesome, the earlier the better for sure. I wish I had been able to take programming classes in pre-k. Would've made math as a whole much easier with something interesting and tangible to apply it to.

Interesting. At first I'd assume it was just the inside that changes, not your actual appearance. But I've done enough acid and experienced enough thangs on it to really question if there isn't something there.

South Africa seems gorgeous and kinda dangerous, and having had a little bit of experience in not so nice areas, I can safely say that the amount it really affects your day to day life, even indirectly, is crazy. Any idea of where you'd like to land?

I have a 1 year old so most of my free time is gone. I use the little free time I have left to do art, garden, play video games, and other stuff.

This week I have been getting my garden in order. I planted and repotted about 40 trees, 100 veggies, and a bunch of cannabis plants.

The art I have been working on is a black light painting that Asantes ghost told me to paint.

For building next week I am starting to rewire 2 apartments that burned down, installing 4 heating units in a few other apartments, rebuilding an electrical service, and installing some lighting. I need to paint the foundation on my house too.

I might take my dirt bike out and ride it through the neighborhood later or tomorrow. It's been over a year since I've been riding.

Next week I'm going to the Avenue of the Giants!!!

Yeah as someone with already poor time management, I'm so glad I don't have to account for and constantly keep alive a little person. I feel like sometimes I barely do that for myself .

You're so lucky to live close to nature like that - hope you enjoy it every chance you get, because I'm super jealous.

Yeah, it is beautiful and dangerous. But we kind of pride ourselves on being tough sons of bitches. But everyone is getting pretty tired of having to look over their shoulders.

I'd firstly like to go to Cape Town. Not really that safe, but mainly just for the social atmosphere, and connections - where I live it's mostly for families and not so much for young adults.

Ideally I'd like to emigrate to somewhere...not sure where though. If it's at all even possible and WW3 doesn't break out or some crazy ass shit.

Really want to experience first world living...

South Africa's infrastructure isn't that bad in comparison with the rest of Africa, but definitely not great. Generally I feel safe where I currently live, but you still have to keep your guard up. Shit can get real.

I was going to buy a 3D printer, but my work laptop shit the bed so I had to buy a new one. 3D printing was going to be my new hobby, but for now I'm sticking with learning C/C++ and fucking around with programming embedded systems.

Might start trying to make rave masks for the fiance that have LEDs and OLED screens in them.

That's super cool! I think it's a really smart idea for parents to get their kids into learning programming. Going forward I think programming is by far one of the best skills you can pick up for getting a job. Even if you arent like programming for a living, there's so many ways you can implement programs into your life and automate trivial things.

Have you heard about Sketch at all? There's a really popular Sketch framework for Raspberry Pi's (i think) intended to help introduce kids to programming, but I think it might be targeted to kids under the age of 5.

After dealing with PTSD one year and being pretty goddamn sick the next I'm finally getting into some serious home renovation on my shitty old falling apart farm house.

It's not easy but damn if it isn't gratifying.

And by that I mean I'm still a 10 year old psychopath at heart and am really enjoying demolishing shit. :awesome:

That sounds super cool though. Taxonomy is fascinatingly inadequate as a scientific method. Like there's millions of man hours of refinement left to the practice. Without us even discovering anything new.

So I really respect that idea. Maybe the wider world will too.

Yeah, it's a lot of work for sure and really time consuming. I have my wife to help, but no grandparents or family in the area to help babysit. We make it work and it's getting easier and easier. I couldn't imagine trying to raise a kid while being single.

I do enjoy the nature as much as possible. My front window actually has a view of the whole Bay Area and I can see the sun setting over the bay and mountains every night and I enjoy that as much as I can. Besides that I do a lot of hiking around the bay and through San Fran. I try to get out to somewhere like Yosemite or the Avenue of the Giants at least every month or two. Last month I went through Death Valley and that was super pretty in a desolate way.

If you ever want to come visit the area and check out some awesome nature sights then let me know. I could put you up and show you some sights. I try to accommodate travelling Shroomerites when ever possible.

I can get by in Java to some degree but I find it relatively clunky to write and a bit of a chore. Python is a lot of fun to program in and can be very human readable and concise. The tradeoff is that the Python interpreter can be pretty inefficient in certain ways, so a lot of the time if there is real heavy lifting to be done it gets passed on to libraries implemented in other languages.

For a few years I used to TA for a first year university CS course that used Python but I burned out at it due to anxiety. Never liked public speaking.

Yeah on the surface it seems like it would all be relatively easy to pin down with DNA tech today, but I'm learning more and more that it's a whole big mess. With this utility I added a simplified mode so it only considers the main categories you would learn in grade school or whatever. But the info on wikipedia will often include a bunch of subcategories and unranked categories etc. So the tree was coming out kind of fucked up when I just included all the categories as is, with categories of the same rank not necessarily appearing at the same depth. Could be fixed without discarded the "extra" levels I'm sure but I have not thought of how best to approach it yet.

I would love to learn how build diorama art to look realistic in recreated favorite tv moments. For example a classic moment of the twilight zone was an episode called "To serve man" and the fear and gravity of revelation by the last woman on earth telling the linguist that the book was a cookbook but they already were taking him up the stairs. That in a small see through display. That's just an example though I thought of other tv and movie moments as well but I've extensively looked into it and it's too expensive for :frown:

I recently assembled a 3D printer kit. It was actually more fun that i imagine it would be building it. I'll post some pics later when I have a chance. Im currently waiting on a part from China. Taking For-Eve-Er. But maybe in a week (or two :nonono:)

Ive been alao getting back into recording music off internet sources using only my PC and a DJ mixer. Its a lot of fun and u get free music in the process.

I'm pretty sure there's kits out there, and tutorials on how you can make your own CNC machine with a Raspberry Pi and an arduino if i recall correctly.

I want to make my house into a paradise for my kittehs!.. Like platforms on the walls and tunnels and bridges and shit for them.

But.. I rent.. And will likely never be able to afford to buy a house, so this dream will likely never become a reality

But.. I rent.. And will likely never be able to afford to buy a house, so this dream will likely never become a reality

A lot of times when I get a big box or multiple boxes then I make forts and tunnels for my cats. They get bored after a day or two and then I can switch them up.

You could make it, just make it all free-standing stuff. Start with a carpeted tube and fort and add one thing every month. Post pics too please!

Yeah as someone with already poor time management, I'm so glad I don't have to account for and constantly keep alive a little person. I feel like sometimes I barely do that for myself .

You're so lucky to live close to nature like that - hope you enjoy it every chance you get, because I'm super jealous.

Ya will do! I'm trying to get out to the left coast for a bit, maybe next fall. I have to go to a wedding down south, and I'm thinking I might take all my vacation time around then and fly west for a bit. I'm sure it's spectacular out there in the fall.

South Africa seems gorgeous and kinda dangerous, and having had a little bit of experience in not so nice areas, I can safely say that the amount it really affects your day to day life, even indirectly, is crazy. Any idea of where you'd like to land?

Yeah, I believe it.  I worked with an organization for a long time as kind of a software consultant. They were all over Africa in the most remote regions in like Benin, and Malawi. Whoo boy trying to get them a cohesive video conferencing platform that was in their nonprofit budget, and useable over vast swaths of the continent and in the US was a pain in the ass. The digital divide is real, for sure. There's just absolutely no infrastructure in some countries.

Cape Town seems super cool though, very cosmopolitan. I'd love to see it one day myself and dive those glorious shark infested waters :pirate:

I'm picturing something from a kit where you could snap in a Dremel or something as the cutting tool. I have a couple of those lying around and they are able to cut through anything I'd be likely to work with.

I've recently gotten hooked on the AvE guy's channel on YouTube.

He's a millionaire from YouTube revenue and he spent a bazillion Canadian pesos on a badass CNC machine for his garage that he messes around with.

If I had my choice of any vacation anywhere in the world I would choose going to hang out with him in his shop for a week.

Malcolm Xstasy was doing some standup that was pretty decent, he posted some videos.

A week or two ago I signed back up for this Bell Canada streaming service that has the new Picard show, and someone I went to high school with had her own comedy special on there. And apparently she has written for some different comedy shows on Canadian TV.

Just one.

What's the deal with driving?  It's illegal to drive drunk but perfectly ok to drive thinking about the universe.

I was driving to work the other day getting deep into my own head, thinking about how particle physicists are basically just atoms studying themselves, and before I knew it I'm banking a left into my work parking lot.  That shit's dangerous.  At least when you're drunk you're laser focused on the road trying to drive straight.

Could you imagine getting pulled over for that?  "Sir, how much have you had to think this evening?"

It needs some work..

Cool man.

Yeah, bombing a joke is the worst but forgeting your lines is the absolute worst! Im sure u already know but repetition is one of the best ways to remember things. And memory cues such as a index card. Ive heard some comedians pretend to check their phone, but really the phone has a memory cue on it that helps them if they forgot some material.

I generally have to be super drunk to dance around anyone.

The one thing I've done on stage that was not too bad for nerves was performing Irish music. Done that a few times in front of fair sized crowds but always with other people. And I guess I was in a student play once in high school that wasn't too bad. My character was supposed to flip out and toss a table and chairs around the stage and I got into the role pretty well I thought. I guess that stuff is easier for me if I don't have to "be myself". In a teaching role I felt like I had to fake something while "being myself" and that is not something I know how to do.

Thanks Psi  do you think people would buy them? They're very expensive to make from scratch apparently so I'd have to be sure. However I also want to do it just because I really love the idea of tv/movie moments that in one scene it can be an amazing twist, origin of an Iconic character. Just a moment in any scene when you were truly inspired to say wow! Sort of smile laughing to yourself at what a cool moment, twist or even just iconic moments in general.

Any ideas for your favorite movie moments? Also IF anyone has a resource for figurines that I can paint and customize to my various needs for the pieces id appreciate it, I'd love to do it but when I look for resources they have pretty basic figures without the ability to position them or change the clothes or paint them really. Also ideas on how to make things like the spaceship in my "To serve man" moment in time idea as well as the surroundings ie: the railing leading up to the craft, chain link fences, the tarmac etc let me know it could help me learn how to do something I just dream of right now.

I get that but that's why I have never gone to karaoke even though I sing well and enjoy it. Having an audience of any kind for me also makes me freeze up pretty badly. I almost passed out during to give my best friend his best man speech at his wedding and apparently I was so nervous that no one else could hear me except the bride and groom

I'd think there could be a market for sure, especially if the details are really on point. Built in lighting could be cool too to really duplicate the feel.

One thing I thought would be really cool is casting some TNG ships from metal. Specifically, the Enterprise from aluminum and the green Klingon and Romulan ships from copper. Then you could treat the copper somehow to give it a green patina that looks like the real ones.

I came into this thread looking for inspiration. I wish I could still make music I just get frustrated and rage quit my DAW after a while with no progress made. Miss being able to physically play the bass guitar before my hands stopped working but honestly the same issue was starting to happen where I was never satisfied with the things I made.

I guess my hobbies are alcohol, mush cult, and video games. I yearn for more though. Someday I wanna do some food gardening or find a way to enjoy making music again. I also really miss riding around on my tricycle but a new tricycle is so far away from me right now financially.

That sounds cool, used to love doing dioramas for school.

There is a pretty big community that does miniatures for doll houses, model railroads, and other stuff. That would be a good start for pieces. I've been checking out model railroad tracks that people build on youtube and some of them look very life like.

You could definitely sell them, especially if you made more mainstream stuff like from Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, Fear n Loathing, and so on. Sounds cool! The thing is that you might not be making a profit or will have to wait a while when you sell them. I have some art that people want to buy. The problem is that I put over 100 hours into some so they have a labor value and a sentimental value. A lot of people would pay $100 or $200 for them, but to me they're worth a few thousand dollars and I really doubt people want to pay that so instead of selling my art, I just pile it up under my house.

I love those ideas TNG is by far one of my life long loves and constant inspirations  I'd have to learn how to do it and where to get materials I need but there's a lot of great episodes I could draw from there. I will really have a lot of good episodes to draw on. Since I'm focusing on moments in episodes I'll have to go over revelatory moments and I know there's been more then a fair share. Off the top of my head though I'd love to do the episode "Genesis" where crusher accidentally activated the wrong Tcell in Barclay and it turned everyone into different species. Also i think the episode name was "The royale" or something to that effect where they find a pocket of breathable air and people in the middle of a giant gas planet after they found wreckage of 20th century aircraft floating by. There's many good scenes in their with pivotal moments. Hmmmmmm :strokebeard:

As far as the castmold ships there's tons of great space moments but I event been watching this year for other reasons and it's not at the forefront of my mind atm

I did a couple of casts using the lost wax technique when I was in high school or so (wax original, plaster negative mold, melt wax away and then pour in metal). Plumbing solder melts at a reasonably low temp and is lead free.

I have been teaching myself music theory and music production so I can set up an online business selling beats and offering music and services.

I still got some ways to go.

Very cool!

Ive seen some talented spray paint artists lately. At festivals and even illegal street graffiti is getting really good! Watching trains go by is actually pretty awesome now.

What sorta style you go for?

I'm building a polymer80 pistol. You take a 80% lower and you build the gun of your dreams. It's a ton of fun!
