Challenging timing
    #26374705 - 12/11/19 09:44 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Well here I am on 12 /11 and my cakes look like this. My problem is I'm going to be out of town from 12/21 thru 01/02. (Happy New Year by the way!) I digressed.
My question is, should I put them in a shotgun terrarium now and hope for a crop before 12/21 or should I put them back in their jars, keep their storage at maybe 72 degrees and wait until the new year to proceed. I know setting and feelings are important so maybe I shouldn't rush this. And maybe it will be a good way to bring in the new year too. Expert opinions please.
In case you are wondering I got cold feet prior to the "roll" part of the "dunk and roll"
Thank you.

From my experience, mushrooms tend to mature pretty fast and you could probably have a flush out of those before you leave (maybe not fully mature but should be close) so I’d go ahead and fruit. If you don’t fruit now they will just grow mushrooms anyway. If you harvest before you leave you should be alright and might have another flush waiting when you get back.

Spawn them to trays or something to take up the time. Two cakes aren't going to yeild much as a tray or shoebox. I wouldn't stick them back in the jar to store them it's not clean now. Maybe you could put them in the jar and top fruit using a bag. Not likely you will harvest before your trip, maybe you would have knots but I don't see pins until after 8-10 days.

Donttrustmidgets if they don't harvest in time they will have cakes trying to fruit while they're gone and if they leave they won't come back to more fruits, in a sgfc they'll prob come back to rubbery blue shriveled up cakes. In my experience at least. Better to crumble and case in a mini mono or dubtub and have a real harvest ready when they come back.

I guess it just depends. I usually get pins in a like 4-5 days, then they took a round a week to mature. I have gone on trips when I used to do cakes and came back to some fruits, but there were spores everywhere. Bulk is always better as you suggested, but I guess it’s up to the individual if they want go that route.

I’d either clean the jars and put them back and maybe In the fridge, or I think the best option is to spawn a shoebox like was said.

If you crumble them up and mix with coir it should be pretty good timing when you getback. You’ll prob return to a bunch of ready to harvest mushrooms.

Well here I am again. I put these back into clean jars and now they look like this. The one on the rear left has some white fuzz on the top of it and I'm hoping someone can tell me what to do next. I don't know what spawn a shoebox means so I didn't/couldn't proceed that way. My understanding (previously) was to use a shotgun terrarium as the next step.
I can tell you that these had a fermented smell to them when I opened the jars. My flash did not go off and therefore they are brighter than the picture.
Thank you for your input although it might be harsh!

A good shoebox TEK : https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662/fpart/1/vc/1

Just find some guidance on how to proceed with shredded cakes (not sure if something gets added to them?) instead of using grain spawn+coir in the box like in the TEK description.

I’ve crumbled cakes into coir before with nothing else and it went fine.

They look like normal cakes still so that’s good.

You should really put a couple in a shoebox if you can just to compare with the cakes.

Shoes are so much easier and yield more.

I want to thank you both for your answer. Having a shoe box is totally new to me so I'll definitely be clicking on that link to further my education. I would have have never have known so, once again, thank you both.

Mr BovineJoni..thank you for the sff shoebox link. That is going to really change things for me.
I ask that you please keep an open mind when I ask you these questions and after contemplation to give me a thumbs up or thumbs down!
I have a shot gun terrarium, from last time, that measures about 12x12x16. I bought a Wathia variable speed ac computer fan use in this box because my last batch was leggy, presumably because of to much c02 ?. I also bought a Willhi humidity regulator that will go on at 75% and off at 90%. (Both are on amazon or ebay) I already have a reptile humidifier.
Do you think I should hook these up to my Shotgun terrarium and if so how many 1/2 pint jars do you think I should put into this size tub?(along with the coir)
The lighting I used last time was a cfl 6500k, 60 watt equivalent.
Also, can I put all 5, 1/2 pint jars into one large shoebox.
Thank you for taking the time to answer.

After all of that thinking I decided to keep it simple.
This container has an air and moisture resistant seal so I would think that it should stay at a high humidity. I can usually make a project out of stuff but hopefully less so this time.
From here it's going to go into an area kept at 85 F and be under a 100w replacement cfl (using 23w) giving off 1600 lumens and having 6500k.
I used three of my five pf tek half pints in this 18x15x12 tote because two of them were showing black and green mold. ugh.
Also, I used Thrive Loose Coconut Bedding if this helps Mr. Bovine Joni with the hammer and screwdriver part.
Thanks for your help and if I get a good flush I will show off my work.

Sounds good but drop that temp to high 70s. 85 is right at the limit and with the extra heat inside the coir it might be too much.

I think they’ve figured optimal growth is like 77 somewhere around there.

Either way 86 is the ceiling.

If I get half of what your flush got I'll be happy!
77 it is. Thank you.

What is that black stuff on the cakes? (Or is it just bad lighting?)

I also see various browns and gooey looking patches (patch near the top on the third cake that looks like mucus). They look pretty contaminated. How do they smell?

Some of it is bad lighting. They smelled fermented.

I don't have a photo but the shoebox/monotub has a low layer of white...hopefully mushroom fungus growing over near 1/2 of it. This is with 12 hours of 6500k light per day and keeping the tub at 77 degrees f. It seems to be progressing slowly but I trust that it is all happening the way it is suppose to; spiritually speaking.

I would like to ask anyone willing about how this is progressing. Both in terms of rate of growth as well as the health of the fungi. If you have any suggestions I am open to learn. Thanks.
