When to harvest? [Re: beadle] * 1
    #27354950 - 06/19/21 08:46 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

So the town square in my town has a ton of different plants and flowers growing all over, and they all have little ID placards next to them, and a couple days ago I was walking around when the words "papaver somniferum" caught my eye, whereupon I realized there were a ton of poppies all over the place in different stages of flowering.

First off, can anyone verify that these ARE in fact opium poppies?

And if so, how do i know when they're ready for scoring?

A thread i found on here says appx 2 weeks after the petals fall off, which some are in the process of doing right now.

Others are way bigger and have no petals, but I have no experience with this endeavor, so can't tell if they're ready or haven't even bloomed yet.

Anyway, here's a couple quick snaps.
There's plenty more specimens around and the square is right around the corner if it would help to go back and take some more detailed pics.

Anyways thanks y'all.

Oh?  What exactly is the difference between snagging some poppy heads and grabbing some ovoids out of a public planter?

Like mentioned, only those in the first pics are somniferums.

By "scoring", I assume you are talking about cutting/lancing the pods for collecting their latex/opium?

....and not "scoring", as in, "Bruh, I just scored some poppy pods from the town square" lol.

Cutting/lancing/"scoring" the pods is not the way to go unless you have a pretty large patch/plot of flowers...It takes many MANY plants/pods to collect even a small amount of opium by cutting the pods. Making tea with the whole pods is a much more effective & efficient use of the plant. Do your own research about that because discussion about such isn't allowed in this thread/forum.

Cool to see somniferums growing in a down town area within landscaping. :awesome:

Some of those pods looks like they're already fully ripe/seeded.

The difference would be that ovoids sprung up on their own, where someone had to physically plant those poppies, thin them, water them and even make a label.  They appreciate seeing their work and I would assume they're planning on harvesting the seed pods for next year.  Looks like somebody already grabbed one. A single mature pod has literally hundreds of seeds.  I would be pissed if someone stole all my pods, take one start your own garden.

thanks.  have fully morphed into one of those nerdy plant snob weirdos complete with ego. feeling very accomplished some of those varieties are from a very special time and place. never really done them well in this climate and i was worried the seeds had spoiled they are the remnants of many a past life and tell old stories about birches and spruce porches and magpies and outhouses and long cool ribbons of water cutting through emerald summertime hills. my love is a selfish love

Black Swans started flowering today, should be a nice little harvest.  These guys only need 6" spacing, much less than Gigs.  Kicking myself for pulling out a few monsters, at least I'll know for next year.

Looking good man!

Reminds me of the 'bubble gum' strain, wonder if you'll get pink latex...?

Just making tea, or are you gonna try and milk a few?
