Coir question
    #26500886 - 02/24/20 03:57 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Greetings comrades,  I bought these coir blocks in Aldi in the UK before I saw that they contain NPK fertilisers.

Has anyone had success using this as substrate for Cubensis grain spawn in a monotub?

Are the fertiliser levels any good for cubes?

Cubes don't need NPK fertilisers

Coir is mostly used to provide water for the shrooms. Shrooms != plants so they don't need fertiliser in the traditional (agricultural) sense - if anything, the wrong kind of fertiliser (or too much) may harm the growth.

Nutrients come from grains themselves so you should be fine.

That's a very small amount of NPK.  Should be fine

i once spawned brf cakes into coir which had NPK in it (no idea how much). There was a trich outbreak before the coir was even colonized. The problem might have been in my spawn tho since the cakes were knocked up by spores.

If you're going to use it, I would try flushing it, like people do during the last 7-10 days of growing indoor weed. You need some kind of drainage container with fairly small holes in the bottom. Several layers of newspaper cut to fit will allow water through. You will need to do this slowly. You can flush nearly all the nutrients out.

Flushing the plant in the last week does not remove nutrients from the soil, it lets the plants to use the excess nutrients.

it removes the nutrients from the coco fiber, and therefore the plant eats up the nutrients it stored in itself... therefore there will not be excess nutrients at the time of harvest (which would jeopardize the taste).
At least that's what i have been told...

It removes nutes from the soil (or coir or whatever) AND allows the plant to finish off properly which greatly improves the flavor

Flush it for 10 days and your medium is clean enough to re-use like new

Yes I am wrong, it DOES leech nutes from the soil, but in my experience the plant uses up most of the remaining nutrients in the soil and the leaves.
I have amazingly tasting buds just by simply giving water in the last 2 weeks and I don't flood them I just simply cut off nutrients.
