I was walking my friend’s dog in an abandoned for the pandemic parking lot, and there were poppy plants growing all over the place like weeds. Some were even growing from cracks in the pavement. I guess they’re not as frail as I thought
Any idea what kind they are?

Thanks
Any theories how they got there? They seem pretty widespread around the parking lot. I doubt someone would attempt a guerrila grow since if it weren’t for the pandemic I’m sure they would be keeping up with landscaping. I need to look around other temporarily abandoned parking lots.

I don’t think there would be much if any growing in the wild around Maryland/DC. Possibly by animals like ants or birds that have gotten to some untreated seeds. Though since they are localised within that car park and no where else. My only logical guess would be that Someone has dropped seeds around there. Maybe there were some hiding in the last batch of mulch that they used on the garden beds?

Maybe there’s some wild plants in the area. It’s right next to a power line right of way where lots of wildflowers grow.
Maybe some bird stole a dudes bagel and got seeds all over the parking lot
Maybe I went to the past and planted them there, knowing i would find them there today

This has inspired me to do something that I actually planned on doing years ago
I'm going to order a pound of poppy seeds off eBay, and next season, I'm going to walk all around town, like in some of the alleys, railroad tracks, parks, etc, with a salt shaker full of seeds, and I'm going to spread them everywhere!!!
So, you can imagine, I wont be able to remember all the places that I put them, and those flower will go to seed, and come back the following season, producing even more poppies!
So, eventually, enough seasons of doing that, and if I keep covering more areas around the town with more seeds, My whole town will be full of wild poppies every year
Woah, Damn, I was picturing all that as I wrote it, and it looked quite Amazing

If you don't harvest them. If you do you may be asking for trouble. I'm gonna do it in more remote places.

Yeah, I'm going to do it all over, but especially remote places, then they would never be able to even think of eradicating them all after they got established.
The plan, is not to harvest all of them, and to leave a few to set seed in each locations, and in some locations, not harvest any at all.

The coloration on the one bloom is similar to what most of mine look like, white petals with purple spots/streaks....I think it was mentioned a few pages back in the thread that is a very common trait/colors for poppies and many different varieties can have that same coloration.
The crown on those pods look way different than the crown on my pods tho.
Cool random/urban find .
I've only spotted them in a few peoples yard/landscaping. I never really noticed them until I started to grow em' myself.

It’s just this one parking lot but they are all over. The only explanation is the mulch they put down last year had seeds mixed in.
