Glorious!
My tallest are around 4ft to 4.5ft with nice thick/fat stalks. That one cultivar that I'm not sure of only produces one bud/pod per plant.
The "Black Swan" that I grew last year all produced multiple pods last year, about 3 to 4 pods per plant....But for some reason the seed I'm using from those Black Swan plants I grew last year has produced plants that are kinda scrawny and sickly looking and only have one teeny tiny pod each, I'm not sure what's going on there.
On the topic of "dead-heading" for promoting more buds/pods, curious if any of ya'll have done this or know the general idea behind it?..I top and prune my cannabis and pepper plants but I'm not sure about how and when this is done with poppies? I'm assuming one just cuts the stalk several inches below the bud/pod? But when should it be done? Should it be done when the buds are still forming and haven't opened yet or after the flowers bloom? I'm assuming it should be done prior to the flower blooming? Since after the bud blooms and becomes pollinated I feel like the plant "shifts" into producing seed and won't focus on more buds at that point...?...If successful, will those multiple pods on the plant likely be smaller than the one pod the plant usually produces with out dead-heading?
About 4 or 5 of my plants have bloomed a bit earlier than others at different times over the past week or so, looks like the rest of the others should bloom around the same time within the next week...I hope so, I was hoping I'd get one big bloom all at once and be able to see those flowers swaying about in the wind lol. But it seems like some plants are maturing just a little quicker/slower than others.

The idea behind dead heading is to keep the plants from going to seed (which would prevent new flowers from forming). You want to cut the pods AFTER flowering, but as soon as possible. Obvs not if you want seeds tho.

So does dead-heading not produce new buds?...I thought that's what the point of it was, so that the plant pushes up multiple new stalks/buds..?...
And then wouldn't the new buds that form after dead heading also end up blooming and then forming seeds?
I assumed dead-heading is basically like topping a cannabis or pepper plant, it makes the plant branch out more...I assumed "dead-heading" would make a poppy plant push up a few new stalks that each form a bud/flower/pod?
I haven't actually read into it at all...I've just heard the term "dead-heading" before a few times over the years and figured it was similar to topping a plant and makes for multiple stalks/blooms.

Dead heading does produce more buds per plant.
I'm thinking about doing it to mine, since I grew so little.
Start this video at 6:38,and you'll see what happens when you dead head

Do poppies need a lot of sun, or will they do ok with not much sun at all? Also when in CA do poppies get harvested? I remember last year my farmers market was selling them around July I think.

I feel that they need a decent amount of direct sunlight in a day, I don't think they'd do all that well with not much sun. I'm not really sure what the "rule of thumb" is as far as sunlight requirements with poppies. And I've only grown them a few times myself.
My poppies are already blooming at the moment and I'm in northern-cali . Last year I sowed a bit later than this year and they were ready around mid June IIRC. I'd say they're ready anytime between April and July depending when/how early one sowed the seed and their climate.

...and I remember that pic you posted of those pods you got from the farmers market last year. They were some nice looking pods. Cool that you can find them at your local farmers market lol, that's the way it should be.

california is a massive state with many different climates and hardiness zones. that could be anywhere from february to august or even september depending on the location. I know people who grow fields of poppies in the high sierra.

Well, Well, my poppies are starting to bolt!
It's the ones that I started indoors early, and kept under 24/7 lighting too.
Seems that starting them indoors, and then transplanting them out, has caused them to start blooming over a month earlier than they normally would have
The ones that I started directly in the ground aren't half as big, and wont probably bolt until next month.

I'm also not just growing opium poppies either.
I have Iceland Poppies going, California Poppies, Orientalle Poppies, Flanders Poppies, and a few others.
I'm really excited to see the Iceland Poppies bloom!

I thought at the end of 2019, Im pretty sure most of us felt like maybe the 2020s would be something like the glory of the famous roaring 20's. WELL I DID at least.
But this quarantine has given me the opportunity to heavily experiment with P. Somniferum, they entered flower about 4/30 and since then i have given them 24 hrs LED lighting to encourage more heads in such a densely packed area (45 plants in a 1x4x1 planter) on windowsill
I posit that led lighting should jack up phyto/bio-alkaloid production as it seems to do with tomatoes and blueberries as an additional effect as well as late stage spectrum manipulation. I boost the 650nm RED for 12 hours during the nightime and a mixed R/B spectrum during the daylight hours
so far the plants are doing quite well, small flowers but i have counted 70+ budsites in total with more stacking on the nodes everyday, 4 flowers so far, but it is definitely flowering season!.
I followed the orthodox advice as far as watering them, tapering off as they reach pod stage but i havent stopped foliar misting them 3x daily, always microdosing them with a diluted guano + urea mixture every 2nd day.
this has allowed me to keep 45ct; 3-4 foot tall multi headed plants in a very compact area
