How does this BRF jar look? * 1
    #26501685 - 02/24/20 02:38 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys,

Quick couple of questions on some BRF jars of mine.

Here is a picture which shows a side view of a jar with an apparent line where mycelium bodies meet.  The entire jar is colonized except for these points on the cake, which all look similar to the pic, where the mycelium meets one another (this is a 4 inoculation point jar).

And here is a bottom shot of the same jar.  You can again clearly see that the mycelium has not yet joined up as one.

How long does it usually take for the mycelium to connect with one another?  I'm keeping an eye of them so I can accurately start my consolidation week countdown, but I also want to leave the jar as undisturbed as possible.

Lastly, I am noticing some water has appeared along the sides of the jars as the mycelium has really started to colonize.  You can see it somewhat in side pic shot of the jar above.  Is this normal?

Thanks for the help!

I think what you see on the sides is the heat produced by the mycellium itself but that is just a postulation based on my own current and first project.

I had one do that recently. It's tammed out with mold a week later. Hoping for the best for you.

Which part recently? The separation of mycelium or the water? The water has been there ever since the mycelium started to really colonize. Close to a week now.

Is this jar considered 100% colonized or does the mycelium have to "connect" so to speak? From everything I've been able to find, the water is most likely due to the heat produced during colonization?

Usually it will connect and overlap each other and then you will have an network and wouldn't be able to tell there where two sides that joined at all. I think it's called clamping but im not the expert on that. Anyway I willing to bet there is a contamination inside and that's what is preventing it from completely joining together. Leave it in the jar for a week, you will know if it is a contamination.

We'll find out. The mycelium has just reaching one another's edge as of a day ago. I'd say that's way too early to say whether it's a contam or just not enough time has passed yet to allow for the mycelium to connect. Never saw this topic covered in any PF Tek threads/vids though hence my OP. I'll update here next weekend.

I just spawned 2 jars of berries that did this and everything is going great with both of those shoeboxes. I also have a jar thats just about done and it has had the same water droplets. Very far from an expert but that mycelium looks really healthy!

Did your jars have the gaps in mycelium and eventually join together forming a single mycelium body so to speak?

I hope it is! Would be super bummed if I lost these jars lol. Feels like such a long wait so to come away with no fruits would suck.

Quick update from my OP.  The mycelium appears to slowly be merging together.  I went ahead and labeled the sides of the jar so I can better track the progress.  12 noon this Sunday will mark 3 weeks post inoculation.  Keeping my fingers crossed that the jar continues to progress healthily.  I have a few jars that are similar in progress to the jar pictured in this thread.  Hoping the mycelium merges sooner rather than later so I can begin the consolidation countdown and then put into fruiting conditions.  Not sure how you cultivation pros out there have the patience for this hobby lol.

Looking good.

Always starting new projects so we don't have time to hover over growing jars. Take up agar, you will see what I mean. I can spend hours doing transfers.

It typically takes 4 weeks to fully colonize so your jar progress is looking good.

And yes, u want the cake to look completely uniform. When consoldation is done (about 1 week after 100% colonization), u will know cause little tiny pins will start to form on the cake.

I plan on getting into agar as soon as this cake grow is complete.

Good to know. That's what I will keep an eye out for.

Update on the jar.  Now 22 days since inoculation.  Hard to say if any progress has been made since my last update.  My lighting equipment is set to arrive on Friday.  I think I will give this jar until March 15th and if the mycelium isn't uniform by then, I'll toss it assuming its because of contamination.

EDIT: fixing pics

It's hard I know, but you just have to wait. The cakes don't appear to be contaminated. Everything looks good.
Don't toss it unless it really changes color to grey, pink, green, yellow, or black. Wait.
Or, you can send them to me.

Ya.  It just seems really weird that the jar would colonize as quickly as it did up to this point and then seemingly take forever for the mycelium bodies to merge together. Most (if not all) of my jars have similar separation as this jar. Could it be genetics from the spore syringe I used? I didn't cut any steps in the sterilization process (PC, wet SAB, big ol' propane torch) so I will be surprised I suppose if it indeed is a contamination.  I guess I'll go listen to Tom Petty and continue waiting lol.
