clarifying psychological terms
    #26506300 - 02/27/20 10:47 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Some mainstream psychological terms that I find useful to understand and observe.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/26/smarter-living/the-difference-between-worry-stress-and-anxiety.html?action=click&module=moreIn&pgtype=Article®ion=Footer&action=click&module=MoreInSection&pgtype=Article®ion=Footer&contentCollection=Smarter%20Living

basically worry is that thing you can do in mind, if you do it enough it becomes obsession.
stress is something you can sense in body, you can find it in tension, and agitation.
anxiety is a combination of the two.
all three of them have clear evolutionary or adaptive advantages (as described in the article.)
becoming aware of worry, stress and anxiety, and discovering the causes of each is useful while navigating challenges in life.

another similar article but with a bit of a buddhist context is this one in which a Rinpoche discusses facing death and related issues.

I hope you enjoy these references.

Generally emotions are manifested in firstly in the body, but also in the mind.

However in the case of dreaming, the dream body is of course in the mind. The real body may simultaneously sweat & have increased heart rate, but there is no awareness of it.

So in the case of dreams its all a bit different. As we dream about 6 times a night every night, and probably many people have dreams that are more emotional than their everyday lives, and there can be mood "spill over" from dreams into everyday life, its most likely a bit more complicated than we might assume.

Who the hell has time for a NY Times subscription?

At any rate I’ve always, somewhat mindlessly, considered “stress” to be nearer to your definition of anxiety.  Although “stress” as a bodily dimension seems to hit closer to home, and that “anxiety” is the culmination of mental and physical disturbance.  I could buy that.
