My first attempt at the Penis envy strain and while it’s been close to two weeks there is still no pinning. Also there are what look like big hard mycelium balls that have formed. Any thoughts?

I have never grown PE, but i know that this is a common issue. I heard that casing the substrate might solve it.
Search for "Penis Envy Blobs" or something like that.

Yeah those are blobs... they’re really potent usually. Pick and dry them out just like normal fruits.
If you want normal fruits with PE, you’re going to want to case thick (3/4”-1”) with a peat based (jiffy mix seedling starter mix) casing. You might still get a few blobs, but they fruit normally when that’s used.. the thinner the casing layer, the more blobs you’ll get

+1 on casing.
I’m running 3 PE clones from my first grow and they’re all taking 2.5-3 weeks to pin.
The blobs are ready when they start getting soft. Usually they pop right off pretty clean.
The second flush should come in as actual mushrooms.

It won’t work like peat does... if you do use just coir, it needs to be thick, but you’ll probably still get blobs

I've always done a coir/vermiculite casing and never had issues with blobs. Not sure if that's good luck, good genetics or a combination of the two.
I will do a ~1/2" pseudo-casing when initially spawning to bulk and then another ~3/4" actual casing once it mostly colonized. Would you be kind enough to elaborate on why peat performs better in your experience? I'm genuinely curious and usually looking for ways to improve.

I think it’s because you’re using such a thick layer of the pseudo casing that it’s working for ya. Not entirely sure why peat works so much better.. maybe being non nutritious and there may be other physical properties that make it pin better.. I think a lot of it is due to the thickness.. PE seems to fruit best the further away from a high nute source it is.. ime anyway.

The casing issue has been coming up a lot recently, it's quite contentious.

Okay cool thanks for the response! Yeah I definitely find that PE benefits from extra consolidation time. Shoeboxes usually take about 4-5 days to mostly colonize the pseudo-casing and then another 2-3 days for the actual casing. Then another week or so before knots start. Welllllll worth the wait though 😁

IF PE seems to fruit best the further away from a high nute source how about a perlite casing? Should i wait to see if i get any regular pinning or just add a casing layer right over the blobs? seems the blobs are the only things growing at this point.

I’ve tried casing once it was blobbing but it was too late.
Don’t think it hurt anything though.
