Safe disposal of growing media and petris
    #26505156 - 02/26/20 04:33 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Something I’ve been wondering for a while. Those whom have security concerns, how do you dispose of your grow evidence.

  • Petri dishes and agar

    Contaminated grains

    Substrate

    Ect.

I’m sure some of you just don’t care and toss it in your trash. But for those who
Do care what happens to you and your family. How do you dispose of everything?

I’ve considered just putting agar into a blender with a little water and running down the drain and washing petris and recycling. As for sub, i have a large garden in the back and really need to compost anyhow. But I also got a super snoopy old lady that has a second floor bedroom who creepily watches everything I do while I’m in my yard and her son is either a sheriff or works at the prison (uniforms similar)  I could compost the sub or also work into garden soil. But then I also got chance of mushrooms growing like crazy in the yard and compost. Which some already do but this I’m sure would be on a whole other level

I haven't tried this, but I'm sure if you just dump the agar in a pot with water it will dissolve, and then you can just flush it. If it doesn't dissolve fast enough, just boil the pot. The dishes you can throw out in a bag, or if you're really worried let them accumulate and then throw them out somewhere else.
[EDIT: If the petris are contaminated, don't do the above or you'll spread it everywhere. At least PC it first, or if you don't want to risk it just throw it out closed.]

Contaminated grains, you can sterilize and then throw out with your usual trash (at worst it will just look like spoiled food), or flush.

Substrate is more difficult. I have cats, so what I would do if I wanted to be stealthy is throw it out with the litter. No one is going to want to stick their nose in that bag. Otherwise, same as for the petri dishes, I guess. Dump it somewhere else.

Another one the thoughts I had was blend it with a little water and pour into garden beds.

I live in an apartment complex. Spent or contaminated bottle sub goes into the trash (there are a few containers for all tenants, so I have plausible deniability). I don't use traditional petris, I use no pour agar in small reusable glass jars. So that's not a problem.
