 It does though. I have never had any issues with tubs colonizing in fruiting conditions. I do it because I get noticeably faster pin sets, everyone has their own style though, to each their own.:hatsoff:

Because fruiting doesn't occur until vegetation has finished.
Vegetation constitutes the mycelium spreading as far as it can over a substrate with available nutrients.
Once all the available substrate is colonized, it is then queued to begin fruiting.

It doesn't have to colonize 'all' of it per se. Some may be being used by a different organism. Some may be non-nutritious, like a casing. Some may be inhospitable because of poor conditions. Those things, too, will initiate fruiting of the 'partially' colonized substrate.

uh how does the mycelium know that is has to colonize the entire substrate before fruiting? That doesnt make much sense to me that it wouldnt fruit unless it colonized the entire substrate

It has to do with mycelium creating its own micro climate. As it creates a growing environment and also creates its own micro climate  and fresh air allows the evaporation of the moisture off of the substrate which innduces pinning after its consumed the nutrients required for procreation. It also could be that they are a hell of a lot smarter then you assume the network is.

Lots of valuable information here, thank you!
I put it into fruiting and flipped the lid as suggested, and my tub is looking pretty happy now
I will be putting a plastic bag with holes over it like in bods shoebox tek if the fruits collide with my lid.

Unrelated to the my original question:

Is that nipple in the middle a pin starting to form?
