A possible tek for storing and sterilising glass Petri dishes
    #26506843 - 02/27/20 04:48 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

After just finishing a tin of stuffed vine leaves I realised the empty tin could come in handy.

I think all vine leaves tins are the same size, but they perfectly fit four 90cm Petri dishes.

I haven’t tried this yet but theoretically it should work for both storing and oven sterilising.

1. Eat vines from the tin.
2. Wash said tin remove labelling

3. Then with a pair pliers flatten the sharp lip on the inside of the tin

4. Get a sheet of heavy duty foil that can fit about 8 dishes in a rectangle (can be bigger) to form into a lid)

5. Stack four 90cm Petri dishes upside down on a clean surface

6. Place tin on top of stack

7. Flip dishes and tin over

8. Put foil on tin like a lid.

9. Stick in oven for over an hour at the highest (min 233°C) for 1 hour

When cooled you can prep you SAB and have these ready for pouring agar or put them away for storage

The following is done with sanitised gloves with alcohol
1. Place them in the SAB upside down

2. Take the bottom off

3. Then flip them round on clean foil or other clean dish lids and remove the foil lid

4. Stack each pile in the SAB ready for agar pouring.

Obviously there will be the issue of how many you can fit in the SAB but I’m yet to try it practically.
If not useful, hopefully laughable.

That should work, and does save a bit of foil, but you could just pour the agar from a pot into the unsterile dishes, stack and wrap them in foil or with your can, PC 20, then they are ready to use when cool, no need to dick around pouring at a certain temp in a box. Probably just me, idk.

I do want to find a good reusable pc-able container to ditch the foil. Your can is an improvement. I once tried a pp5 container but it touched the sides, resulting in a plastic meltdown.

Its the possibility of the agar overflowing, that’s why I would rather pour. Also my PC only goes to 15.
The foil lid it reusable, maybe autoclave tape would help in sealing and maintaining sterility.

I'm calling this a myth. It just doesn't happen.

15psi for 15-20min is perfect for agar.

I like this a lot, but need some half as tall, but now I know there is a thing out there.

You know the rings that hold that mason lids on? They fit perfectly over a tuna fish can. I've made little cases like that with piece of foil, the can, and the ring to hold it on.

Like this except with foil instead of seran wrap so you can sterilize it.

That's a step in the right direction, but still needs foil.
