What makes people skeptical of the unknown?

I have mentioned here and there about meditation, or hypnosis. These are both a set of tools that have really helped me a lot. It's beyond words what a lot of these things can do in the right context
I was wondering why people seem to be so skeptical when I bring this up? Someone who is a cancer researcher in my friend circle proudly declared that meditation is bullshit when I mentioned it in passing for example.
Why is this so? is this due to the cultural trauma from religion?

Yeah I think religious fear is a factor for many. I've met people who believe that any and all body poses derived from yoga are inextricably Hindu and are incompatible with Christianity no matter your intent.
Then there is also the thing about placing more value on things you have bothered to learn about, and less on things that you haven't, in order to prop up your own self-importance. This comes up in the programming world in the form "Language X that I haven't bothered to learn sucks, and so do people who have bothered to learn it and have decided there is some value in it."

Hey Topdog82, what happened to your old account? U get locked out or something?
As for your question, some people are stuck in their ways and are resistant to new, different ideas. Religion does play a part for sure, but most scientists are not religious. It basically goes back to be stubborn and not open minded to other possibilities. They have already made up their mind on how reality works and attempting to change that will be met with adversion and skepticism.

People can get pretty smug about reductionism but I think science has really only scratched the surface of how the mind works. And there is nothing inherently hocus pocus about the idea of meditation. A psychiatrist might prescribe you some pills instead. Supposedly his methods are based in science but there seems to be a hell of a lot of guesswork involved.

I didn't want to meditate because I was a little disappointed by the idea of having to put in a lot of effort to only glimpse what psychedelics gave me so freely.
I'm getting older and more focused now, so hopefully the annoying adhd child in me will shut up soon, so that I can meditate more frequently.
I think people avoid it, because they are trapped in ideas.
I wouldn't have thought about meditation for one second if psychedelics didn't destroy the whole sense of self I had going on once upon a time.
Also, the whole point of fundamental religion and such is to keep your mind locked and loaded, imo. Boring shit.
As long as meditation doesn't become religious banter and self-proclaimed gurus don't tell me what to do with my mind, I don't mind to do it, or witness it.

Biblical interpretations of reality breakdown in the presence of... reality
People who adhere to a fake reality will be tested daily and might develop fear of the natural world

I find just being out in nature pretty meditative as I understand the concept. Ideally naked.

I'd like to try that some day, haha.
For me atm, it's jogging in the streets or exercise in general.

People are disenchanted.
We're on a magic mushrooms board. Good luck trying to find people who believe in Magic.

Religion is a good choice to blame, but I guess this thing is way older than religion, it's more animalistic fear.

Most people have their heads so far shoved up their butts that you can give them substantial evidence and they still would dismiss it. People are afraid of what they don’t understand. Science has proven meditation and hypnotherapy to work.

This is the reason I explain things a whole lot less than I used to. People will disregard regardless.

sup guys. I forgot my password to my account and got locked out. I do K once per month and pretty much quit everything else for now. it has done wonders for my depression.
Anyways, I was coming out of a k hole and barely remember logging into the shroomery and changing my password. I remembered it eventually. I actually thought I was locked out for good. this "betabitch82" account was my solution.
the whole scenario is pretty damn funny haha
Anyways, these answers have actually really helped me understand the ignorance here. FYI if you don't want to meditate, then don't. but to deny the science at hand is just silly
I think that we need to add here that I feel like people confuse doubting others beliefs and being a skeptic with being an intellectual
I feel that if you call yourself an atheist or someone who denies reincarnation or ghosts its a also a sort of pseudo intellectual/contrarian fashion statement? Most of society believes religion in some sense of the word so when you assert that you don't believe in this it would stroke your ego that you are a unique person
Some girl that I dated said she was into spirituality too when I mentioned the books I was reading. And I asked her what she was into. She told me that she reads western astrology charts in her spare time
