I'm not following what it is you're describing.
So you placed pods/stems in a stainless steel bowl and let them sit in the bowl "all season".
Then by "the end of the season" the pods/stems have somehow turned the bowl black with a residue and you scraped it out? I really don't understand what's going on here or what you're describing. What is it that you're collecting by letting pods & stems sit in a bowl?
What do you mean by "all season" or by the "end of the season"?....When I've harvested pods I consider that to be the end of the season, my pods go directly into tea at that time. I don't let them sit around for months/through out a season.
How or why did the steel bowl turn black after pods/stems were sitting in it? Why do you let them sit in it anyways? What's the point of letting pods/stems sit in a steel bowl for a few months/through out an entire season?

We had several weedy looking blue-green plants this year that bore big, red, carnation-style flowers. The flowers died back to plump poppy pods! I've only ever seen the California poppy, which is entirely different, obviously. These start out as buds on drooping necks, but the stems become erect as the flower opens.
I'm collecting the seeds, but they appear to grow spontaneously in our garden beds. I don't care to grow them en masse, but it would be nice to have in the apocalypse pharmacy.

No no no.... I used the bowl to collect them in . After being cut , a good bit of O drains out of the stem. I used the bowl to collect and bring home. I let the sap collect over the season.
Mind you , I had a Magnum Opus of a garden that year.

Depends on where you live. I live on the Gulf Coast area and Winters are mild. Perfect for a Winter crop.
I wouldn't know how to do it up.North. what zone are you in?

I've seen a few P.rhoeas scattered around the garden and although I haven't planted any P.somniferum this year, It's nice to see some of the overwintered seeds germinate. I have three youngins this year.

hey fellas
just wanted to join in on the fun around here

these photos were dated 3rd June, central europe
they are peshawar whites which are nothing rare, and I have been selecting the best ten or so for a few years and resowing, this is the F4 gen
white seeds and pink latex on a good year, I let them go longer than if you would be scratching them, on this cultivar usually about 25 days after petal drop, whole pods are stronger and overall yield is far greater this way IME and science backs that up so it's what I do. Obviously that info only pertains to edible grade or chemical extractions though
Happy to see there is still some folks around who mess with them anyway, it's an ancient plant that needs to be preserved IMHO so the more people growing it the better
I am hoping to perhaps add some new genetics to the poppy garden this year, some of the Hogshire stuff, Jimi's Snowflakes and a couple of his others. I dunno if it's just hype with his name attached but we will find out I guess. If any of you guys have grown any of those lines then let me know what you thought please
all the best

good to know thank you. thats when i will sow the bulk of mine. got a shitload of seeds and im trying to spread them all over they go wild here along roads and powerlines its so fun to find them when foraging its exciting. winter has been non-existent over here for the last 5-10 years im gonna start seeding small areas from now until march and do see what they like i hear a lot of different things but nothing concrete from locals not many people grow them here.
a meter or two away from or closer to a building with wind protection and facing south will probably make the difference here for winter seeding

for sure man if your climate can support it, there are afghan old timers regularly running three crops a year
and of course I didn't mention that, as you probably already know, specific cultivar plays a large role too, my Pesh go bad at -5C every time but I reckon there are somewhat more cold tolerant varieties, I hear there are some that can go closer to -10C and survive
the Hungarians run a winter crop for industrial purposes so Hungarian seed stock or crosses would probably work better than this white I have. I have seen lots of photos from there with them growing hard with snow on the ground around them
whatever the variety, if you are growing them and then selecting the best to finish for seed, those selected from your winter planting are naturally going to be auto-selecting for cold tolerance to some degree, cause naturally you choose the ones that do well in that climate and appear strong visually
hope you have some luck with them man

Greetings. haven't been able to post much (at all) due to work and other things going on. Nef, how do you find the potency on them Peshawar? for me historically they were always a good cultivar but this season they were completely inert. I'm hoping that is due to record rainfall and not any kind of inbreeding depression or other genetic factor.

Poppies grow in Afghanistan very easily
That climate is very similar to places like MN, MI, etc. Hot summers, cool winters.
Although they usually thrive in hotter months

I get amazing crops of them. Usually plant 1000 sqr ft of more each year, right after April. Usually won't snow and I water 1 time a day and get massive pods. Wait for them to. Best part is it only takes a table spoon of seeds to replant my plot. Even then I still seed too thick. Tails from the high mountains. Gunna drop some pics this fall.
